How do you become a hospice nurse? Hi, I'm Sandy Sunter. I'm with the Hospice of the
Florida Sun Coast. Being a hospice nurse is probably one of the finest jobs that a nurse
might be able to do. However, in each and every state, and for each and every hospice
there are going to be different types of requirements for someone to do hospice nursing. Each individual
hospice program, according to their policies and procedures are going to require different
types of education, experience, and background to do hospice nursing for their individual
program. Some programs require that a nurse has not only their program through an accredited
school, but also, that they have several years of training on a med/surg. floor. Some of
the schools are now taking graduates of nursing programs and doing on-site trainings. It is
again, very different across the country and with many different hospice programs. It's
a wonderful opportunity for people who are interested in true hands-on nursing, where
you get to work with patients and families face-to-face, hands on care. And for people
who are interested in doing hospice nursing I suggest contacting the individual nursing
hospice programs in your community; finding out what their requirements are. Check with
the nursing programs in your community, and see if they offer palliative care, or end
of life care courses in their nursing programs, and see what the requirements are. Again,
hospice nursing is probably one of the finest types of nursing you could ever do. I'm Sandy
Sunter. I'm with The Hospice of the Florida Sun Coast.
