  • I want to start the

  • sir conversation by mentioning that larry and I were

  • word were here well only in London at the very same assumption

  • in four years ago now when we were here students as many of you are here today

  • and and the way that began as I received a letter in the mail

  • you know inviting me answer no you know just come join us monday and there's

  • going to be mikhail gorbachev was gonna be there

  • I know shimon peres Madonna the as long lost over

  • the celebrity names and the first thing I thought was

  • we really need to do something about junk mail on this country and I was

  • about to

  • and I was about to start a new line of products

  • coming out of Google to deal with that issue am

  • but somebody kindly decided to actually do

  • you note actually check tackle South before a disposed in so quickly

  • and in fact it turned out to be real and

  • and we came to London and had a great time at many people many of whom are

  • back here

  • today for this weekend and I'm having great time seeing again

  • on and whose

  • it was very inspiring the earlier many people there who had accomplished

  • incredible amount

  • and their lifetime and it was hard to imagine how

  • we could contribute in the same I'm more we've tried to do our best

  • most importantly though I was impressed by the plates

  • because when you are you are honored by the Academy receive

  • really nice played and I'm and I thought those with no

  • really well my dining room up primary colors and so we spent the past four

  • years trying to build something successful enough

  • but we can earn these plates to

  • am

  • and now that I i think we've done we haven't gone them and hand yet but I

  • think we're more or less done

  • am so I'm planning to go back and finish my degree now

  • my PhD my host mom leave of absence and

  • as my mother keeps reminding me I

  • there's one minor thing I realized before

  • I go back and I it's been my experience

  • now from being at a company that has

  • that has grown as viewed differently in the world and was when we were smaller

  • company

  • from people don't really like the company's

  • and I pondered how do you

  • address that issue because you know you wanna be disliked and

  • I think the real issue

  • is not is it unfair that people

  • kinda expect so much big companies and wash them so closely and so for the

  • questioners

  • what does the company really doing with all this last resource nurse

  • from to make the world better to actually do positive things in the world

  • and I think than people won't be focused on

  • you know digging deep into particular well what are the results for this

  • particular query

  • in our case for example people Maceo the search

  • you know result we don't like result number three in the search in back and

  • get a lot of attention

  • from I think that

  • a company like Google with you know

  • okay resources

  • financially not that bad compared to many other companies but nice

  • technical resources water distribution love users things like that I think we

  • have the potential

  • to make a very big difference is very big positive difference since

  • in the world and I think we also have an obligation

  • as consequence for them one thing we started last summer

  • about a year ago was the Google Grants Program

  • which is news advertising credit on our network to

  • to nonprofits and that's now grown close to 300 charities

  • now that we're supporting and the it doesn't love good things I just I get

  • notes

  • the other day we learned that there was a new school for young

  • young young schoolgirls that was being built in Indonesia for

  • underprivileged girls and thousands a consequence so far

  • my nice man in Singapore who'd seen an advertisement based on a Google search

  • you're done

  • and now Hughes sponsoring the school arm

  • we also applied to issues love

  • world poverty health arm

  • and inclusiveness and politics

  • all kinds a very broad range of charities that are currently covered by

  • Google Grants

  • and be we decided to take this to the next level

  • and that's going to be the Google foundation which were in the process of

  • forming

  • and there were gonna be able to point resources beyond just advertising credit

  • into at an actual financial resources and

  • also arm the skill and

  • the the technology that we have in our company

  • I'm it has also been received very warmly by our employees

  • because they feel like they can be a part of something that's bigger thats

  • not just designed to help Google but really is designed to help the whole

  • world

  • are so that's been a great experience really and now I'll give you a Merry

  • stake on it

  • it's an enormous pleasure for me to be her as well

  • and stocks so many bright people again I still prefer actually taking out with

  • students are

  • home once again I'm mad at Stanford

  • we both thought we were quite obnoxious and maybe that's still true

  • we don't notice as much anymore around but

  • I just one into hopefully inspire amongst the students

  • I know I talked a lot of the last night's and our just said

  • you know and thinking about your research in Google really is interesting

  • because it's an example

  • your research we start a Google we had no idea weird

  • we started working a century in late 1995

  • are on the web recent I want to download

  • going somewhere answer it was interested in data mining and

  • are we had sent an ideal really what we're doing we're just talking on the

  • web was interesting and

  • was a good computer science topic and we could probably get a dissertation to do

  • something that might be propped Kong might be significant which had all sorts

  • of things

  • almost which failed an we came up with a better way of doing ranking which we

  • didn't think would apply to search long and eventually realize was released for

  • research

  • down I think monday take away from me in this is

  • you know you should pick areas you think are interesting that could be liable or

  • there's lot activity

  • house in Staten links cuz I knew no one else was really looking at the links on

  • the web

  • Michigan United probably do something with them and

  • brown I think that's true many users were people

  • people do interesting things house think it's really important

  • truss when we're when we're working on this we had

  • many people answer and I and a couple other people who were tremendously

  • worked tremendously hard and I think thousand important part

  • var making all this work and a conversation last night was someone who

  • will remain nameless

  • but this on I'm thinking about doing this research in the area

  • and the workers can incremental on the papers are kinda boring but

  • you know I'm told a nice publish a lot of papers and our way

  • you know got my degree in our graduates I'm thinking maybe I should do this but

  • there's something I really wanted you

  • the knowns working on the right things much more important and

  • my advice would be no picture thing that's important you know maybe it

  • doesn't work out because it's more risky

  • but you can you know you your PHD might take a few years and you can try a

  • number of different all those things

  • and maybe one of them were can be a really big deal so

  • there's so much potential

  • you know you're in the room no just I had my advice would be to work

  • really hard on the things that you think will really matter in the world and

  • don't be afraid to fail

  • thank you

  • insults like we have about a minute for questions

  • or American tap dance which do you prefer

  • I'm just kinda curious

  • you guys are specially for in your life you

  • made gin or miss announced money

  • what do you have planned ending if you like be pretty

  • so much already why I'm still waiting for the plate

  • machines okay what do you do after Sunday

  • hound I think

  • you know there are many important things to life you know aside from

  • financial more career success can in fact

  • it's not necessarily the ultimate success that motivates you its processes

  • getting there &

  • the technologies for products that you build and whatever rooms

  • you may be in some I'm not too concerned about finding something to do

  • am though I do think Ill be based on doing things that I really enjoy

  • and not have some and goal in mind

  • I'm just really care

  • just carry as many as a hundred yes I'm from Harvard Medical School his was

  • wondering

  • had to come up with a name cool something in Google

  • is a large number its one followed by 100 zeros for a certain extra money no

  • spelled

  • slightly differently and I was before we had spell checking in those kinda things

  • an urban riots following so as the rails

  • thank you thank you

I want to start the
