Monty,請停止。 Hi, guys, welcome back to English with Max. 大家好,歡迎回到 English with Max。 In this video, we're going to look at various questions that might be useful when you're talking with people in English, particularly native speakers. 在這部影片中,我們將看看幾個在用英文跟人(尤其是母語人士)交談時可能有用的問題。 These are mainly things that you can say if you have difficulties understanding or hearing the other person. 這些基本上是如果你不了解或沒聽清楚對方話語時可問的問題。 This video is aimed at intermediate students, but it might also be good for you if you have an advanced level, because I've often heard advanced students make mistakes with these sentences. 這部影片主要是針對中級學生,但如果你的程度為高階,可能也有幫助,因為我時常聽到高級學生在這些句子上犯錯。 If you think you might forget these questions, then I recommend that you get a notebook and write them down. 如果你認為你可能會忘記這些問題,我建議你拿本筆記本寫下來。 If you would like to watch this video with English subtitles, you just need to turn on the captions. 如果你想要搭配英文字幕觀看影片,只需要打開字幕。 Remember to subscribe and to hit the little bell if you want to be updated on new videos, and don't forget that you can also follow me on social media. 如果你想要獲得新影片的通知,記得要訂閱並開啟小鈴鐺,也別忘記可以在社交媒體上追蹤我。 I regularly upload short videos to Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. 我會定期在 Twitter、Instagram 和 Facebook 上張貼短影片。 The first question is something you can say if you didn't hear or understand what the person said. 第一個問題可以用在沒聽到或沒聽懂對方說話時。 It's, "Could you please repeat that?" 它是:Could you please repeat that?(可以請你重複一次嗎?) Or, "Could you repeat that, please?" 或者是:Could you repeat that, please?(可以請你再說一次嗎?) With this construction, you can either put the "please" after the "could you" or at the end of the sentence. 在這個句型中,你可以把 please 放在 could you 後或是在句尾。 You can also replace "could" with "can", so it would be, "Can you please repeat that?" 你也可以用 can 取代 could,所以會變成:Can you please repeat that?。 But "could" is just a little more polite. 只是 could 稍微有禮貌一些。 You can also use the construction, "Would you mind...?" 你也可以用 Would you mind...? 這個句型。 Then it would be, "Would you mind repeating that, please?" 那就會變成:Would you mind repeating that, please?(你介意重複一次嗎?) But I think it's just easier and shorter to say, "Could you please repeat that?" 但我覺得用 Could you please repeat that? 就是比較簡短。 Now, be careful with this. 這裡要小心。 You cannot say, "Could you please repeat?" 你不能說:Could you please repeat?。 That's incorrect. 那是不正確的。 You need to put something after the "repeat". 你必須要在 repeat 後放點什麼。 So, you have to say, "Could you please repeat that?" 所以你必須說:Could you please repeat that?(你可以重複那句話嗎?)。 Or, "Could you please repeat what you said?" 或是:Could you please repeat what you said?(你可以重複你剛剛說的嗎?)。 To make this question more polite, you can first say, "I'm sorry." 要讓這個問題更有禮貌,你可以先說:I'm sorry.。 Or just "Sorry." 或是單說 Sorry.。 Either one is fine. 哪一個都可以。 For example, "I'm sorry, could you please repeat that?" 舉例而言:I'm sorry, could you please repeat that?(抱歉,可以請你重複嗎?)。 And you can add "I'm sorry." or "Sorry." to any of the questions in this video. 你可以在這部影片中的任何問題裡加上 I'm sorry. 或 Sorry.。 In English, particularly in British English, we like to apologize a lot, so it's not strange to say "Sorry." quite often. 在英文當中(尤其是英式英文),我們很喜歡道歉,所以時常用 Sorry. 不奇怪。 Another thing you can say if you didn't hear or understand what the person said is, "Sorry, what was that?" 如果你沒有聽到或理解對方所說的話,可以問的另一個問題是:Sorry, what was that?(抱歉,你剛說什麼?)。 It's a little bit direct, so it's maybe not quite as polite, but if you say it with a pleasant or polite tone of voice, it's normally fine. 這有點直接,所以可能稍嫌失禮,但如果你用和氣或有禮的語氣,通常是沒關係的。 These next two sentences aren't actually questions, but if you say them, it's implied that you would like the person to repeat what they said. 接下來的兩個句子其實不是問題,但如果你說出口,就暗示對方你希望他重複剛剛說的內容。 These are, "I'm sorry, I didn't hear what you said." 這些句子是:I'm sorry, I didn't hear what you said.(抱歉,我沒聽到你剛剛說的。)。 And "I'm sorry, I didn't catch that." 以及:I'm sorry, I didn't catch that.(抱歉,我沒聽到。)。 Both of these mean the same thing. 這兩句話的意思是一樣的。 "I didn't catch that." is just more colloquial. I didn't catch that. 只是較口語的用法。 If the person is speaking too quickly for you, the question you should ask is, "Could you please speak more slowly?" 如果對方語速對你來說太快,你應該問的問題是:Could you please speak more slowly?(你可以講慢一點嗎?)。 Or, "Could you speak more slowly, please?" 或是:Could you speak more slowly, please?。 If you want to modify it, you can also say, "Could you please speak a bit more slowly?" 如果你想要修改,你也可以說:Could you please speak a bit more slowly?(你講話的速度可以慢一點嗎?)。 If somebody uses a word or an expression that you don't understand, you can say, "What does that mean?" 如果某人用了你不懂的單字或用語,你可以說:What does that mean?(那是什麼意思?)。 Or, "What does X mean?" 或是:What does X mean?(X 的意思是什麼?)。 For example, "What does spatula mean?" 舉例而言:What does spatula mean?(Spatula 的意思是什麼?)。 This is a spatula. 這就是 spatula(鏟子)。 Be careful, because lots of people get this wrong. 要小心,因為很多人會把這個搞錯。 You cannot say, "What means X?" or "What means spatula?" 你不能說 What means X? 或 hat means spatula?。 You have to say, "What does spatula mean?" 你必須說:What does spatula mean?。 Another useful question is, "What do you mean by X?" 另一個有用的問題是:What do you mean by X?(你說 X 是什麼意思?)。 We use this is when we understand a word or a phrase, but we still don't know exactly what the person means. 使用這個的時機是,我們了解一個字或片語,但還是不太確定對方的意思。 We use it especially if something has several meanings or if something might mean different things to different people. 如果某個字有多重意義或是對不同人可能代表不同事情時,更會使用。 For example, "What do you mean by 'she's rich'? Does she own 1 house or 10?" 例如:What do you mean by 'she's rich'? Does she own 1 house or 10?(你說「她很有錢」是什麼意思?她是有 1 棟房子還是 10 棟?)。 Or, "What do you mean by 'clean'? Do you mean it's like a hospital or do you mean he cleans his house once a week?" 或是:What do you mean by 'clean'? Do you mean it's like a hospital or do you mean he cleans his house once a week?(你說「乾淨」是什麼意思?像是醫院一樣乾淨還是他一週會打掃一次房子?)。 In French, it's a bit like saying, "Qu'est-ce que tu veux dire par là?" 在法文中,有點像是說:Qu'est-ce que tu veux dire par là?(你是什麼意思?)。 And in Spanish, it's something like, "Qué quieres decir con eso?" 而在西班牙文中,有點像是:Qué quieres decir con eso?(你是什麼意思?)。 If the person you're speaking to understands your native language, and you want to know the translation of a word or a phrase in English, 如果跟你對話的人懂你的母語,而你想要知道某字或片語在英文中的翻譯, you can say, "How do you say X in English?" 你可以說:How do you say X in English?(X 的英文要怎麼說?) Let's pretend you're a Spanish speaker. 我們假設你說西班牙文的人。 You could say, "How do you say 'caballo' in English?" 你可以說:How do you say "caballo" in English?(Caballo 的英文是什麼?)。 If you don't speak Spanish, "caballo" means "horse". 如果你不懂西班牙文,caballo 表示 horse(馬)。 And be careful here as well, because you cannot say, "How is X in English?" "How is 'caballo' in English?" 這裡也要小心,因為你不能說:How is X in English?、How is "caballo" in English?。 No. 不可以。 But you can say, "What is 'caballo' in English?" 但你可以說:What is "caballo" in English?(Caballo 英文翻譯是什麼?)。 That's fine, too. 那也可以。 Sometimes, you might want to know how to spell something in English. 有時候,你可能想知道怎麼用英文拼寫某個字。 Then you could say, "How do you spell that?" 那你就可以說:How do you spell that?(那怎麼拚?) Or, "Could you spell that for me, please?" 或者:Could you spell that for me, please?(可以請你幫我拼那個字嗎?) Or, "Could you please spell that?" 或者:Could you please spell that?(可以請你拼一下嗎?) And, if you're still confused, you can say, "Could you please write that down for me?" 如果你還是感到困惑,你可以說:Could you please write that down for me?(你可以幫我寫下來嗎?)。 You don't have to use the "down" here. 你這裡不需要用 down 這個字。 You can just say, "Could you please write that for me?" 你可以直接說:Could you please write that for me?(可以請你幫我寫一下嗎?)。 But it's more common to say, "Could you please write that down for me?" 但更普遍的說法是:Could you please write that down for me?。 I hope you found that useful. 我希望各位覺得內容有幫助。 If you have any questions, please write them in the comments section down below, and if you liked the video, please give it a thumbs-up. 如果各位有任何問題,請將問題寫在下方評論區,如果你喜歡影片,也請幫它點讚。 See you next time. 我們下次見。
