  • So I wanted to show you some deleted scenes that didn't make it to filming time from the

  • metachirality script, or idea-pile, because it kind of goes from an idea-pile to a story

  • that hopefully makes sense.

  • And anything not essential to that particular story is gonna get deleted.

  • So here's some examples of that.

  • Most of the time when people talk about symmetry they talk about discrete symmetries, like

  • this has symmetry when turned 72 degrees but not anywhere inbetween.

  • Unlike a circle which can turn an infinitely small amount and have symmetry.

  • But with continuous screw symmetry you can't just go any infinitely small amount around

  • and forward, it has to be in the right proportions.

  • So it kind of gets calculusy, like maybe you could describe the continuous symmetry using

  • the slope of the threads, or maybe use degrees of rotation per millimeter?

  • Things with continuous screw symmetry also, of course, have a discrete translation symmetry.

  • Move it forwards by the distance between threads and it looks the same.

  • And the foot thing has translation symmetry too, every five feet (or every 45 millimeters

  • if you want the metric conversion), and you wonder if you could avoid having that extra

  • symmetry and only have screw symmetry, but you'd have to not have the feet come back

  • around to the same spot, like, the angle between them can't add up to a multiple of 360 degrees

  • no matter how many times you add it together.

  • And you could do that by using an irrational angle so it never comes around to the same

  • spot, like a vine where the leaves grow at the golden angle around the stalk each time

  • and so it has golden angle screw symmetry only, no translation symmetry ever, which

  • means no leaves ever grow out of the same direction from the stalk and can get maximum

  • sunlight.

  • That's great because our foot tower deserves to grow and thrive in its natural state with

  • a plant-like symmetry that will allow it to flourish.

  • Anyway if you want to avoid extra symmetry, now you have to worry about symmetry the other

  • way, around a cross section.

  • Like this double helixy noodle has 2-way rotational symmetry, which you suppose is just part of

  • its double-helixy nature, while your other pasta has three way rotational symmetry on

  • a cross section so its a triplehelix.

  • And your drill bits seem to mostly have 2-way rotational symmetry so they're basically

  • just like rotini.

  • Speaking of 180 degree rotations, there is an exception to the metachirality of screw

  • symmetry, that's when it's a discrete screw turn of 180 degrees because then it's

  • the same to the right as to the left.

  • Or if you already have another symmetry on the cross section such as two-fold mirror

  • symmetry like in the kind of plants that grow opposite pairs of leaves and have a 90-degree

  • screw symmetry, well, now that 90-degree screw symmetry is the same both ways.

  • So whether an entire thing is metachiral depends on its whole group of symmetries, not just

  • each individual symmetry.

  • So screws and drill bits all have the same chirality because of convention, but what

  • about these things that have the opposite chirality though they're a little conical

  • but we'll ignore that for now, also some nice 5 and 6 fold rotational symmetry going

  • on, but these are called easy-outs and they go counterclockwise because they are for drilling

  • out bolts, like if the head of a bolt comes off and its stuck in something and you want

  • to get it out you can drill a hole in the bolt and then use one of these in there, and

  • it will grip and drill into the bolt while turning counterclockwise which will encourage

  • the bolt to turn counterclockwise and come out.

  • Also maybe something about the chirality of spiral staircases in castles and how to defend

  • your tower from invading swordsmen if you're left handed, and did you know very rarely

  • a person or animal will come out the opposite chirality, like their organs are the other

  • way round, and that's a different thing from right or left handedness?

  • So yeah those are my deleted scenes and there's some interesting stuff in there, I really

  • like the foot plant outside, but nothing in there is essential and my videos are art pieces,

  • it's not enough for something to be interesting, or funny, or cool, or educational.

  • It needs to be doing all of that, plus be essential to the storyline.

  • So most of my time is spent researching, writing, and editing the script.

  • And at the same time I'm doing that I'm planning and imagining what the visuals are going to

  • be.

  • And most of that stays in my head so I like to get to filming as soon as possible before

  • I forget the visuals I have in mind.

  • Filming usually only takes a day or two, but it's the most exciting part to watch so it's

  • a little overrepresented on my lens uploads.

  • So here are some of those that I managed to save from filming this video so you can see

  • what filming kinda looks like in real time rather than me narratizing after the fact

  • what I think filming is like.

  • Alright, it's 8am, I'm almost done setting up to film Metachirality Part 2, I just realized

  • I've got the wrong kind of pasta so, but I don't need that till the second half of the

  • video.

  • Well, the camera crashed mid-filming.

  • We're gonna hope it can recover the data.

  • So it looks like we didn't lose anythnig, though I'm gonna hunt around for another memory

  • card.

  • Not sure I have another memory card.

  • You will be seeing this one in the video.

  • I'm about a 5th of the way through the script, got a couple good hours of filming in, it's

  • time for second breakfast.

  • And your homework, if you want, is to fill out this diagram.

  • And there's our foot selfie.

  • I photoshopped the foot selfie to get me lots

  • of feet, just got a few more to cut out.

  • But first I'm gonna break for lunch.

  • *Noodles, noo-noodles, noo-noodles, noo-noodles*

  • Well I made a pile of feet, there's my pile of feet.

  • It's 8:30, I've almost finished setting up to film.

  • I've gathered my props, and I was gonna pre-drill the holes through the feet but now that I'm

  • looking at these drill bits I think I have to spend a little time re-writing, cuz these

  • have to be in the video.

  • Edited my script, I think the drill bits are gonna make better examples than the one I

  • had, so I'm happy about that.

  • I also had the idea to try welding rod instead of pipe cleaner.

  • It'll be stiffer but still has this nice texture so the feet will keep their angle.

  • But now it's time for 2nd breakfast!

  • I didn't have the right size drill bit because these ones keep breaking so I borrowed this

  • beautiful shiny set and I'm so jealous of it and I want one.

  • But yeah, that size worked perfectly.

  • I'm about two-thirds of the way through filming now.

  • I really like how my foot staircase came out.

  • And now it's time for lunch.

  • Guess what's for lunch.

  • *Noodles noo-noodles, noo-noodles, noo-noodles*

  • It's 5:40 and I just finished filming which is good cuz I have to leave in a minute.

  • I wasn't sure I was gonna get the rest of the filming done today but I'm glad I did

  • so I can edit tomorrow!

  • Ya I had to do things like make this pastakitty.

  • It was important.

  • So yea those are the filming-day lens clips, and Lens is a patron-only thing where I can

  • upload short clips, people can see what I'm working on and, yknow, where their money's

  • going.

  • And they disappear after 24 hours.

  • So it's very low-pressure, I can just share whatever.

  • After I film then I record my narration and I edit the footage to the narration.

  • And I don't use stop-motion, some people think I do.

  • I film it all in real time and I end up with many hours of footage.

  • For this video it's about 7 hours of footage.

  • And that's because I want to be able to get really granular about how I edit and what's

  • in real time and what's not.

  • Because I usually use a lot of temporal texture, where things being in real-time or sped-up

  • or how I make the transitions (or lack of transition), that's all part of the flow of

  • the scene.

  • And I'm very picky about that.

  • I'll also mention: I do a lot of reading out loud of my script while I'm writing, which

  • helps in editing and getting a feel for how it's flowing.

  • And that helps, come time to record the narration because I've already basically been practicing

  • for a week or more.

  • It's great to be both writing and acting the narration because I'm very picky about how

  • I want the words to be expressed and pronounced and the cadence of the narration.

  • So.

  • Unlike this video, which is rambled in real-time.

  • Ok that's it!

  • Bye!

So I wanted to show you some deleted scenes that didn't make it to filming time from the
