Good morning!
Nagashima - Day 2.
Today I woke up to this
beautiful morning in Kyushu!
Today we're visiting some of the local people
learning first-hand what it's like to live and work here in the town of Nagashima.
Which I'm especially happy about
because we might get to learn some of the local Japanese dialect here.
I mean, you guys know how much I like learning languages :P.
Check out this VIEW!
But, just a quick shout out
for all of my fellow language lovers out there
if you are looking for a native teacher of Japanese
it doesn't have to be a local dialect like this one
but if you're learning another language, check out the link beneath this video
there you can get a free custom lesson with the native teacher of your choice
and get started on that too.
But, before we get to all of that learning
it's best if we start out with a big, hearty breakfast!
Today's breakfast is traditional Japanese style!
Amazing!
I can't to try it...
Ohmygawddd.
I've never actually...
this is my first ever natto (fermented soy beans)!
I'll add some mustard, too.
Ok, mix it REALLLYYY good.
Here we go!!
It's even gooey-er and stickier than I thought!
Yeah, it just get's gooey-er.
Omg the smell @_@.
Actually, i hate slimey foods...
Oh well, too bad!
I'll try to make it like a sushi handroll...
Adding it on top!
I DON"T LIKE IT.
What the?!?
It's..b..bitter? Is that normal?
Well, actually it kind of tastes like beer.
It tastes like BEER?!
Yeah, like beer-ish... like the hoppy part?
That's the first time I've ever heard that.
Well, well well. That was interesting!
I'll just have to try it again another time!
That was great!
One thing I noticed about the food here
a lot of the soy-based products like soy sauce and miso
everything's a little sweeter here and i REALLY like that.
We're going to go meet some more people today...
To start things off we're heading down to the fishermen's wharf
because there's supposed to be an early morning auction.
So what we saw right now was an auction.
As they're going through the catch of the day
the auctioneer was saying which prices, for which fish...like INSTANTLY.
It's really fast, did you catch it?
They use a special lingo that only they know
to keep other's from understanding what they say.
So that they can't hear the prices, too.
Only the guys in the auction know what he's saying.
It's just our luck
we're trying to film a documentary
and Pokemon Go just released.
What kind of crazy pokemon might be out here?!
I want to catch them but I have to work!
Don't worry, I'll catch them all!
We saw how they sell this fish, now we'll see
how they take care of the fish (fish farming).
I'm waiting for that...
There's a pikachu!
Somewhere in the ocean!
An ocean pikachu!
Time to learn the local dialect!
Do you know what "UMAKA" means?
Like "umai"...delicious?
Yeah!
UMA..KA...
There's like an extra "M" in there.
You say like, UMAKA YO!
Meaning "this tastes really good!"
its for Kagoshima, Nagashima and Kumamoto...
In hiroshima they say "Jakke" (Casual for 'like')
Here we say "MAI"
DATTE (Tokyo), JAKKE (Hiroshima), MAI ...
MAI.
You guy's use a lot of "MA" sounds. :)
Like.. how do I explain this...
What's the word for "hot".
NUKKA NE!
I feel like I naturally understand that one.
NUKKA NE!
Then there's WAZZE
Oh yeah, WAZZE is another one.
It's like "very", like the 'very' in 'very happy' to intensify things.
WAZZE UMAKA
WAZZE UMAKA (It's sooooo delicious!)
WAZZE UMAKA.
You can say "TSUKARETA" for I'm tired, right?
Here it's "DARETA YO NE". (I'm tired, yeah?)
Yeah, we add "NE" (yeah?) a lot.
We add "yeah" a lot, yeah?
We add "yeah" a lot, yeah?
In this car...
there's a bulbasaur...
Walking down the street and BOOM. Starter pokemon!
AH! PIKACHU PIKACHU PIAKHRIEJWRIO!
No, I don't want bulbasaur!
Hold on, wait wait wait!
I waited and got pikachu as my starter pokemon!!!
Yep, haste is waste! Don't be hasty!
What is this lame "haste is waste" ?!
But, it's time to get back to work!
There's still 2 more things we need to see
in addition to its fish farms
Nagashima is also a producer of "DEKOPON"
which is a citrus fruit similar to an orange
that's known for the little bump on top.
The brand name for this in the agricultural collective is 'DEKOPON'
but the actual fruit and tree is called
"SHIRANUI" in Japanese.
See the "deko" or bump here?
That's where the name comes from.
Once it's ripe one of these fruits can sell for..
like 1 fruit can be $5 or more on it's own.
Uhh, these look so good!
I feel like they'd go really good in a Margarita.
Or.. maybe something more Japanese?
Like...Shochu. :)
Nagashima is also a producer of Honkaku Shochu
a single distilled traditional Japanese liquor.
There's a huge line up of different varieties
within this shochu that you can try
So everyone has a lot of fun picking their favorite.
They were all pretty easy to drink
and really fun to taste.
So where do you like to travel in Japan?
Tomorrow we're headed to a different island
but in the meantime, I'd love to hear where you think I should go next.
Let me know in a comment!
OK, so that's all for today!
I'll see in the next video!
