  • and over in youtube how exciting and today you're  getting just a little sample of what it sounds

  • like it feels like to start to get better at fast  group native conversation guys you know there are

  • no rules here in these conversations right we talk  over each other we interrupt we go in we go wow

  • well how does it feel when we have this kind  of conversation i know i'm a big interrupter

  • natural right so natural very nice so natural and  we want to give our listeners that experience of

  • what real english is truly like in the everyday  world so guys to get more of this i want to let

  • you know you can go over to all this english dot  com forward slash fast to join our weekly quiz

  • program but today guys we're getting into the  topic of snow sports so i'll just throw it out

  • there what are your favorite snow sports do you  guys or do you just like stay inside and stay warm

  • under a blanket and just read or just listen to  music or do you go out there and attack the winter

  • or something i love snow sports i'm obsessed which  is funny because i'm in arizona where there's no

  • snow but i love skiing i love snowboarding  i love sledding i love all of the snowboards

  • i want to try snowshoeing and cross-country  skiing and some of the ones i haven't done but

  • i think it's so fun to get bundled up and go out  well you grew up in idaho right you grew up in

  • a snowy climate right aubry so yeah that was your  childhood going out that might be why i have such

  • fun memories because all my experience with snow  was as a kid and as an adult i haven't had to

  • deal with it really much sure that makes total  sense what about you guys michelle and jessica

  • are you outdoorsy types or do you  like the snow going out in the winter

  • it sounds like michelle you look skeptical well  i mean just ice skating count like yeah okay i'll

  • take a little skate around you know okay ryan  park or something like that or like not or uh

  • uh the rockefeller center like oh like like that  stuff i like i'll be honest um you know i i like

  • to go out with my son now and like watch him but  like whenever it is and not as fun as you guys

  • getting them all bundled up and then they're over  it two minutes later and they spend all this time

  • over two minutes later like in my experience kids  could spend all day and yeah they don't need a

  • board or don't get cold or something like just  like bundle them up and you like you could just

  • make up games for hours first of all like snowball  fights are super fun like you choose bases and you

  • you know there's like boundaries and like it's so  fun and then um making um igloos if there's enough

  • snow and if not the making snowmen is really fun  yeah like there's so much fun stuff in the snow

  • i i get annoyed when i have to walk my dogs in the  snow because that's just like hard but if i leave

  • them home and james and i just go play then it's  fun and it's free because how expensive are snow

  • sports now right lindsay we've talked about oh  yeah we can talk about this forever but i just

  • want to make one point before that i think what  i love about outdoor snow sports is it helps me

  • enjoy being inside so when i'm outside half the  day i enjoy coming back inside but if i'm inside

  • all the day i go nuts i get cabin feverdon't want to spend the whole day inside

  • so it lets me balance things out and i can do  both and feel good about it but yeah i feel like

  • i get enough of that like if i have to go to the  store like i don't like feel like i need to like

  • i don't need to like do a whole sport like i can  just like be like okay like i'm outside that was

  • and now i'm enjoying being inside no i mean the  thing is the thing is with skiing for example i

  • do a lot of skiing uh well i live in colorado so  everyone does here right it's just what you do

  • but skiing has become insanely expensive these  days a ticket a one-day ticket at one of the

  • big famous resorts is about 225 a day that is  bananas i'm getting silent plus all the deer

  • the gear is so expensive too it's bananas  have all the snow clothes and the snowboard

  • and the skins or whatever it's so expensive so  much right so it's like become elitist where a

  • very small percentage of the population skis now  and i think it's really sad because when i was a

  • kid we used to spend 12 bucks to go skiing for an  afternoon in new hampshire 12 did you guys ski as

  • kids jessica i think you maybe have been skiing  a couple times yeah i grew up next to lake tahoe

  • yeah carson city nevada like tahoe is so famous  yeah yeah i mean there's so many famous resorts

  • around there so yeah same thing like everybody  grows up skiing we our parents all drop us off

  • at the community center saturday mornings or  whatever and then we all take the ski bus up

  • for the ski program then you have like lessons  in the morning and then they set loose all these

  • crazy middle schoolers or however old you are  right in the afternoon um and yeah i mean it's

  • everybody grows up like that and then as  you get older you just you get a pass when

  • you're in high school you know and we're on the  mountain all the time so i grew up skiing and

  • then i changed to snowboarding yeah yeah yeah yeah  yeah for sure i mean and it was pretty affordable

  • right not being so crazy expensive like 20 bucks  or whatever for like a lift ticket i don't know

  • what happened i don't know when this changed  when it became so elitist but for me skiing

  • was a way to spend time with my family it was  technically it was our religion because instead

  • of my parents they had a choice do we do sunday  school on sundays and separate as a family right

  • the kids go there the adults go there or do we go  to ski yeah literally in ski lessons that was the

  • choice we made as a family and so we spent our  sundays together so what happens when that goes

  • away like those family outdoor experiences become  too expensive that's my question for you guys

  • and it's just not fair that it's not available  to everyone it shouldn't only be available to the

  • upper class the extremely rich right notknow as far as i know there aren't really

  • there aren't really cheaper lifting because like  affordable coupon days there should be not really

  • those are sort of gone away right like i remember  growing up the different resorts would have like

  • you know half price tuesdays or you know whatever  things were cheaper or something yeah i don't know

  • actually yeah i shouldn't say that because there  are some resorts that have that around here that's

  • the closest one it's small they have a night  skiing which is like cheaper and super fun yeah

  • um like it doesn't exist you can you can so that's  a whole issue we could solve for another day right

  • how can this industry turn around or doesn't  want to turn around and address the mainstream

  • america because most millennials are not are not  skiing like they're not really learning to ski

  • um but have you guys ever been injured really  badly out there in a a snow sport out of the world

  • yeah what happened i was skiing and i tried to  stop and sort of over corrected my turn so i was

  • facing facing up the hill going down backwards and  it was a very steep like black diamond hill and i

  • couldn't get myself turned to stop and i ran into  a snow making machine like a big metal machine

  • that makes the snow oh my god like worst case  scenario going very fast are you serious i like

  • woke up in a pool of blood on the mountain it was  just very bright against the white snow that's not

  • funny oh my god i got a cut like right here and  they had to take me down in the toboggan oh yeah

  • kind of a little snow yeah and they stitched me up  at the bottom of the hill but the doctor said it

  • was like a millimeter from like brain damage your  brain you know some real close calls it was a very

  • close call and just that i wasn't injured more  severely if i had hit a tree people died hitting a

  • tree oh yeah it could have been so much worse you  could die hitting a flipping snow machine too yeah

  • that's insane was it padded usually those things  are padded but you're hitting it hard anyway so

  • it doesn't mean it's any less of an impact but  was it do you remember what they're looking at

  • vitamins evidently kind of metal or something  enough that i got cut but it was a small minor

  • cut just like that that's terrifying could have  been so much worse it probably was padded because

  • you can't have sharp metal right there no you  can't you can't that's terrifying did you get

  • back on this well obviously not that day but did  you go back the next year did you stop skiing

  • yeah i didn't stop i didn't stop but i was morestopped skiing i started snowboarding after that

  • because snowboarding is easier to just like  sit or like make yourself crash and stop

  • right and when i was like i don't know if  i can do this anymore because i felt so

  • out of control when i was going fast down  the hill and was trying to make my butt

  • and i just couldn't there's nothing i could do  whereas snowboarding you can make yourself stop

  • okay so okay so that's my question so like for  since i'm not quite into the snow sports like i

  • um what for a snow sport newbie person  who's who doesn't like going too fast

  • um and doesn't want to be out of control that much  uh what would you recommend i think snowshoeing

  • i would recommend for you or cross-country skiing  because you know snow showing is hiking basically

  • it's just like you have a way you don't post  hole like you don't go deep into the snow so

  • you stay above the snow okay you don't have to go  up hills on the snow shoes but it's not dangerous

  • in the same way yeah okay i like a good safe  activity yeah i wouldn't go snowboarding or

  • skiing they both are dangerous they really are  wrecked um snowboarding and got a bad concussion

  • it could yeah be so hard when you can hit  your head yeah dangerous and i also hit a

  • tree on skis when i was in middle school yeahskied right into one and bounced off the other

  • it's like i don't know where are you in german uh  i was a little bit you know i laid down and i was

  • you know kind of a little disoriented i mean  there may have been brain damage we don't know

  • so yeah it is dangerous and it's you know i wasn't  paying attention i was just skiing and watching

  • someone else and all of a sudden my skis were  veering into the woods oh my gosh yeah this kind

  • of thing okay last last question what do you guys  think about sledding that is a snow sport that we

  • haven't talked about yet and and like it's so fun  and it can be free yeah sleds are cheap there's

  • all these snow parks around mount hood i'm looking  out the window you guys can see where i'm pointing

  • but like there's all these snow parks around  here and yeah it's like it's free you buy a sled

  • or i take an inner tube like i use the same thing  on the river and the mountain and it's so fun do

  • you guys go sledding that can be really dangerous  too my brother broke his arms because we would

  • pull sleds behind a tractor or a four-wheeler and  probably go way faster than we should have like

  • just going down a slope safe pretty safe that's  good don't don't go behind motorized vehicles

  • that's not wise ill-advised oh i won't we always  did i think that's a great alternative to spending

  • all that money on a ski ticket you could take your  family out right bring hot chocolate make it a day

  • or it could just be a couple of hours skiing ishuge commitment like the whole day you're up there

  • right oh yeah yeah snowing uh sledding could  be a couple hours i think it's great why not

  • yeah it is um it's you can feel the difference  uh if you're a an adult and not a kid

  • going off jumps getting any air and then  landing your spine is like your neck

  • like you're so sore the next day seriously you  are you're like sore from sledding it's ridiculous

  • yeah kids have no fear right because they don't  know what it feels like to get injured so they

  • don't know james's third trip skiing he'd only he  like learned got a couple lessons his third trip

  • skiing this kid was flying off jumps like spread  eagle in the air just like zero fear of anything

  • awesome of course it's amazing awesome i love  it guys this has been a great topic that i think

  • a lot of our listeners will be able to relate  to so guys again if you want to get this true
