Hey, it’s Marie Forleo and you are watching MarieTV, the place to be to create a business
and life you love. This is a very special day. Not only is it New Year’s, but it is
also the second anniversary of MarieTV.
You know, people always ask me all the time whether or not they should do video even though
they don’t have a big budget right now. They don’t have a fancy set or professional
editors or a wardrobe stylist.
And, you know what? If you’re thinking about doing video or you have any other endeavor
that you wanna get off the ground but you think it has to be high end out the gate,
you are gonna love this episode of MarieTV. I’m gonna take you back in time and show
you how we started, and I think you’re gonna be surprised. I’m even surprised to see
where we started and where we are now, and I think you’re gonna find this very encouraging.
“Hi there, it’s Marie here and I wanna share a story today that I learned from an
unusual source, from...”
I first started playing with online video back in early 2010. All I was doing was sitting
at my desk, looking into my little webcam on my Macbook, and shooting. As you can see,
there’s no fancy editing, no good lighting. It was kinda crappy. It was just me talking
to the people like you right out in the interwebs.
But here’s the thing, even though I was enjoying it, I knew that if I had people on
my team that actually knew what they were doing, we could make this thing so much more.
And I was really following a hunch, because I knew deep inside I was supposed to be doing
more video.
By late summer I had found two incredible women, Michelle and Grace, and they started
helping me make videos in my apartment. We had some better lighting, things were starting
to take shape, but, as you can see, it was still pretty raw and off the cuff.
Then I realized to deliver the most value to my audience, I needed to start outlining
my questions and answers to get my best thinking out of my head and down on paper.
We also wanted to up our lighting game, so we stopped shooting in my apartment and went
over to Michelle’s apartment and started shooting against the infamous brick wall.
So now things were really going well, but one of the most frustrating parts of MarieTV
for me was figuring out what the heck to wear. You see, I hate shopping. I especially hate
shopping alone because I get really overwhelmed and frustrated.
So that’s when Elsa came on board, style me Elsa, and she started making me look great
and took away that complete headache of wardrobe.
The other thing I realized is I could write a lot better and faster if I had someone to
write with. That’s when I brought my beloved friend and genius writer, Laura Belgray, on
to co write MarieTV.
So that brings us to 2012 and I was itching to switch things up, so we took our show out
on the road and we started interviewing some awesome people.
Now, once I got out from the brick wall I did not wanna go back. So our next step was
to go out and find some studios and create our own MarieTV set. Then we got even more
adventurous and we did our first ever MarieTV cooking episode with our dear friend, Kris
Carr.
And that brings us up to today, the very first day of 2013. So, as you can see, this whole
thing just started with me with my webcam, and we built it step by step by step over
time.
There is no such thing as an overnight success, so anything that you wanna do in life takes
a lot of hard work, a lot of persistence, and, yes, you will make a lot of mistakes.
So no matter what you wanna create, remember, the whole key is just to get started. You
don’t have to get it perfect, you just have to get going and you will figure it out along
the way.
You know, when we first started MarieTV, I had a vision for where it could go, what it
could become, and I am so grateful that we are on our way there. And I’m grateful to
you for helping us make this happen.
So now as we’re at the top of this new year, I would love to know more about your vision.
Because one of my favorite quotes in the world is about vision and it goes like this:
“Dissatisfaction and discouragement are not caused by the absence of things but the
absence of vision.”
So what’s your vision for the next year? What do you wanna create over the next 12
months? What are you excited to dig into, excited to experience, or excited to achieve?
And, most importantly, what’s one single action step you can take right now to help
make that vision come to life?
