Welcome to Taiwan's Rainbow Village.

歡迎來到台灣的彩虹眷村。

These paintings were all done by one man.

這些彩繪全都是一個人畫的。

Locals call him the "Rainbow Grandpa."

當地人們稱他為「彩虹爺爺」。

(Cantonese) Who is the Rainbow Grandpa?

(中文) 彩虹爺爺是哪個爺爺呀？

(Cantonese) It's me, Huang Yung-fu.

(粵語) 黃永阜，就是我。

(Cantonese) I am 97 years old.

(粵語) 我今年 97 歲。

Eight years ago, Huang's village was slated for demolition.

八年前，黃爺爺的眷村原本預計要被拆除。

To save it, he decided to paint murals on the remaining houses.

為了保住它，他決定在剩餘的房子上畫壁畫。

(Cantonese) Everything was originally white and yellow.

(粵語) 原本的建築都是白色和黃色。

(Cantonese) It was so freaking ugly.

(粵語) 難看死了。

(Cantonese) I usually paint at night.

(粵語) 我通常都在晚上作畫。

(Cantonese) There are too many people during the day.

(粵語) 白天的時候太多人了。

His village used to have more than 1,000 homes.

他的眷村曾有超過一千戶人家。

It started out as a settlement for Nationalist soldiers and their families, who fled mainland China to Taiwan after they lost to the Communists in the Chinese Civil War.

它起初是為國民黨軍人及其家屬所建的定居地，他們在國共內戰中敗給共產黨後，逃離中國來到台灣。

But gradually, all the veterans moved away.

但漸漸地，所有退伍軍人都搬走了。

Today, there are only 11 houses left, and Huang is the last man standing.

現在，全村只剩下 11 棟房子，而黃爺爺是最後一位住戶。

(Cantonese) I've enjoyed painting since I was young.

(粵語) 自從我年輕時，我就喜歡畫畫。

(Cantonese) I started in school when I was 6 or 7 years old.

(粵語) 六、七歲時，我開始上學。

(Cantonese) Later, I joined the military in Hainan.

(粵語) 後來，我在海南島當兵。

(Cantonese) I was 17, not even 18 yet.

(粵語) 當時我 17 歲，還未滿 18 歲。

(Cantonese) I learned how to fly planes, military planes.

(粵語) 我學習開飛機，軍用飛機。

(Cantonese) We fought against the Japanese.

(粵語) 我們和日本人打仗。

(Cantonese) Later, we fought against the Communists.

(粵語) 之後，我們和共產黨打仗。

Unlike many of his compatriots, who chose to leave the village for better housing, Huang decided to stay.

與許多同胞不一樣的是，他們選擇離開眷村去住更好的房子，而黃爺爺決定留下來。

His murals have given the village new life as a tourist attraction and Instagram hotspot.

他的壁畫賦予了這個眷村新的生命，讓它成為旅遊景點和 Instagram 熱門打卡景點。

Every morning, he still gets up early to paint whatever he feels like.

每天早上，他仍會早起去畫他想畫的東西。

(Cantonese) I like painting celebrities, singers, athletes, volleyball players, basketball players.

(粵語) 我喜歡畫名人、歌星、運動員、排球球員、籃球球員。

(Cantonese) I only paint people I like.

(粵語) 我只畫我喜歡的人。

(Cantonese) If I don't like them, I don't paint them.

(粵語) 如果我不喜歡他們，我就不會畫。

(Cantonese) Who's your favorite celebrity?

(粵語) 誰是你最喜歡的明星？

(Cantonese) Pai Bing-bing.

(粵語) 白冰冰。

But many of his murals also depict childhood memories, from before the war.

但他的許多壁畫也描繪了戰前的童年回憶。

(Cantonese) I also like painting animals.

(粵語) 我也喜歡畫動物。

(Cantonese) Dogs, cats, and birds.

(粵語) 狗、貓、鳥。

(Cantonese) My favorite color is red.

(粵語) 我最喜歡的顏色是紅色。

(Cantonese) It's pretty and eye-catching.

(粵語) 很漂亮且吸睛。

(Cantonese) I also like dots.

(粵語) 我也喜歡點點。

(Cantonese) No one else does it.

(粵語) 沒有人這樣畫。

(Cantonese) I'm happy.

(粵語) 我很快樂。

(Cantonese) Because this is my creation, and everyone comes to see it.

(粵語) 因為這是我的創作，然後大家都會來欣賞。

(Cantonese) And they all know me as Huang Yung-fu, the Rainbow Grandpa.

(粵語) 而且很多人都知道我是黃永阜—彩虹爺爺。

Wasn't that guy cute?

他是不是很可愛呢？

I've actually been to a lot of these villages in Taiwan where people paint the walls and go there to take selfies.

事實上，我曾去過很多這種台灣的眷村，居民會在牆上塗鴉，吸引很多遊客自拍。
