  • Hey Ambitious professionals! It's Linda Raynier of lindaraynier.com guiding you

  • to a career in life you'll truly enjoy and in today's video I'm going to teach

  • you four key strategies on how to really succeed in a senior level interview so

  • when I say senior I mean anything that is manager and beyond

  • and as a career strategist I've been able to guide many professionals into

  • positions that have long-term growth potential and so if you're interested in

  • working with me one on one I can give you details about that at the end of

  • this video strategy number one is to start your answers by giving the lay of

  • the land when it comes to senior level interviews they're not looking for just

  • your basic technical skill sets as they would be in lower level positions you

  • have Excel fantastic but that's not what they care about

  • that's only one component of the overall answer what they're really looking for

  • is that you have the ability to describe your situation when you first arrived

  • when you first showed up be able to tell them how it was what it looks like how

  • inefficient things were how unproductive things were and give them a real clear

  • scene of the situation so you want to make sure that when you're describing

  • the scene that it's kind of the dark gloomy a situation that your first

  • describing so that they fully understand the before so that eventually they can

  • understand the after which I like to call the happily ever after ending take

  • them through your thought process your perspective and then take them to the

  • happily ever after ending strategy number two is learn to share your

  • philosophy now this strategy plays off of strategy

  • number one but it's really important which is why I'm mentioning it in more

  • detail when it comes to senior level interviews they really want to

  • understand how you as the leader of the organization was able to impact change

  • in your department or your company and the way to be able to do that is it goes

  • beyond just describing what steps you took anyone can take certain steps

  • anyone can come up with a plan and do this this and this but to add the real

  • color to it you have to bring in your philosophy on what made you come up with

  • those steps your beliefs your thought processes your feelings about it and

  • when you can start to incorporate that into your discussion with the

  • interviewer it's going to allow them to truly understand you your character and

  • you can play a role in their organization so it's gonna allow them to

  • really be able to picture you in the company especially if they agree with

  • your approach and they agree with your philosophy so for example let's say that

  • in the interview they ask you a question like how would you handle a team of

  • difficult employees the typical answer a lot of people give is they just dive

  • right into the steps well I would do this I would do that and you know try to

  • go through the whole series of steps which is not the way you want to answer

  • it instead you want to start it off with a bit of your philosophy you could

  • probably say something along the lines of when it comes to managing others my

  • philosophy is based on the idea that blank whatever insert your philosophy

  • insert your framework whatever it is that you believe when it comes to

  • managing difficult employees and then from there you can talk about the steps

  • you would implement doing this allows the interviewer to see the whole picture

  • it's not just one aspect series of steps or it's not just about the numbers and

  • metrics but it's about you as a leader and your ability to impact change

  • strategy number three is put the interviewer at ease when you meet

  • someone for the first time and you find that that person is easy to talk to

  • they're personable they're comfortable around you and you feel comfortable

  • around them chances are you're gonna be able to remember that person much better

  • than just another stranger that you've met because you actually enjoyed being

  • in their company the same goes for interviews so one thing that you want to

  • remember is that you know showing enthusiasm in an interview is great

  • absolutely but if it's not authentic if it's not it coming from a warm

  • comforting place the interviewer is going to sense that off of you and so

  • one way to be able to do this is first you have to make yourself comfortable if

  • you want the interviewer to feel at ease you need to make yourself feel at ease

  • first so for example you when you walk into the room what you can do is when

  • you're stretching out your hand to shake there's you want to imagine yourself

  • internally radiating this warm positive energy to that person you're looking at

  • them in the you're radiating this loving warm energy

  • to them and even though it sounds funny it actually does work because they're

  • gonna feel that energy from you they're gonna feel that warmth from you and then

  • what happens is because you feel at ease they're gonna feel at ease and because

  • you've given them this comfort this warm energy they're gonna feel it too when

  • you sit down and you guys are chatting and you're talking through the interview

  • having the conversation discussing your achievements all of those things it's

  • hopefully going to lead in a much more positive direction than it would if you

  • were to show up feeling extra nervous very stiff uncomfortable and just simply

  • not yourself and finally strategy number four is showcase your research and

  • insights about the organization at this senior level when they're asking about

  • what do you know about us of course they're wanting you to be able to

  • demonstrate that you've done some research about the company and you give

  • them basic details but truthfully they actually want to hear more than just

  • that they want you to be able to demonstrate that you understand where

  • the company is at from a business operations perspective especially if the

  • role that you're interviewing for is in that line so whether it's finance

  • marketing operations even IT that means looking at press releases that means

  • reading their financial statements any reports that you can find news articles

  • really get yourself immersed into understanding what are the current

  • events within that organization what projects are they undergoing right now

  • and be able to demonstrate how you can contribute so for example if you've

  • discovered that the company has recently gone through a major acquisition and

  • they're probably still in the midst of integrating their acquire E into their

  • overall organization and you have had experience in that area well then of

  • course bring it up talk about how you've contributed in that in that area in the

  • past and how you can see yourself contributing to them and telling them a

  • little bit about what steps would need to be implemented at this point moving

  • forward or what suggestions you have you know being able to converse with them at

  • that level is really going to impress them especially because the interviewers

  • at this stage are likely the P who are leading the organization like

  • head honcho kind of thing and if that's the case you want to be able to do your

  • research and be able to showcase that in a positive way so there you have it my

  • four key strategies on how to succeed in senior level interviews if you're an

  • experienced level professional you've been trying to go for interviews you've
