What's the vocabulary that people need to understand this news story in English? 你一直在看頭條新聞。 大家需要哪些詞彙來理解這個英語新聞報導? We have 'enshrines,' 'lament,' and 'follow its lead.' 我們要學習「載入憲法」、「哀悼」和「追隨其領導」。 This is News Review from BBC Learning English. Let's have a look at our first headline. 這是 BBC 學英文的新聞回顧節目。 讓我們來看看我們的第一個標題。 This is from France 24: France enshrines abortion as a constitutional right in historic vote. 這是來自《France 24》:法國在歷史性投票中將墮胎定為憲法權。 So France has put the right to have an abortion into its constitution. 因此法國將墮胎權寫入了憲法。 We're looking at the word 'enshrine.' I can see that enshrine has the word shrine in it. 我們正在看「供奉」這個詞。 我看到 enshrine 裡面有 shrine(神社)這個字。 Phil, can you tell us why that's important? Phil,你可以告訴我們為這麽這很重要嗎? OK. A shrine is a place of worship and it's an important part of the verb enshrine. 好的。 神社是禮拜場所,是動詞 enshrine 的重要組成部分。 Let's start by looking at it literally, and you can see that it has this prefix in which is about something, being inside something. 讓我們從字面上看它,你可以看到它有這個前綴詞,其中是關於某事,在某事內部。 So if something is enshrined, literally, it's put inside a shrine because people think it's very important or sacred. 因此,如果某樣東西被供奉,從字面上看,它被放在神社裡,因為人們認為它非常重要或神聖。 OK. So that's the literal meaning. 好的。 所以這就是字面意思。 It's about treating something as so important that you put it in a shrine, but we're not talking about religious things here. 這是關於將某些東西視為如此重要以至於將其放入神殿中,但我們在這裡談論的不是宗教事物。 So why is it being used in this story? 那麼為什麼在這個標題中使用它呢? OK. Well, this is a metaphorical use and it takes this idea that something is very important and that it needs to be protected legally. 好的。 嗯,這是一種隱喻用法,它的意思是某件事非常重要並且需要受到法律保護。 So in this case, France has enshrined the right to abortion in its constitution to protect it. 所以在這種情況下,法國將墮胎權寫入憲法來受到保護。 And we might talk about other countries enshrining the rights to free speech or enshrining the idea of freedom of religion in their laws, for example. 例如,我們可能會談論其他國家在其法律中規定言論自由權或宗教自由的概念。 OK, let's look at that again. 我們再來看一次。 Let's have our next headline. 下一個標題。 This is from the Catholic News Agency: French bishops lament country's enshrinement of abortion in constitution. 來自《天主教通訊社》:法國主教哀嘆該國將墮胎寫入憲法。 This is saying that bishops in France, that's senior people in the church, are opposed to the change in the constitution. 這就是說,法國的主教們,也就是教會的高層,反對修憲。 Now we're looking at the word lament. Phil, what does it mean? 現在我們來看「哀嘆」這個詞。 Phil,這是什麼意思? Ok. Here it's a verb. It can also be a noun. 在這事當作動詞。也可以是個名詞。 And the most important thing about its meaning is that it's an expression of sadness. 它的意思最重要的是它表達悲傷。 So as a verb, it means to express sadness. 作為動詞,它表達出悲傷。 So here, it means that French Bishops are expressing their sadness about the change. 所以在這裡,這意味著法國主教們正在表達他們對這項變化的悲傷。 Now, lament is a word that we do quite often see in news headlines. 現在,「哀嘆」是我們在新聞頭條中經常看到的一個詞。 Can you give us some other examples? 可以再給我們一些其他例子嗎? Well, as a noun, it can be a song or poem that expresses sadness. 嗯,作為一個名詞,它可以是一首表達悲傷的歌曲或詩歌。 You could have a lament for times past or a lament for lost youth. 你可能會感嘆逝去的時光,或是感嘆逝去的青春。 That's nostalgic about the past and sad about how things have changed. 這是對過去的懷念,對事物的變化感到悲傷。 Now, we don't really use it for everyday situations. 我們並不會實際用於日常情況。 So I'm not going to write a lament about how late my train was this morning. 所以我不會寫一篇關於今天早上我的火車晚點的感嘆。 Ok, let's look at that again. 好吧,讓我們再看一下。 Next headline, please. 下一個標題,謝謝。 This is from Euractiv: France hopes other EU countries follow its lead on abortion. 這篇來自《Euractiv》:法國希望其他歐盟國家在墮胎問題上效法其做法。 Now, this headline is referring to a French minister who has said that she hopes other EU countries will take similar measures when it comes to abortion. 現在,這個標題指的是一位法國部長,她表示希望其他歐盟國家在墮胎問題上採取類似的措施。 Now, we're going to look at the phrase 'follow its lead.' 現在,我們來看看「跟隨其領導」這句話。 Phil, this makes me think of a dog. You take a dog for a walk on a lead. Phil,這讓我想起了一隻狗。 你牽著狗去散步。 Is that relevant? 他們相關嗎? Well, kind of. You use a lead (that's a noun) to lead (that's a verb) a dog to where you want to go. 嗯,有點。 你用牽繩(這是名詞)引導(這是動詞)一隻狗到你想去的地方。 So lead can be a verb or a noun and it has this idea to take someone somewhere. 因此,lead 可以是動詞,也可以是名詞,它的意思是帶某人去某個地方。 So the verb lead is straightforward. It means to take or direct someone. 所以動詞 lead 很直接明瞭。 它的意思是接受或指導某人。 But here we've got a noun. What does it mean? 但這裡是當作名詞。 這是什麼意思? Ok. Well, in this case, it's a bit like direction. 好的。 嗯,在這種情況下,它有點像方向。 So we've got follow its lead or follow France's lead and it means to go in the same direction or to do something similar. 因此,我們必須跟隨其領導或跟隨法國的領導,這意味著朝著同一方向前進或做類似的事情。 That's a metaphorical use, but we can use it literally as well. 這是一個比喻用法,但我們也可以按字面意思使用它。 Can't we, Beth? 對吧,Beth? Yes. So for example, if I was teaching you a dance, I might say follow my lead and it means follow my direction. 是的。 舉例來說,如果我教你跳舞,我可能會說 follow my lead,意思是「跟著我做」。 OK, let's look at that again. 我們再來看一次。 We've had enshrines -- protect something in law. 我們學習了 enshrines——用法律保護某件事情。 Lament -- express sadness. Lament——表達悲傷。 And follow its lead -- go in the same direction. 還有 follow its lead——前往同個方向。 It's International Women's Day this week, click here for some programs. 本周是國際婦女節,請點擊此處查看一些節目。 And don't forget to click here to subscribe to our channel, so you never miss another video. 並且不要忘記點擊此處訂閱我們的頻道,這樣你就不會錯過任何其他影片。 Thanks for joining us. 感謝參與。 Bye. -Bye. 掰。- 掰。
