It's black and white, furry, and kind of looks like a teddy bear.

You're right, Squeaks, it's a panda.

Kids all over the world have heard of pandas, but have you ever seen one?

全世界的孩子都聽說過熊貓，但你親眼見過嗎？

If you're lucky, you may have seen one in a zoo.

如果你運氣好的話，可能曾經在動物園裡看過一隻。

But I'm pretty sure you've never come across one just walking around.

但我相信你大概沒有看過一隻四處散步的熊貓。

That's because pandas are very rare, and we can learn a lot from them about what all kinds of animals need to survive in the wild.

那是因為熊貓非常稀有，而我們可以從牠們身上學到很多所有種類在野外生存所需要的東西。

The animals you and I know as pandas are actually called giant pandas,

你我所知道的熊貓實際上被稱為大貓熊，

and they're bears, in the same family as brown and black bears.

牠們屬於熊科，跟棕熊、黑熊同科。

And pandas, like all animals, need certain things to live, like food, water, and a place to sleep and be safe.

而熊貓就跟所有動物，需要某些物質以生存，如食物、水，以及一個可以睡覺和保持安全的地方。

We call the place where an animal has all of these things that it needs to live its habitat.

我們把擁有一種動物需要所有物質的這些地方稱為棲息地。

The place where you live is your habitat.

你居住的地方就是你的棲息地。

But let's find out what a panda's habitat looks like.

但讓我們來看看熊貓的棲息地是怎麼樣的。

All pandas that live in the wild⏤that is, that aren't in zoos⏤can be found in the mountains of China.

所有生活在野外的熊貓（也就是不住動物園那些）都可以在中國山區被找到。

The weather there is cool and wet, and the forests in these mountains make up the pandas' habitat.

當地的氣候涼爽、潮濕，而這些山間樹林形成了熊貓的棲息地。

Pandas make their homes called dens in places like the stumps of old trees or inside big, hollow logs.

熊貓會在老樹的樹墩或大型空心圓木內築巢，也就是牠們的家園。

So, these mountain forests give pandas a place to sleep and be safe.

所以說，這些山間樹林給了熊貓可以睡眠以及維護安全的地方。

But a habitat also needs to provide food for the animals that live there.

但一個棲息地也需要為生活在那裡的動物提供食物。

And the panda's favorite food by far is a plant called bamboo.

熊貓比任何食物都更喜歡的就是一種稱為竹子的植物。

Pandas eat a lot of bamboo, and quickly.

熊貓會吃很多竹子，而且速度很快。

They have to eat a lot to get as big as they do, but the problem with a panda's diet is that they don't eat much else.

牠們必須吃很多才能達到如此大的體型，但是熊貓飲食習慣的缺點是，牠們幾乎不吃任何其它東西。

The fact is, they're very picky eaters.

事實上，牠們非常地挑食。

So, a panda's habitat has to have a lot of bamboo growing in it.

所以說，一隻熊貓的棲息地必須有很多竹子生長其中。

Luckily, the cool, wet forests of China are a great place for growing bamboo.

幸運的是，中國涼爽、溼潤的森林是種植竹林的絕佳場合。

All in all, these forests are the perfect habitat for pandas.

總而言之，這些森林是熊貓的完美棲息地。

But there is a problem.

但有一個問題。

The panda's habitat is getting smaller.

熊貓的棲息地越變越小。

A long time ago, there used to be a lot of mountain forests for the bears to live in.

很久以前，曾經有很多供熊隻居住的山間樹林。

But people started to cut down a lot of the forests to make room for buildings and to use the wood for fuel.

但人們開始大量砍伐樹林以騰出建築空間，並用木頭當作燃料。

As they did this, the panda's habitat got smaller and separated into pieces.

而他們這麼做的同時，熊貓的棲息地變得更小且分割成好幾塊。

Pandas started to have problems finding enough food to eat and safe places to have their babies.

熊貓開始難以找到足夠可以食用的食物以及可以安全繁衍後代的地方。

And as their habitat got smaller, so did the number of pandas.

隨著牠們棲息地縮小，熊貓的數量也變少了。

So, today, there are far fewer pandas than there were a long time ago.

所以說，今天的熊貓數量遠比很久以前要少得多。

Scientists think that there are fewer than 2,000 pandas living in the wild today.

科學家們認為，今日生活在野外的熊貓數量不到 2 千隻。

But there is good news.

但有一個好消息。

Once people learned that pandas were in trouble, they started to do things to help them.

人們了解到熊貓有困難後，他們就開始做一些幫助牠們的是情。

People aren't allowed to cut down trees in the panda's habitat anymore,

人們不再被允許在熊貓的棲息地砍伐樹木，

and scientists and volunteers have planted bamboo and trees to try and make the pandas' habitat bigger again.

而科學家們和志工們也種植了竹子和樹木，試圖使熊貓的棲息地再次擴大。

It's hard work, but lots of people are trying to solve the problem.

這是一項艱苦的工作，但很多人都在努力解決這個問題。

So, pandas are already famous for being cute and cuddly,

熊貓已經以可愛和令人想擁抱而聞名，

but they're also a great example of how all animals need a healthy habitat in order to survive, and how sometimes, we can help protect it for them.

但牠們也是一個很好的例子，說明所有動物都需要一個健康的棲息地才能生存，而人類有時候可以替牠們捍衛棲息地。
