way are an African American congregation by a history, tradition, culture and ritual.
But the values are values that are university.
So trying to achieve with Dr King called the more beloved community is something we've been able to share with everyone.
My name is Reverend Ju Wan's A Karim Colden.
I'm the pastor of the Olivet Institutional Baptist Church here in the city of Cleveland.
It's really a tale of two.
Cleveland's here you can finally, world class institutions, great universities, first class medical facilities.
But then you go a few blocks over, and there are pockets like Fairfax, where people are struggling just to make ends meet.
City of Cleveland has a 37% poverty rate, and so for years we've done things like food lines, where we provide more than 5000 families over £100,000 of food every year.
One of the things that we realized as we were continuing to provide for needs, the lines weren't getting shorter for all the people that we were feeding.
We would see the same people the next week, and so the question for us was, how do we create a ladder for people to climb out of these generational cycles of poverty.
Jobs is always a challenge here in Fairfax.
Way often hear that there are plenty of good jobs.
They're out there, but we don't have.
People are qualified to fill them because they're not probably skills.
They're not properly trained.
If we can have a role in connecting people to the opportunity to the training for us, that's a win.
And so well partnered with Google, who understands what the technology is and what it takes in order for people to participate in a changing economy provided us all with the command line cold.
Make sure you have that reference.
I t jobs are growing and expanding into the future.
The Google I T certificate program allows people to retool themselves so they can get the kind of jobs that support their families.
Have five kids and I'm a pharmacy technician.
My trade.
There's a real ceiling on what you can actually make.
I went to school for computer science, but I wasn't able to finish due to some financial constraints.
I was in the Air Force and I did contracting.
I got out in 92.
I was laid off in 2016.
It was devastating because I knew that times have changed.
The beauty of the program is that it allows you to go through the different labs with I t professionals with a shell or a graphical user.
We're learning about users and permissions, troubleshooting I t security operating systems and programs.
I love it.
They are truly turning this community around.
You don't find this type of opportunity nowhere, especially in our neighborhood.
It's one thing Thio give out, but it's another when you're able to have people learn and provide for themselves.
I don't believe that I can empower anyone.
I believe that people have power.
I only can help them recognize that they have it so they can reach their own potential.
What I'm trying to say is that you got to have the kind of vision.
Even if I'm not where I want to be.
I can still see that.
God got something in front of me.
