字幕列表 影片播放 列印英文字幕 Hey! It's Marie from MarieTV business and life advice that works. And today we have a very special episode. We are in the West Village with one of my friends and I want to tell you a little bit about who he is first before the reveal happens so my friend has a very he's a multi-passionate entrepreneur, incredible business, he writes for the Huffington Post, he's been on Oprah's Life Class and right now, he is on tour with Miss Oprah for her Life Class Tour. I am just in love with his site, I am in love with what he stands for in the world and I could not be more honored to introduce you to Mr. Mastin Kipp- founder of the thedailylove.com. Mastin: Hello, hello! Marie: So we're hanging out here in the West Village and I am so pumped because Mastin and I, I spent some time in L.A. which most of you guys know and when I was there, Mastin and I got together. In fact, where did we have dinner? Mastin: Cafe Gratitude? Marie: Which we adore and we discovered we have lots of friends in common that's actually how we got together in the first place. And your site, the daily love like amazing right? Mastin: Thank you! Well, yeah! A lot of people think it's amazing. I'm still in awe of it myself. Marie: So you didn't start I mean you started it was great. When I was researching, and digging around and finding all kinds of good stuffs about Mastin, he's amazing. What I was surprised actually pleasantly surprised to see that you started your site in 2005. Mastin: Yeah! It's interesting, it's interesting actually the progression because I really used which is like all things being equal the simplest solution and using the correct one and it was exercising patience. The site has only been around for a little over a year but it started out as a newsletter to my friends. It was just like I sent my friends an email literally twenty friends. Half of them the first day I sent them were like get me off this thing I don't want more quotes and so it just started growing and I would meet people and tell them about the quotes and you should check out the quotes and it was none of my own writing or just sharing other people's quotes. And then.. Marie: So that is how it started in 2005. Mastin: Yeah! That's how it started.Yeah, and then I was sharing on facebook. I'm sorry on myspace, the pre-facebook. Marie: Yeah. Mastin: Remember that website? And then people would like I was like in the hipster world. I kinda was like in the emerging American Apparel culture and whenever I'd be out at like the Standard or the Roosevelt of all these hipster kids would be like, “Oh man! I love your quotes.” You know, they'd be listening to like MGMT or you know Block Party or whatever like tell them I was like the quote guy basically and I thought that was really annoying at the time because I really just wanted to fit in like in that community but I was always you know there is always something else going on and then you know it was just an idea on the side. I was managing bands at that time and then after that I started a clothing line and there was always just something inside me that was like you must send out quotes everyday. You just must! Like to help the world it was like that was the source of how it all started. And then one day, a friend of mine came to me and said, "You know, Mastin, you can make a ton of money online" and I was like really? I didn't really understand the internet, I was kinda annoyed by it. Like, I got dragged on twitter because it's just like too much to keep up, too much input coming in. Marie: yeah! Mastin: And so it slowly evolved, and when she, my friend put that idea in my mind, I was like okay, if I'm gonna do this, I'm gonna do it right because I'm into brand creation cause I think when you start with an emotional reason, you can create lots of things around that emotional reason to sell. But if you don't capture the emotion then you're just a commodity otherwise a brand is something that establishes loyalty and speaks to someone in their language in empathy and understanding from like what they point in their journey. So I thought, I'm just gonna start with that because I don't have any products in mind, I don't really know what's gonna happen instead of calling it thoughts of the day which is what it was called, I was like ok, well what's my favorite internet company? At that time it was Daily Candy. And I was obsessed with Daily Candy and it had just gotten bought by Comcast, for like a hundred and twenty-five million dollars. Marie: Yeah! Big deal. Mastin: And I was like, Oh right! Maybe I can do like an inspirational version of that and I am gonna keep the wheel turning. I'm not gonna try to reinvent the wheel so how about daily love? So I went to the thedailylove.com, no one owned it. I was shocked, and I bought it. Yeah! And there I was just like hey! My thing is now called the daily love and I think I have now two hundred seventy subscribers. Marie: What it did was that like you're first like when people go online, it's so funny because I work with a lot obviously online entrepreneurs like how do I figure out this whole email subscription thing? Like did, were you using like Constant Contact? Mastin: Totally! Marie: Yeah! Mastin: I was just using Constant Contact up until a month ago. Marie: That's awesome! It's so awesome. Mastin: I got to like 75,000 people and then I started getting all these people like, "I'm not getting my daily love, I'm not getting my daily love" so I had to like chop. I stopped using it, but my thought was at the beginning. I had no idea what I'm gonna sell but as long as I send stuff out that touches people, they're gonna remember me. So I’m just gonna capture emails. I didn't have a blog, I didn't have content, I didn't have a content strategy, this was before Twitter, this was you know right as Facebook was starting to emerge, and I said I'm just gonna have a landing page that's really simple that just says enter your e-mail and just with a cute logo. And I'm gonna have that cute logo in the newsletter and just everyday with that consistently with just send stuff out and I can remember when I made that switch, people started interacting more. And then I didn't even consider myself to be a writer. Marie: What is this switch? Mastin: When I made this switch from "thoughtsoftheday" to "thedailylove." Marie: And what I mean cause they feel so different. You think about thoughts for the day, it feels very in your head. If you think about the daily love, there's something even in my body that just goes oh! That sounds awesome, I want that. Mastin: Totally. And so yeah! And so it went from that then all of a sudden, you know, I noticed that you know, like wow! Can ten people signed up today, how did they found about it? Like wow! This person signed up then oh! My friend unsubscribed! And you know, started drama with some of them. You know, it was you know I would go, wow! I'm up to like 750. This might get into a thousand people. Marie: Right! Mastin: And then it got to a thousand, one of my friends who was a publicist in this industry was like you're gonna be over 10,000 of people in no time. And I'm like, yeah right! And then you know Kim Kardashian found about it, she tweeted about it. Marie: This was in 2000 and... Mastin: 9. Marie: So this is kinda cool, so think about this. So many people start businesses. They start businesses online or something they believe in and they give up after like six freaking months. You know what I mean or after a year. And I know for me, in my journey, like I've been online for a long time. I've been doing what I'm doing and it wasn't until honestly the past two years where things just started exponentially growing. But you know, you and I are talking a little bit off camera. It's like most people they think you're this like overnight success at least that's the perception. But there's like you've been all this work happening in the background. Mastin: hard-work. Marie: right for. Mastin: Yeah! I mean if you think about you know today with you know like there's an ad that came out where like it says Twitter is faster than an earthquake, did you see that ad? [Marie: No] It shows like this guy in New York. Remember that DC earthquake? Marie: Yeah! Mastin: So there's this hipster guy in the Starbucks, having a coffee, coffee is down on the table and then his iPhone was off, he looks at it, picks up the coffee, the whole coffee shop shakes. Everyone else is nervous, he just says reading this thing holding his coffee up not to spill. He stops, puts it down, and says Twitter: faster than an earthquake. Marie: Amazing! Mastin: Right? I'm like that's amazing! But here's the thing that people didn't understand, just because we had instant access to answer any question at anytime, or we can have infinite variety by going on Facebook or Twitter, or googling anything, it's still takes the same amount of time to establish trust with people. Marie: Yeah! Mastin: Which is not something you can automate or something that you can plan for or strategize. It’s just something that you have to be and you know it's like just because again, just because you can be retweeted a million times doesn't mean you plant a seed on the ground, it's gonna hurry any faster. Marie: Right! Mastin: Nature has it's own pace. And we've forgotten that. Marie: Yeah! It's so important because people get so frustrated and I'm like great things do take time and I've always been one who, like don't you wanna buy more traffic to grow faster and I've been an organic grower my whole business career. It's really been awesome so I wanna ask you okay. So, Kim Kardashian retweeted or said hey, you guys should follow dailylove and everything just kinda had a nice bump.. Mastin: Everyone hears that and they go, how lucky was that but see I think that was a response to a choice I made Marie: Tell me more. Mastin: Because basically like a couple of months before that, I had a clothing line called Love Yourself with a partner and I love my partner tremendously but we started to just kinda go like this and it was like right at the peak of our success we had like clothes on like all these celebrities, photos and we were on all the top stores and international sales and we were in like all the shows. Great show rooms and then we just kinda fell apart. In the same week, our investors pulled out, my partner and I, it was obvious weren't gonna continue, my roommate gave me three day notice of thirty day notice, I got gout in my big foot, which is like for an 85-year old guys who drink beer, cheese and wine, and like red meat which I don't actually eat much, I don't drink, I don't eat red meat and I get gout in my foot but what it is the most painful thing you can't even have a sheet on your foot. Marie: It just sounds really nasty, I don't even really wanna go there. Mastin: And then my lower back went out, the investors pulled out, the girl that I was dating we were sort of seeing each other, that split. And so like I don't have a home in thirty days, I can't walk, I can't pick anything up, the company that I put the last four years of my life was basically gone. And like I'm like everything that I worked for was completely just gone within one week and I was smart enough at that time to realize that this is a divine moment like there is no I could ever have done this. All at the same time. Marie: Yeah! Mastin: And so I choose to interpret it as that and then I had a choice. I could go back into the music business and go get a job or as a joke, my ex-girlfriend's mom had told me if you ever are on hard times, you can stay in our pool-house. And the pool-houses literally 8x8 feet with like a little bathroom and a little closet in it, a shower, it had a shower and then enough room for my bed so I literally had to like I was like okay well no one chooses that, no one on their right mind would go live in an 8x8 room. So I'm gonna gonna go do that and just figure out what's up with this daily love thing because I had like a thousand followers, and a thousand emails, and I was like what can I do with a thousand not make it to ten thousand? If I get ten thousand, I could get at least two grand a month to live. You know. That was my thought, I had no idea how. And so I made that choice. I went into that 8x8 room and a month later, Kim found me and tweeted that and I'm convinced that was a response to me saying yes. Marie: I believe that as well. I believe that a 100%. Mastin: People say, “How did you find Kim Kardashian? Or how did you get Oprah? How did that happen?” Because I said yes! Marie: So, you are in the pool house literally uncomfortable. Kim has discovered you, and yes! It is in response to you having the faith and courage to step out into what you believe in. Tell me more about that uncomfortable period because that's really the place where a lot of people give up. Mastin: Yeah! It was a really interesting time because this house is a beautiful house in the hills in Los Angeles, so I was confined to this very small room yet I would walk outside. I had a huge beautiful view of the valley, and a pool and like a jacuzzi right there but it didn't feel like it was mine so I could never enjoyed it you know. It wasn't like oh! I'm chillin', this is a reflection of what is possible even though I'm in this moment of lack, I was still surrounded by abundance even though it was not my abundance, it's the universe way of saying “Don't give up!”. Does that make sense? Marie: Absolutely! Mastin: And I remember one day I was in this 8x8 room, and I was like talking to the universe, I talk to the universe all the time. And I was like man! You created everything, why couldn't you hook me with like free rent or something like the Chateau Marmont? Like that's possible. And the answer I got back was this room is the size of your faith and it was just like wow! Marie: That was like a universal smack down! Mastin: It was, it was. I remember hearing that and then I remember the next thing I heard was but it's enough. And it was just like I still to this day get chills talking about that and then slowly, like I think a week later was when Kim tweeted. And so I looked at my finances and go ok I got a little bit of money here kind of like left over remnants from. Marie: So how much? Give us, what's a little? Mastin: 14,000 dollars. Marie: $14,000. Mastin: And usually at this point, I was accustomed to spending 3-4 thousand dollars a month, living in Los Angeles, with rent and food and all that kind of stuff minimum. So like, okay that could last me you know 3 months, 4 months you know cut this down as much as possible, and just make this last basically if I can make this last, like I don't have to get a job, I can just cut this down. And so literally I didn't have internet, I had an internet company without internet. Marie: Which is amazing, I love it. Mastin: Right? So I would literally go down to into the neighborhood and borrow wifi in my car like writing my blog with wifi out in the street. And I always knew in my mind like Starbucks closes at 10 and you got to get there and you know when it will be open and literally did it out of Starbucks and coffee beans. And it was just something that I had to do and there was a part of me that I just knew you're tweeting to live. You're emailing to live, like this is your building something of value but it was a tremendous questioning phase. Marie: And what happened you told me a story about calling home to your Mom during this period. Mastin: Yeah, so. You know, our parents love us and one of the ways our parents love us is they want certainty that we're gonna be financially taken care of especially as a 28-year old man. Right? Like that is not a kid, you're not a kid at 28! Get out! You know? And so you know and my dad, he doesn't still really understand what I do. Marie: That's typical by the way. My parents still like, you know don't quite get it you know like she's happy, she's makin' money so it's all good but Mastin: Yeah! My mom got it but still my mom was my biggest supporter. She always encouraged me to go out and to live my adventure you know but when stuff got real like this is real like you're living in your ex-girlfriend's parents' 8x8 pool-room house like there's something kind of pathetic about that almost maybe that is my projection. But Marie: No, no! I mean from the outside looking in, yeah! Mastin: You know so I would call home and so today I wrote this and a reader said this and it was like I would get like one email a day like it would light up my whole day. And now I wish I would only get one. Hehe. But ah.. you know she like that's great honey. So you when are you gonna get a job or like what are you thinking for money and everytime she would say that or my parents would say that, it felt so painful because I'm guys that's not where I'm going. I'm going here. Like I'm not going here, I'm going here. And then everytime they would talk about and ask me like when are you gonna go here it was almost like they were ignoring my heart or my soul. Marie: And what did you say to your mom? Mastin: So one day I called home and it was just so painful to call home and hear this even though I love them so much. So I said, “Mom, you know like I love you and what I'm about to say comes out of love for you, for me and for my calling. Okay? I am doing the daily love, I'm called to it, I don't know what is behind doing number two but I have to find out, if I don't find out, I will die with regret and I do not want to die with regret. I could die tomorrow, but I want to know I gave it my all. So when I call home and you ask me when I'm gonna get a job, the way I feel that right now is you’re saying no to my dream and ask me to give up my dream so that I can have financial security and I'd rather be beach bum in Venice with my laptop with my dream than be a prisoner to someone wandering what if. That is how much I crave and need my freedom and to express myself. So if you keep asking me when I'm gonna get a job, I'm going to stop calling home not because I don't love you. I love you tremendously, but because I love myself and my calling more. And I need to do this.” And I think at that point it sunk in and she never asked me ever again. Marie: That is awesome! Mastin: Yeah! It was one of those things where like, it's hard to do that but you know that's the only thing is that part of being a successful entrepreneur is breaking up with your parents. Marie: Yeah! Mastin: Because they want what they want for you. Marie: It's also I think too it's also part of just being a successful adult, often times you know I have made a very conscious choice at this point in my life and I think it's probably gonna be true moving forward that I don't wanna have kids. I have a step-son but I don't want to have kids and for a while my mom was like dude! Where's the babies? Like when are they coming? And I had to say to my mom, please stop asking. Mastin: Yeah! Marie: If you want another kid? Go to adopt one. Mastin: yeah, totally. Marie: So yeah! Mastin: 100% Marie: It's such a huge lesson and I'm so, it's wonderful to hear you express it like that because it pains so many young people who are trying to start their own thing or living their life in a new and different way. And they don't even have the words it was just perfect the way you expressed that. Mastin: Maslow, thank you! Abraham Maslow said that to be self-actualized, you have to be independent of the good opinion of other people and that includes your parents. You know you need to remember everyone is projecting on to you their model of the world and so when you remember that, all of a sudden it's like my dad and my mom are not God. They are just human being having this experience and projecting on to me what they would want. And I don't think we reached the phase of our evolution where parents go, what does the child's soul want? And I'm willing to risk them dying to have that and I think that's not a very normal thought process. Marie: Yeah, not yet. Mastin: And so, if you take the advice of Steve Jobs like you live like you're dying. You know you get to take a lot more risks. And being an entrepreneur is being like you've got some sort of disease, crazy disease, to be an entrepreneur in the first place because you know, most of the business don't survive the first year and ninety-four percent of businesses fail in the first 10 years. So we are signing up to fail. By nature of what we do. So you know, you have to be a little crazy. Marie: I love it. So I'm gonna move us ahead on the time line. So tell me about when Oprah got in touch with you because I know that is another, it's a huge. It's probably something that's been on most people's vision boards over the past 12 to 15 years, anytime I meet someone new like oh! If I can get on the Oprah so fact that they reach out to you so tell us about that. Mastin: It's interesting because she was on my vision board but I never watched Oprah and now I'm hanging out with them and all I can hear from people is how much she's on people's vision boards and oh my god! How much vision board space is she taking up globally? You know probably like Marie: Massive, massive real estate. Mastin: 50 million vision boards or more. I mean think about that. Marie: At least. Totally. Mastin: It could be like 50 or hundred million people is pretty cool but basically, I had a vision board and I had love on it, I had money on it, I had Hay House on it, I had Huffington post, I had Oprah on it. And I made it but I put it away because--and I wrote a blog about this and people were like “I'm gonna make a vision board!!” because they think the vision board is the answer coz it's so easy to do but what I decided was that I know I resonate at this level. I'm not going to strive after it, I'm just going to be it. Because like the whole metaphysical teaching is you attract what you are. So I'm just gonna conduct myself as if I'm on that level not in an ego place but from a vibrational place. I'm just gonna conduct myself like I made it. I'm gonna speak with authority with certainty. I'm also gonna be completely transparent about what I'm going through. And whatever resonates with me on that level, will come to me. The idea came to me from a book by David Hawkins called Power Versus Force. Marie: I love that book. Mastin: And I was like okay if the Beatles cover resonates high, or certain phrases on the Bible resonates high, I'm going to try my best to resonate with that frequency and just see if this woo woo **** works. right? Marie: right? Mastin: Right! So, over the course of a six month period recently I got the email from Oprah's people and Louise Hay came and saw me speaking and asked me to speak at an event with Wayne Dwyer in New York Maire: Amazing. Mastin:I didn't pitch anyone that there's a strategy and the only thing that i can say is that you know one day I got an email from the general email box which I check every day about scan. Mastin: and there's someone, it said something in the thing about Oprah and I thought I didn't know about. I was like whatever, so I clicked on it and there was ChicagoIllinois@harpo.com and I was like oh my god I still thought it was a joke or something and so they told me that they were starting this thing called Life Class and wanted me to be a part of it and I was just kind of like oh! That's not gonna happen so I kinda wrote them back and said yeah I'll be happy for it and I put no energy towards it and I just kept living my life and they called me a week or two later and they went to this whole interview process and they said they'd get back to me again and said just put that away. I’m not even gonna give Oprah a dime of attention because I'm focusing on building my business, I'm focusing on my purpose, all right I have my eyes towards my creator, because even Oprah is a shiny penny, distraction. I just want to focus on my purpose, focus on my creator, focus on serving, and whatever stays in this field, whatever comes to me in this field is what's meant to come. I made it a intention to practice the feminine quality receptivity in my business. It was an intentional choice, and then they called back and they said we love you and you're going to be on life class asking question to Oprah and Eckhart Tolle and that's when I was like just kidding. Mastin: like are you serious? you know like just kidding and you know it was amazing moment and they interviewed me about the questions I wanted to ask and it was you know and a lot of questions, it actually was surprising me they're actually going to stump the producers, that they were like I never thought about that before, I was like you never thought about that before? Like, Oprah like we're talking about like everyone on, and so yeah it was a really interesting process but the only thing I can say is that I attracted it and even when it started to come, I gave it no attention because it wasn't about it's not-- to me my goal is not about Oprah, it's not about Louise Hay, it's not about any of those things they're fun to play with but for me I'm about service, surrender and impact. And that is it. Marie: yeah Mastin: And whatever comes to form of that surrender to my calling into the world and the universe, I will accept but I'm not trying to strategize my way of formulating contract and you know the publicist can do that but not me. Not as like, I’m really trying to be like that spiritual presence which is very difficult you know especially when you know where your food is coming from every month. Marie: So Life Class, Eckhart, Oprah, dreams come true. Yeah! What happens next? Mastin: It's funny because Eckhart is you know, one of the reason why I got this tattoo on my arm which says, "this too will pass." It was in his book, and it was just like yeah! I just need this right on my arm to remember. So he's been like one of my main teachers and so when I figured it out that he was gonna be on the show, and I'd be asking him a question and asking Oprah a question, it was just like that was my introduction both of them. So there's a part of me that goes just surrender, it's gonna be okay, there's another part of me that just really wants to look good. And there was about three days of technical prep and there made me go to like three different locations coz there were internet, with skype and there were all thing and Oprah's skype kit and it was like a big deal. So and you know the producers are producing it beforehand and you know build up to the moment and they were like “We could cut to you at anytime in the next two hours, so just be ready.” So for two hours you know potentially in front of my computer just like Quee, quee, quee just like ready to go so they cut to me and made sure that everything was perfect and Oprah had like said my name and then Oprah said the dailylove.com and I was like in my head was Oh My God! Right? Like it's actually happening and then I asked my question and then they cut away from me in the middle of my question and I was like, what I was facing the microphone and it did not worked so there was no volume for my mic and it was like part of me was just like so embarrassed coz I'm like Oh my goodness but here's what the redeeming quality was Oprah asked my question to Eckhart, and Eckhart's response was hmm.. never thought about it that way. Which was.. Marie: And what was do you remember the question? Mastin: The question was coz I was talking about ego, instead of making the ego the devil that you are not supposed to get rid of, can't we just like love the ego? The first step to dissolved it? To recognize that it's here? And give it love and like honor it and like you know not make it wrong? Marie: Yup! Mastin: I'm surprised he never thought about that before but it's cool that he didn't. Marie: It's awesome! Mastin: And then it was cool at that moment with all this tension and sweat and stress, I was like can you practice being love in this moment? Looking bad if I have two people like you really want the approval of and the answer was like yes. And I was angry for like 30 seconds and just let it go. And then I was worried maybe that was my one shot and then I say even if that's my one shot, it was one shoot and she said my name and it was cool and then they called me an hour later and said we want you to be back on tomorrow with another question because we like to have another question because we care about you. And it was awesome and that led to being on tour, so it's a letting go. Marie: Awesome! I love that. The one thing I want to talk about before we wrap up. So much good stuff, I feel like we could talk for hours but you know one of your favorite quotes again when we were talking before the cameras went on was about and from Amelia Earhart. So you wanna tell us that story? Mastin: Yeah! There was a movie Amelia about Amelia Earhart and at the end of the quote, she's flying off into her death and it's like a beautiful sunset or sunrise and this was right around the time this was the quote that inspired me to have the conversation with my mom. As she's flying into the sunset it says, “Everyone has oceans to fly if they have the heart. Is it reckless? Yes! But what do dreams know of boundaries?” And it was just like, I still just get chills like hearing that because like that, that sums up the whole journey. Yeah! Like we all have it, we all can embrace it and it's completely counterintuitive to everything that we've learned for our survival. And you know, yes! A lot of people will email me and when I write about that, and go, "Mastin! But she died!" And my response to them has always been I rather die living my dream than die coward. And you know, coz no moment's guaranteed you know but for me, if living my dream and having to receive jobs like make a dent in the universe, it requires you to face your death metaphorically and literally. Marie: Absolutely. Mastin: You know and so I think that's the number one thing holding people back is this like if you can transcend your fear of death, you can accomplish a lot. Marie: So awesome! So our MarieTV audience is incredibly interactive and they love to have great discussions, so I think we should challenge everybody who's watching at home. Mastin: That's good. Marie: What is holding you back? Like do you have this big dream? If you think about that quote, that beautiful Amelia Earhart quote. What's the dream that you want so bad? What could possibly be holding you back from it? Then do you want to share anything to challenge them to we want you to put your comments below by the way to have a discussion about this because I think it will really be rich. Because I know, when people really start to think about this, they're like-- I've coached many people and they're like, “I buried that dream that long ago and didn't think that was possible.” That's the thing that you need to go for. That's the thing that you need to live for. That's the thing that will bring you alive. Mastin: Absolutely! I think that you know we talked about this but it's really just about you know if you knew you were already dead, if you knew you had nothing to lose, and if you knew anything was possible, what would you do? Tell us right here. Marie: tell us. Tell us. Tell us. We want to hear it, we want to hear it all. Mastin, thank you so much for being with us today. Mastin: It's my pleasure. Marie: This is awesome.
