What's the vocabulary? 你一直在看頭條新聞,Beth,我們要學習的詞彙是什麼? We have 'repelled,' 'high stakes' and 'running rife.' 我們要學習「驅逐」、「高賭注」和「不受控制」。 This is News Review from BBC Learning English. 這是 BBC Learning English 的新聞回顧節目。 Let's look at our first headline. 讓我們來看看第一個標題。 This is from DW, that's Deutsche Welle. 這是 DW(德國之聲)的新聞標題。 Can invasive alien species be repelled? 外來入侵物種可以被擊退嗎? OK, let's start with 'alien'. 好吧,我們從「外來的」開始。 'Alien' means that these species come from a foreign country. 「外來的」意味著這些物種來自外國。 They are invasive and they spread quickly and they cause damage, but we are looking at 'repelled'. 它們具有入侵性,傳播迅速,造成破壞,但我們要學習的是「被驅逐」。 Now, this word, Beth, 'repelled', reminds me of the thing I use when I go to some countries on holiday. Beth,「repelled」這個字讓我想起我去一些國家度假時使用的東西。 Yes, now, that is useful to think about - it's insect repellent. 是的,聯想一下這個很有用——它可以驅蟲。 You spray it on you or put cream on and it keeps insects like mosquitoes away from you. 噴在身上或塗抹藥膏它還能讓蚊子等昆蟲遠離你。 Now we're looking at 'repelled' and the verb is 'repel'. 我們看的是 repelled,動詞是 repel 。 Yes. And 'to repel', the verb, means to force something away from you and the headline writer is asking whether these alien species can be forced away. 是的。 而動詞「驅逐」的意思是強迫某些東西離開你,寫這個標題的作者在問這些外來物種是否可以被驅逐。 Can they be repelled? 它們能被驅逐嗎? That's right. Now, things can also repel you. 沒錯,事物也會讓你感到厭惡。 They make you want to stay away from them and that includes people. 它們讓你想遠離它們,包括人。 If you find someone unpleasant then they can repel you. 如果你覺得某人不討人喜歡,那麼他就會排斥你。 I think Beth's saying that I repel her. 我覺得 Beth 是在說她排斥我。 OK, let's look at that again. 好吧,讓我們再看一遍。 Let's look at our next headline. 讓我們看看下一個標題。 This is from Japan Today. 這個來自《今日日本》。 World losing high-stakes fight against invasive species. 世界在與入侵物種的激烈鬥爭中敗下陣來。 So, this headline is saying that the world is losing its battle against invasive species and it describes the fight as high-stakes. 因此,這個標題表明世界正在輸掉與入侵物種的鬥爭,並將這場鬥爭描述為高風險。 High-stakes is an expression that comes from betting or gambling. 高風險是指來自博彩或賭博的說法。 And if something is high stakes, you could win a lot. 如果賭注很大,你可能會贏很多。 You could lose a lot. 也可能會損失慘重。 So, the risk is high. 所以風險很高。 Exactly. Now, high stakes is an adjective. 沒錯,「高風險」是一個形容詞。 It means there's a lot to lose or a serious risk if something isn't successful. 這意味著如果事情不成功,會有很大的損失或嚴重的風險。 So this headline is describing the fight against invasive species as high-stakes. 所以這個標題把與入侵物種的鬥爭描述為高風險。 Yes. And we know that these invasive species are not good for the planet and there is a lot at risk if we can't stop them. 是的。我們知道,這些入侵物種對地球不利,風險很大,如果我們不能阻止他們的話。 We use it in other situations as well. 我們還能在其他情況下使用它。 For example, in tests like IELTS. 例如,在雅思等考試中。 This is a high-stakes test because there's a lot to lose if you don't get the band that you need, you'll have to pay again. 這是一個高風險的測試,因為如果你沒有達到標準的分數,你會損失很多,你得再次付費考試。 Yes. Now, talking of risk, Beth, I was playing poker last night. It was a high-stakes game. 是的。 說到風險,Beth,我昨晚在玩撲克牌。 這是一場高風險的遊戲。 OK. How did you do? Did you win, lose? 好喔,你玩得怎麼樣?你贏了還是輸了? Well, I was wondering if you could lend me some money for lunch, just £5 maybe? 我在想,你能不能借我點錢吃午飯,也許只需 5 英鎊就好? Let's look at that again. 讓我們再看一遍。 Let's have our next headline, please. 下一個標題。 This is from MSN: Invasive alien species running rife around Earth at unprecedented rate. 這個來自 MSN:外來入侵物種在地球上氾濫成災以前所未有的速度增長。 So, we see that word 'alien' again that we've already looked at. 所以,我們又看到了已經看過的「外來的」。 The headline says that alien species are running rife. 標題說,外來物種氾濫成災。 'Running rife' is what we're going to learn about. 我們將學習「失控」。 Now, Beth, we all know 'run', but what's the connection here? Beth,我們都知道「奔跑」這個字,但這兩者之間有什麼關聯呢? Well, 'run rife' means that something is uncontrolled. 「失控」的意思是有些東西不受控制。 It does not literally mean running and this idea of speed is important. 它的字面意思並不是奔跑,而速度這一概念非常重要。 So, invasive species are spreading very quickly, in an uncontrolled way, almost like they're running. 入侵物種正在以不受控制的方式迅速蔓延,就像它們在奔跑一樣。 Yes, and we can use this to talk about people as well. 是的,我們也可以用它來談論人。 So, for example, criminals might run rife in a certain area. 例如,犯罪分子可能會在某個地區猖獗。 It means there's a lot of crime. It's spreading fast. Nobody can control it. 這意味著犯罪率很高,傳播速度很快,沒人能控制它。 Or children might run rife at a party. 或者,孩子們可能會在派對上瘋跑。 The kids are out of control! 孩子們失控了。 OK, let's look at that again. 好吧,讓我們再看一遍。 We've had repelled - forced away. 我們學習了「驅除」——被迫離開。 High-stakes - there's a lot at risk. 高風險——有很多風險。 And running rife - it's uncontrolled. 失控——無法控制的。 Now if you enjoyed this video, we think you'll love this box-set all about animals. 如果你喜歡這部影片,我們想你一定會喜歡這套關於動物的合輯。 Click here to watch. 點擊此處觀看。 Don't forget to click here to subscribe to our channel, so you never miss another video. 別忘了點這裡訂閱我們的頻道,這樣你就不會錯過任何影片了。 Thanks for joining us and goodbye. - Bye! 感謝你的加入,再見。- 再見!
