  • war games is mentioned certainly in the Ready Player.

  • One book, but I don't know if it's in the film.

  • I haven't seen the film yet.

  • What, what was inside?

  • 80 80?

  • Why does it look remarkably like the front of an older?

  • Uh, because it was based on an out, maybe themes.

  • I e.

  • T A C was a machine that come out not long after the outer.

  • It's an S 100 bus based machines.

  • So s 100 means that it had a connector at a back plane, But there was 100 connections which carried the data bus address.

  • Busted all the control lines for the process.

  • Sir, The back lane didn't do anything.

  • It was just a bunch of connectors.

  • You'd have a CPU board, maybe a Rambo or maybe a cereal bored.

  • You could expand it so effectively, it was it was pretty much the same as the out air.

  • But it kind of looked nice with its nice big switches.

  • Little bit PDP a stole switches.

  • Must be ones there.

  • Any ideas that would light up on the front, so kind of a sexy looking out, they remind me of almost the front of a VCR.

  • Yeah, I can see some of them say address.

  • Some of them say data.

  • Some what some say in port.

  • I mean, how does it How would it work?

  • You literally toggle in binary data on the any days, would light up on the panel there with your bone around, put from it.

  • So if you want to write data to address zero FF, then you would convert that into binary.

  • You would total that finery in on you in the same way you would tumble in the data that goes there, and that's it.

  • So it's a very, very time consuming.

  • But actually I mean, everybody talks about that in the way the out areas down.

  • And that is a very, very slow and tedious process quite often what you would be doing.

  • It's just troubling a few lines of code.

  • Well, maybe just a jump.

  • Even that would jump to a bit of code.

  • That memory that would then initialize destroy evil tape or whatever.

  • So what they call boot loader code just to jump the machine into life and get talking to Sprinkles.

  • So you've got the address bus there.

  • You could set the address on.

  • Then you've got your data on you.

  • Control that in as well.

  • And that way you can basically like a poke command in basic.

  • You can put data into a certain memory location.

  • Yes, you can use them like that.

  • But ultimately these things, you could have a serial port.

  • If you had a serial port, you could hook up a terminal.

  • You might have a rum in there, which might be basically a low basic in for anything else.

  • Maybe C p m.

  • From a disc tape.

  • Whatever interfaces you had connected to it, you could get your data in and out.

  • So it's not like we all just sat there.

  • Total Indian code day after day in binary.

  • See, people did.

  • But, you know, these things were a bit more usable than that.

  • Remember when we looked in the old days, there were all sorts of upgrades and changes.

  • And would that be quite common on one of these as well that people just have their own different boards?

  • Yeah.

  • I mean, these machines were in for enthusiasts.

  • You know, the people that were buying these quite often work electrics.

  • He kind of people s Oh, Yeah, you were by one.

  • And you would just keep making it better.

  • And the same as everybody does with their PC.

  • More ram, More speed, more power.

  • It was exactly the same.

  • So yeah, the outside of the original round.

  • So that we have isn't really much of an outside left, you know, it was upgraded so much this on this bit different.

  • It's had a bigger back plane in it.

  • So it's gotta think of toys back plane there so you can plug in more boards and, you know, same thing would have been going on.

  • Let's upgrade it.

  • We need more room for our applications.

  • You're really into computers.

  • It looks to me like, kind of quite a professional machine.

  • So it's probably bending reality to have had the hacker kid with it sitting on his bookcase.

  • Yeah, these things weren't cheap.

  • S o.

  • You know, they were reasonably good money.

  • So whether Matthew Lightman his name, I think it's Broderick.

  • So enlightment like I remember.

  • Um, it was, uh um yeah would have afforded to have one of those machines in his bedroom.

  • I don't know, because it's the machine into just about picture that machine you got the terminal that went next to it.

  • You have these little speaker box so I could speak.

  • Andi is VHS player on the on the shelf there.

  • That's a fair old amount of money is worth of gear.

  • But maybe his parents were loaded.

  • I don't know, but they go on the I mean, were they bending it?

  • Be with things like the speaker.

  • You want to hear it or come in?

  • What sort of hardware would you have needed to have made a computer of that era talk?

  • I mean, they're waas basic space, and this is out there.

  • So it's it's feasible, states.

  • Maybe it spoke a bit better than the actual real speech synthesizers did at the time.

  • I mean, I can't remember when the SP 0256 K out, which is a chip which is a space in the chip you're linking those up too early is exciting ones and things.

  • But I mean, speech synthesis has been around sometimes, so it was kind of feasible.

  • Maybe normally we get the lid off.

  • We have a look around, but this particular one's being with.

  • Yes, this one is a bit of an empty shell a minute.

  • So we have one of our volunteers is currently taking the boards out on Dhe is getting work him.

  • So we've got there's a process of cardio Ram card.

  • Yes, 100 is pretty standard.

  • So he contested in other machines wth e out here.

  • He's already done.

  • So we now will very shortly have an out air where you can, where you could trouble in the date review one.

  • But we probably won't.

  • But we will be out to load in the little program to just fill up with timing loops.

  • And as those timing looks, play interferes with the radio.

  • The radio then creates tones and you got music on.

  • Apparently, there was this award given for the first thing.

  • They really made an out hairdo of any use.

  • If you call that of any use bags musics, of course.

  • So, yeah, it s so that would be working.

  • But also, the next thing is, get the inside workings.

  • Well, eh, So we're just getting the bulls, Deng.

  • Then we'll refurbish the machine itself.

  • Hopefully you didn't come here and have a play and we could take it to that gate because yellow key yellow castle and we could get in there.

  • Now we have what could possibly be a sword or maybe just a narrow.

  • So we can now take that one that we could come out.

  • Is it one thing at a time?

  • Yeah.

  • Yeah.

  • So you gotta have the right things at the right time so we can go this way all but we can't.
