Now, a cover letter should be an A4 piece of paper or a document. 一封求職信應該是 A4 大小的紙張或一份檔案。 To start, you will need to include your name, your contact details, the date, and the recruiter's contact details as well. 開頭你要附上你的名字、聯絡方式、日期和招聘者的聯絡方式。 Even if you are emailing a cover letter, it needs to be written as a formal business letter. 即便你是要寄一封求職信,你也要寫的跟正式的商業書信一樣。 Always send it as a PDF file, as you don't know whether the recruiter will be using Windows or Mac, and a PDF will open on both and the formatting will stay the same. 一定要以 PDF 的檔案寄出,因為你不確定招聘者會用 Windows 還是 Mac 的系統, 而 PDF 在兩種都打得開, 且格式不會跑掉。 It should be no longer than one A4 page. 信件不可長於一張 A4。 And I advise a maximum of four paragraphs. 我建議最多四個段落。 Start with your name, address, and contact details in the top right hand corner. 在右上方的角落處的開頭為你的姓名、地址和連絡方式。 Make sure your details are sensible. 確保你的資料是很合適的。 Email addresses like crazybabe393@zmail.com won't make you look very professional. 類似像 [email protected] 這種 Email 會讓你看起來很不專業。 Underneath on the left, you should write the company address and the date. 左下方你應該寫上公司地址和日期。 Now let's talk about appropriate greetings for your cover letter. 現在我們來聊聊對你的求職信適當的招呼語。 When you're doing your initial research, try to find the name of the hiring manager or whoever will be reading your letter. 當你剛開始在做搜尋時,試著找出聘僱經理的姓名或 任何負責閱讀你的信件的人。 This way, you can make your letter a lot more personal and it will prove that you're a determined candidate who wants this job specifically. 這樣一來,你就能讓你的信更有切身感,這也會證明你是個意志堅定的應徵者, 而且特別渴望得到這份工作。 If you aren't sure of gender, just write their full name. 若你不確定性別,直接寫上他們的全名。 Make sure you check your spelling, because misspelling their name will cause them to disregard your application 99% of the time. 確保你的拼字無誤,因為若你拼錯了名字會讓他們 有 99% 的可能無視你的求職。 If you can't find their name or if you aren't sure about their name, you should instead start with, 若你找不到他們的姓名或你不確定他們的姓名,你的開頭應該寫: "Dear Sir or Madam," or, "Dear Hiring Manager," or, "Dear Recruiting Manager," or even, "Dear Human Resources Professional". 「親愛的先生/女士」或「親愛的聘僱經理」或 「親愛的招聘經理」甚至是 「親愛的人力資源專員」。 Just avoid, "To Whom It May Concern," as it's a little outdated. 請避免寫:「敬啟者」因為這有點過時。 Now let's talk about the first paragraph. 現在來談談第一段。 The first paragraph needs to include why you're writing the letter and the position that you're applying for. 第一段要包含你寫這封信的原因和你所要應徵的職位。 You should also mention where you found the position and the fact that your CV is attached. 你還應該要提到你在哪裡看到這個職位的,以及你將自己的履歷也附上了。 At the end, you can add a little extra about yourself that you couldn't share on your CV. 最後,你可以補充一些在履歷上沒辦法寫出的關於自己的事情。 For example, I am writing to apply for the role of account manager, in response to the advert posted on the Seed Jobs platform. 例如,我是針對求職平台上張貼的公告來寫此信應徵客戶經理的職位。 Please find my CV attached alongside this cover letter. 在這封求職信中的附件為我的履歷表。 Having worked in the agricultural industry for five years, I'm very excited about the prospect of working with a company that has such a strong focus on sustainable food. 在建築產業中任職五年後,我很期待能與一間在致力於永續飲食上 有前景的公司任職。 Let's discuss the second paragraph. 接著來談談第二段。 Now that you've introduced yourself and established your enthusiasm, 你已經介紹過自己了並建立起你的熱忱, in the second paragraph, you can discuss your most relevant experience and talk about the specific qualifications and skills that make you the perfect candidate. 第二段你可以討論 最相關的經歷, 並談談是什麼特定的條件與技巧讓你成為完美的應徵者。 In this paragraph, you need to sell yourself, something that we talk about in another lesson. 在這段你必須推銷你自己,這同時也是我們在另一堂課提到的。 Make sure you're not just repeating what you've put in your CV. 確保你不只是在重複你的履歷表中的內容。 You want to add something extra while still emphasising your skills and experience. 你要添加一些額外的東西,同時也能強調你的技巧與經驗。 Let's talk about your third paragraph. 再來談談你的第三段。 The main goal of your closing paragraph is to thank the employer for their time and consideration. 你的結尾段落的主要目的是感謝雇主所給予的時間與考慮。 You can also use this paragraph to justify any major gaps in your employment history, sum up your qualifications, and express an interest in continuing to the next stage in the hiring process. 你也可以利用這段來解釋你的職涯中任何重大的空窗期, 跟總結你的條件,以及表明對於接續應徵的下一階段的興趣。 You could also show your availability for a callback and an interview. 你也可以表現出你對於回電和面試是有時間的。 Before you sign off, you should try to promise more information. 在你署名前,你應該盡力承諾能提供更多資訊。 For example, I would love to show you my award winning design portfolio, or I would like the opportunity to show you how I increased the productivity by 23%. 例如:「我很樂意提供您我得獎的設計作品集」或 「我很希望能有機會向您展示出我是如何提升 23% 的生產率。」 Just be prepared to fulfill any promises in the interview. 總之要將你所承諾的在面試時做好準備。 Now, let's talk about an appropriate sign-off. 現在,我們來談談適當的署名。 You should end your message with a formal closing such as Sincerely, Regards, or Best regards. 你應該要信中附上正式的結語,例如 Sincerely、Regards 或 Best regards。 If your closing contains more than one word, capitalise only the first word, as in Best regards or Yours sincerely. 若你的結語不只有一個單字,第一個單字要大寫,像 Best regards 或 Yours sincerely。 Be sure to put a comma after your closing. 還要在你的結語後面加上逗號。 On the next line, you need to write your full name and then you need to write your telephone number and your email address on separate lines after your name. 下一行,你必須寫上你的全名,接著在你的全名後寫上你的電話號碼, 而下一行則寫上電子信箱。 Although you will have already put your contact information at the top, it's important to remind them. 雖然你在頂部已寫上你的聯絡方式,再提醒他們也是很重要的。 Including it again makes life easier for the recruiter. 再寫一次會讓招聘者方便許多。 Now, we're going to be looking at cover letter grammar. 現在,我們要看看求職信的文法。 My first grammar tip is to avoid contractions where necessary. 我的第一個文法技巧是在必要時避免縮寫。 I'm or I am. I'm 或 I am、 Don't or do not. Don't 或 do not、 I'd or I would. I'd 或 I would。 So how do you know if it's okay to use contractions in a cover letter or not? 所以你該如何知道在求職信中是否能用縮寫呢? Well, it depends on who's likely to read it and the job that you're applying for. 這要看是誰會讀信,以及擬是應徵什麼樣的工作。 You want to demonstrate that you're a good fit, and a good way of doing that is to match the communication style of the employer in your cover letter. 你想呈現出你是個合適的人選,而好的呈現方法就是 在求職信忠符合雇主的溝通模式。 You should always use full sentences. 你應該要寫出完整句子。 Bullet points are for the CV. 項目列點適用於履歷表。 Full sentences are for the cover letter. 整句話適用於求職信。 You should avoid the passive voice and use the active voice most of the time. 你應該避免使用過去式,大多數時候用主動語態。 An example of the passive voice is, "A promotion to supervisor was awarded to me after only one year." 被動語態的範例有:「僅僅一年後我就被 升職為主管了。」 The active voice: "After only one month, I earned a promotion to manager." 主動語態:「一個月後,我就取得升職變成主管了。」 The passive voice: "Loyalty was recognised as one of my strengths." 被動語態:「忠誠被認為是我的強項之一。」 The active voice: "I am very loyal." 主動語態:「我很忠心。」 Now let's discuss the vocabulary that you should and should not use in your cover letter. 現在我們來談談你應該和不應該用在求職信中的單字。 Firstly, don't use any slang. 首先,別用俚語。 This is a formal business letter. 這是一封正式的商業書信。 You should also try to use key words from the job advert. 你也可以試著用招聘廣告中的關鍵字。 Additionally, you should use powerful verbs and adjectives. 此外,你應該用強而有力的動詞和形容詞。 I'm going to give you a list of weak verbs and the powerful verbs you could use instead. 我會給你一份強度弱和你應該使用的強而有力的動詞的清單。 Number one, instead of get, you can use receive. 第一,不要用 get 而是改用 receive。 Number two, instead of give, you could use provide. 第二,不要用 give 而是改用 provide。 Number three, instead of help, you could say assist. 第三,不要用 help 而是改用 assist。 Four, instead of answer, you could try reply. 第四,不要用 answer 而是改用 reply。 Number five, instead of choose, you could say select. 第五,不要用 choose 而是改用 select。 Number six, instead of saying talk about, you could use discuss. 第六,不要用 saying 或 talk about而是改用 discuss。 Number seven, instead of to make sure, you could say ensure. 第七,不要用 make sure而是改用 ensure。 And number eight, instead of to tell, you could use to inform. 還有第八,不要用 to tell而是改用 to inform。 Lastly, before you send off your cover letter, you need to check is everything attached? 最後,在你送出你的求職信前,你要檢查是否每樣東西都附上了?
