Thank you for all the information and the inspiration. This week exactly a year ago, I started a vegetarian and organic catering service in the Netherlands." Check it out! "These are my three main activities; a veggie/organic meals on wheels by bike messenger four times a week, catering for smaller and larger groups on weekends, and food and cooking workshops occasionally. That's a lot of short-term planning, veggie harvesting, shopping and cooking to do. I'm caught up in what every daily demands and there's very little room left in my head to look ahead and see where I'm heading with this business. So I boldly went and hired a second cook for one or two days a week although I can't really afford it yet. I want to use those days to work on bigger projects for the future that I believe and hope will bring in more money. Plus these are things that I would really love to do but it's impossible to set up in the current cooking frenzy. I was wondering if you could tell me something about your experience with this." Does it pay to pay somebody? A: This is an awesome freakin question because it's something that every small business struggles with especially when you're first starting out. Right? Because you're doing everything yourself! So to answer your question, yes! It does pay to pay people but here's the thing. You have to design your business with the end in mind. What does that mean? Your business needs to give you freedom from two things, time and money. That means you can't do everything yourself otherwise you're going to burn out. Remember, as an entrepreneur you're building something that needs to go beyond your individual efforts. You want to build an entity that really lives and breathes on its own. First, you need to reengineer the way that you're thinking about your business. You want to start engineering it to work with less of your involvement, not more. When you design a business that only benefits you, you're going to wind up creating a job that owns you rather than a business that you own. So you want to design your business so it benefits everybody! That means you, your employees, your suppliers, your vendor; everybody that comes in contact with your business. So you want to design your business so people are rooting for you to win. How do you do that? First, you've got to be clear on your why. Which I talk about in this video that you should watch after this video. So your why is all about why you got into business in the first place. What's the bigger purpose? Who are you benefiting? How is it making a difference? Once you know your why, you also have to take responsibility for making sure that employees know why they'd want to work for you, right. You've got to get that message out there. One place to implement this immediately is you want to write an ad to attract people to your company. So I've gone ahead and taken the liberty to write an ad for you that not only stands out from all the other businesses in your area but it will help you attract the right kind of talent to your business.
