For more info and free training head to JOINTNI.COM As a career strategist I've had the honour of being able to help numerous professionals land their dream job offers and so if this is something that you're interested in working with me one on one I can give you details about that at the end of this video I get it you get cold for interviews you get super excited you go on to the interview and then you don't hear back or you're not sure what to expect next and it can be frustrating especially when you don't know if you've been selected for the next round and sometimes the one thing that you want to do is just simply send them an email and ask them so when will I be hearing from you next but here's the thing following up isn't necessarily going to change their decision you don't want to be a pest and follow up so instead I'm going to share with you my four guidelines when it comes to following up and what you should do after the interview guideline number one know that a follow-up email is actually unnecessary I don't know who made up the role or belief that you have to follow up after an interview as the job candidate because the truth is you don't recruiters hiring managers HR professionals they're not sitting around waiting for your thank-you email in fact if I was to be honest with you they could care less if they received a generic thank you follow-up email from you you could say nothing meaning don't send anything to them and they'll still feel the same way they did after they received a generic thank you message from you so if you do want to send a message to them then I'll talk about that in the next few steps but if not then all the more power to you my friend because like I said I think you follow-up email is unnecessary guideline number two know that you will eventually hear back from the recruiter or HR person regardless of whether you sent a thank-you note essentially you'll get your answer if an employer really liked you and wanted you to move forward they will either call you or they'll email you to let you know what the next steps are whether it's to move to the next round or whether it's that they're offering you the job and again the truth here is that if you had sent them a thank you generic thank-you note to follow-up that wouldn't have really changed their decision on whether they want to hire you or not because the way that they see you at that point is all based on how you performed in the interview not based on a little email that you had sent them after the interview so this guideline is to re-emphasize the idea that you shouldn't place so much importance on the thank you follow-up email because like I said if they like you you'll know fairly quickly what the next steps are in the process guideline number three when it comes to following up stop stressing about the thank-you note and focus more on doing well in the interviews so many people go on interviews and they leave the interviews completely wiping their memory of the questions that were asked the questions that they struggled with answering and not analyzing how they could have answered things differently and instead ask me so when should I follow up instead of worrying about when you should follow up you should probably better spend your time and energy on how you performed in the interview with respect to the questions that they asked you and where you could have improved where did you get stuck what questions did they ask you that stumped you how can you do better next time I think you're getting the drift here place less emphasis on following up and the thank-you note because really the hiring manager has already made their decision after they've met you from the interview they're not making their decision based on an email they received after the interview already happened nothing's going to change really at that point so with that you want a place less emphasis on the thank you follow-up note and more emphasis on how can you improve your interview skills for the next interview round in case you get called for that guideline number four if you do you send a thank-you note make it meaningful and impactful so now I know what you're thinking you're probably saying to yourself Linda seems to be really against thank you notes and follow-up notes it must be something that I really shouldn't do and that's not the case I don't mean it that way what I mean is don't send a generic thank-you note just don't if you're gonna send something make it meaningful and make it impactful and here's how instead of just saying I really enjoyed meeting with you I look forward to hearing next steps because that's just going to get you thrown into the trash bin I would suggest that you instead reiterate what you both discuss in the interview talk about the specific skills or experiences that you bring to the organization that you know you'll be able to contribute to the role and the position and from there talk about how excited you are to be able to contribute your skills and experiences to the projects assignments and to the team make your email specific and targeted it should be highly customized to the employer and when they read it they should be able to say that's right he or she does have the qualifications that I'm looking for I personally believe that with everything in life if you're going to do it you have to do it with a sense of purpose you have to know why you're doing the thing that you're doing if you're just going to send a junky random generic thank-you email better to probably not send it at all and spend your time and energy doing something else that's more productive so there you have it those are my four guidelines on how to follow up after an interview now if you're someone
