Real English with Real Teachers.(頻道名稱) Hi guys. - Hello. - Lovely to be here. - So, we are lacking a member of the gang, aren't we? who also works with Harry 查理是跟哈利一起經營Real English with Real Teachers channel(頻道名稱)的夥伴。 on the Real English with Real Teachers channel. What's wrong with Charlie? so he can't join us today. He is bedridden. 嗯嗯,他不能離開床, - Bedridden, yes, he can't get out of bed. He's recovering in bed. And I saw a picture of his x-ray. Broken shoulder. - Yeah. - Not nice. 可以看到他的骨頭, - You can see it. It's coming out like this. - Yeah, it's rank. - It's not for the fainthearted. - No, not for the fainthearted. Nice expression. - Thank you. Okay, so you guys might have seen my video 是在介紹五個小撇步 about five tips to help you improve 來幫助你加強英語會話能力。 your conversation in English. If you haven't seen it already, 可以點上面這裡的連結, you can have a look up here 在那部影片裡,我提到, and in that video, I asked you guys 如果你們想了解感歎詞, if you wanted to see something about interjections. But really, to show interjections, 你會需要一個人陪你, you need a partner, someone else as well. So, I thought I've got Harry here, 現在一起開始吧。 let's do it together. - What is an interjection? 感歎詞就是一個字或一句話, - Well, an interjection is a word or phrase 話者用來表達感覺或情緒的詞句。 that a speaker can use to show feeling or emotion, so it's normally. - Ah, right. 在口說很常見,也可以用於寫作當中, - Yeah, it's normally used in spoken English, 在口說很常見,也可以用於寫作當中, it can be used in written English as well, 像是故事呀,如果作者想表達角色的心情的話。 like in stories if the author wants to show how a character is feeling. - Quite useful. We use that a lot in British English, don't we? - We use it a lot, we really do. And the thing is, if you want to improve your conversation, 你就絕對要知道怎麼用感歎詞, you really need to know how to use interjections 還要理解感嘆詞的意思。 and also understand them. - Absolutely, absolutely. - Yeah, 'cause they're different in different languages. So, today I've picked out my top ten interjections that native English speakers use and I want to help you understand them and hopefully, be able to use them. 好,現在開始吧~ So, let's get started. -耶嘿~ - Let's do it. - Yeah. 好的,我們要講的第一個感歎詞是—— Okay, so the first interjection 「Hmmm⋯⋯」 that we're going to talk about is hmmm. -「Hmmm⋯⋯」 -「Hmmm⋯⋯」 - Hmmm. - Hmmm. Now, what does hmmm, when would you use hmmm? hmmm⋯⋯應該是在想事情的時候吧。 - Hmmm, perhaps when you are going to think about something. - Yes, you would use hmmm to show that you are thinking about something. So, it could be great if you get asked a question and you want to buy a bit of extra time to think of an answer. -hmmm⋯⋯ -好噢。 - Hmmm. - Okay. And it's something that I mentioned in my previous video 「ehhh⋯⋯」 because a lot of speakers will say, ehhh, ehhh. - Yeah. 就像剛剛那樣, - Like that but we tend to say hmmm, 但我們習慣說「hmmm⋯⋯」,嘴型是閉上的。 with our mouth shut. And this is simply because having your mouth open in front of someone else is considered impolite in English. - Yeah, yeah, close the mouth. 尤其是在考IELTS(雅思)或Cambridge(劍橋)口試的時候。 Yeah, especially for students who are doing 尤其是在考IELTS(雅思)或Cambridge(劍橋)口試的時候。 like the IELTS and the Cambridge speaking exams. - Yes. 為了那個,露西剛剛說的, - To get that, yeah, like Lucy said, 為了爭取多點時間思考,用英式感歎詞, buying that extra time to think, 不要說「ehhh⋯⋯ehhh⋯⋯」, say a British sound, not ehhh, ehhh, ehhh, 說「hmmm,⋯⋯很有趣的問題,hmmm,⋯⋯」 say hmmm, that's an interesting question, hmmm. Hmmm,⋯⋯ - Hmmm, yeah, yeah and you just sound more native overall by not saying ehhh and you say hmmm. - Yeah. - It's very, very polite. - It's very polite, yeah, yeah. - Okay, the next one is jeez. 「Jeez」 - Okay. - Okay. -「Jeez」 -「Jeez」 And jeez, I mean, where do you think 我說,你覺得「jeez」是從哪來的? the word jeez comes from? - Hmmm, probably our friend Jesus. - It comes from the word Jesus 「jeez」是從「Jesus」來的, and it normally is used to expression shock 通常在受驚時, or exasperation. - Yeah., agreed. - So, I can say it in two different ways. If I was to say, jeez, what would I be showing? - Probably annoyance. Probably that someone did something you didn't like. 「Phew」 - The third interjection that we have chosen for you 「Phew」 is phew. - Phew. -「Phew」 Can often be teamed with the hand on the forehead. -「Phew」 - Yeah. - Phew. - We would use the phew interjection to show relief 好比我正在狂奔好趕上公車, that you are relieved about something. So, maybe I'm running for the bus Phew!」 and then I see that it hasn't arrived or maybe it's delayed, I would say, "Ah, phew." 我今天就說了, - Yeah, you know, yeah, so you're very relieved about it. I said it today actually. - Did you? - Yeah, yeah. 我還以為會錯過那班, - So, Lucy and I had real problems with the trains today 這樣的話我趕不上跟露西的約。 and I thought I was going to miss it 順利趕上火車以後,我就說了—— and I was going to be late for the lovely Lucy -「Phew」 -「Phew! Phew! Phew!」 and then I manged to catch the train 很好笑的是,我也差點趕不上火車, and I said. - Phew. - Phew, phew. 其實我們都延誤了, - But the funny thing was I was on a similar train 所以總而言之沒人遲到。 and I was also delayed. So, actually we were both delayed, 好的,來到第四個感歎詞是—— so there was no issue anyway. 「Oops」 - No, no. 「Oops」 - It was fine. -「Oops」 So, interjection number four 我想這個滿國際化的, is oops. Oops. -「Ups」 - Oops. -「Oops」 -「Oops」 - This one, I think, is quite international. - Yeah. 做事笨手笨腳的時候, - Spanish people tend to spell it ups, like. - And when would we use oops? - When you do something clumsy. -「Oops」 -「Oops」 When you do something by accident, 有時候我們也會說「oops-a-daisy」。 something you didn't want to do. 這是滿常見的英式用法, - Something not too serious. - Oops. - Oops. 「Oops-a-daisy」 - We can sometimes say oops-a-daisy 嗯嗯,我不能想像美國人說⋯⋯ and that's quite a common British, I would say, 「Oops-a-daisy」 if not English, 「Oops-a-daisy」 probably quite a British English expression. - Oops-a-daisy, yeah. 第五個是—— Do you know what? 「Ahem」 We will probably find someone in the comments -「Ahem」 -「Ahem」 that says no, I'm American and I use it all the time. 「Ahem」 So, yeah. - So tell us 這是你清了喉嚨, if you are American and you use that expression. Number five is ahem. - What does that mean? 所以我如果要討論你的⋯⋯ - Well, it's to show that you're clearing your throat 「Ahem!」 ready to say something, okay? Maybe you have to interrupt someone. So, you say ahem, 要演講的時候也常用「Ahem」。 I'm going to say something, 先敲幾下玻璃杯, let me interrupt you. 然後說「Ahem, - Okay, so if I was talking your. - Ahem. 第六個是—— I want to talk now. 「mmm」 (both laugh) 這裡有很多意思 - Nicely done. before they make a speech. 「Mmm.」 (Lucy dings) 就是我在講話, - They'll ding on a glass 哈利說『Mmm』來表示同意我的話。 and then go ahem. *agreeable另有討人喜歡的意思* I'm going to make a speech. and this has many meanings. We were just discussing that we use it a lot 「Mmm」 to show agreement, that we agree with someone. - Mmm. 「Mmm」 - So, yeah, I'll be talking and Harry will be mmm, agreeing along with me. 那你看到有人很吸引你的目光, - Mmm, it's because you're very agreeable, mmm. - Oh, thank you, Harry. Mmm,當然會! We would also use it if we see something delicious, 這有很多意思, we might say. - [Both] Mmm. - Yeah, with a different intonation, a bit longer. 也不想一直說「yes, yes, right,」 Yeah, it's got a wave to it. - Would you say it if you saw someone 對,可以在會議的時候用,像是工作會議 and you thought they were attractive? 「Mmm」 - Mmm, yeah I would. There are lots of different ways. Mmm/mm-mm I think it depends really Mmm/mm-mm on the body language with that one. 啊!我會說「mmm」。 - Yeah, absolutely, agreed. 如果我的學生說錯了, - But if you want to show that you're agreeing with someone, 或是他們⋯⋯ without interrupting them and saying yes, yes, 或是他們文法有錯, right, all the time, 我希望他們注意到錯誤, then just going mmm, mmm, 我就會「mmm」。 can show that you agree. 所以這是表達不確定, - Yeah, you could use that in a meeting, 或表達不同意某人 in like a business meeting, mmm. 說「mmm」的時候會是一種懷疑的語氣, - So, for the next one, 或是你剛剛說的另一種。 how would you show that you disagree? - Ah, mmm/mm-mm. - So. -「yikes」 -「yikes」 - Ah, I would go mmm. With my students, if they're saying something wrong. - Or if they. Or if I think, yeah, they've made a grammar mistake 「yikes」 and I want them to realise, 你舉的情境很符合說「yikes」 I say mmm. 你覺得某個東西有點噁心,也可以說「yikes」 - Mmm, okay, so we're showing a doubt, 接下來要介紹的非常非常非常英式用法, we're showing that we don't agree with someone 是我每天都在說的詞, if we go mmm, in like a sort of questioning tone. - Yes, or the one you said. 那就是——「so」 - The one I said which is mmm/mm-mm. 「so」是我用來開啟話題的⋯⋯ - The next interjection today is yikes. - Yikes. - Yikes. 我就會說:「so,下一個我們要說的⋯⋯」 - When would we say that? 說實話,太常說「so」不是很棒的示範, - We would say yikes to show negative shock 但「so」真的很好用, at something, normally negative. - So, when I saw Charlie's broken bone, 沒錯。 yikes, that looks painful, yeah. Yeah, so yikes. - That is a good example to say yikes. “so, yeah“ 真的。 Yeah, yeah, something you think, 噢!我做到了,“so yeah”! that's a bit disgusting, yikes. 這是拋磚引玉的一種方法, - Yikes, yikes. 或是可以承先啟後,進入下個話題, Now, the next one that we're going to talk about 又或是說話時增加一些間隔, is really, really British 說的沒錯,這一個真的很好用。 and it's something I say all the time, 下一個是「gosh」。 so much so that I actually have to cut it out -「gosh」 -「gosh」 of my videos quite a lot. 歐,gosh And it is so. 什麼時候用這個呢? So, so is a word that I use 我們很常說「oh my God」對吧, to introduce speech. 但有時候不要提到神比較好, So, I know I'm going to say something, 所以就用「gosh」來代替。 so I'll say so, next we're going to talk about, 「Oh my gosh」 and actually it's not best practise to say so that much 可以簡化成只有「gosh」 but it could be really useful for you 或是「my gosh」跟「oh gosh」 if you're doing a speaking exam 我猜是因為我們習慣小心點,別褻瀆了神祇, 'cause it does again, buy you a little bit of extra time. 對不對? - Yes, yes. 沒有錯,不能隨便用神的名字。 - So, what do you think? 所以大家都說「oh my gosh」。 - So, I think it's really good. 「oh my gosh] So, yeah, it's. 如果說了「oh my God」, Ah, I did it, so yeah. 奶奶聽到了就會說, It's a way of leading from one idea -「不准褻瀆神明!」 or one step in a conversation to the next 所以不要說神的壞話, or to create intervals between your diction 這些跟祂無關。 or the words that you say. 現在英國人對「oh my God」沒那麼不贊同了, - Exactly, so, I think it's a really good one to use. 但在美國或許還是如此, - Yeah, the next one today is gosh. 在這點上他們比較虔誠一點。 - Gosh. - Gosh. 好的各位,這些就是我們今天介紹的感歎詞, Oh gosh. 希望你們喜歡這支影片,也希望你們學到東西。 And when would we say this one? 記得去看看哈利的頻道, - Well, we would often say oh my God Real English with Real Teachers(頻道名稱) but sometimes it's good not to mention God 我們一起拍了幾支影片, and instead we substitute it with gosh, 其中一個是關於minimal parts的。 *minimal parts為兩個發音相似的單字,僅有一個pheme不同* oh my gosh, *白話:一組兩個單字,發音很像,只有一個音不同* p.s. 哈利下面會舉例 which can then be cut down to just gosh minimal pair非常重要, or my gosh or oh gosh. 尤其是想避免一些尷尬情況的時候。 - Yeah and I guess traditionally, 沒錯。 people were very careful not to be blasphemous, right? 舉例,一組兩個單字, - Exactly, not to use God's name in vain. 其中一個是很正常的單字,像是「beach(海灘)」, - Yeah, exactly, yeah, 另一個則是那個不好的字, so people would say oh my gosh. 那個單字可能會冒犯到別人。 - Oh my gosh. 對的。 - Because if they said oh my God, 別忘了在社交媒體上關注我, their grandmother would say. 我有臉書跟IG。 - Don't blaspheme, yeah. 下堂課再見。 - Yeah, don't speak bad about the God, it's not his problem. - Yeah, so oh my God isn't really frowned upon nowadays in Britain, it might be in America though. They're a little more religious over there. - Yeah. - Okay guys, that is it for our lesson on interjections. I hoped you liked it, I hope you learned something. Don't forget to check out Harry's channel, Real English with Real Teachers and we've done a couple of videos together. One's just gone live over there on minimal pairs. - Yes. - Yeah. So, minimal pairs are really important, especially if you want to avoid embarrassing situations. - Yes, absolutely. So, these two pairs of words that one word is a very nice word, like beach, the other word is not so nice and could offend someone. - Yes, don't forget to connect with me on all of my social media, I've got my Facebook and my Instagram and I will see you soon for another lesson. (kissing) (upbeat music)
