They wanted to thank the Native Americans who taught them how to grow food by asking them to join in the meal. A yearly day of Thanksgiving was held during early US history. In 18 63 President Abraham Lincoln made Thanksgiving a national holiday. Today, many families prepare a big meal with turkey as the main dish. Those who aren't cooking are watching parades and football games on television. Others perform volunteer service by feeding the hungry.
