Ah, the drive-in. 2
A way to enjoy the big screen from 3
the comfort of your car. 4
Drive-ins were once all the rage 5
and now some theaters are seeing 6
patrons flock to them once again 7
during the coronavirus outbreak 8
for some social distancing approved fun. 9
When's the movie gonna start? 10
Well Bella, not until it gets dark out, 11
but I know you like the drive-in and I do too. 12
Yeah, I like it. 13
Roy Jackson has been going to The Admiral Twin 14
in Tulsa, Oklahoma for decades. 15
His eight year old daughter, Bella, 16
is a regular too. 17
A trip to the drive-in has taken on 18
new meaning for the family. 19
Drive in movies are America 20
and it gives families the sense of hope 21
and understanding that everything 22
is gonna be okay. 23
When you're within your own family vehicle, 24
that's safety, that's something that makes things normal 25
and you can control that, 26
your own environment, 27
to know that you're going to be safe 28
and that you're also gonna keep others safe, 29
especially in this time of social distancing. 30
Blake Smith owns 31
The Admiral Twin and The Starlite Drive-In 32
in Wichita, Kansas. 33
He's kept both open to give families 34
some fun during this tough time. 35
I'm looking at it in the sense of 36
it's really more of a community service in some ways 37
that people are gonna get cabin fever. 38
This is a safe way to be entertained 39
and just get out of the house 40
for just a little bit. 41
But owners are taking 42
extra precautions are taking people safe. 43
Blake closed his concession stands 44
and is asking people to bring their own snacks. 45
In St. Louis, Missouri, 46
the owner of the Starlite Drive-In 47
says he's spacing cars farther apart 48
and asking patrons to use the restroom 49
before they arrive. 50
Doug Mercille says he'll stay open 51
as long as he's allowed to. 52
Unless they just come to us 53
and tell us that we need to shut down, 54
we feel that we provide a safe environment. 55
That safe environment 56
and momentary escape from the news 57
is now more important than ever, Blake says. 58
I think it's a really important experience. 59
A good movie can take you away 60
from the stress for a couple of hours. 61
And how doesn't need that? 62
