My name is Wendy Tien and I cover the Healthcare Sector, the healthcare

sector including medical devices, pharmaceuticals,

nutritional supplements, cosmetics and natural products.

Taiwan offers excellent opportunities for American

suppliers in the healthcare sector. Most high end

products are imported from the United States and the market

continues to grow. There are three factors forcing

the market, healthcare market to grow. First

it is a wealthy society. People are increasingly

able to afford medical service and high

quality imported products, leading to

increased healthcare spending. Secondly,

has to do with the use of nutritional supplements.

More than a quarter of the people in Taiwan

take daily vitamins and

nutritional supplements. Annual consumption of

nutritional supplements averages three billion dollars. The popularity

of natural chemical free organic items

continues to increase. Lastly, since

1993, Taiwan has increasingly become

an aging society. About

ten percent of the local population in Taiwan

is 65 years old or older.

And this percentage is expected to reach

14 percent by 2017. And many of these people

suffer from chronic disorders and they need

treatment. Demand for dental implements

and plastic surgeries is also very strong.

To connect U.S. suppliers and Taiwanese

importers, I am, I will be leading a delegation

to Natural West in

March in Anaheim, California. This is

an opportunity for U.S. companies to promote their product line

to interested buyers. Also, we

are organizing a U.S. pavilion during the Taiwan

Healtcare Trade Show in summer, which

will take place in Taipei. We encourage

American companies to participate in this show.
