  • high in this video, we're going to write a task to response to a question that was seen on last week's exam on 7 January 2017.

  • So the question that was seen is some people feel raising the age limit required for obtaining a driver's license can enhance road safety with this.

  • Be an effective strategy in your country.

  • Okay, so there are a number of ways that we could respond to this essay question.

  • We could create a discussion out of this and sort of look at both sides and come to some sort of reason.

  • Conclusion.

  • My advice is always to do what is easiest, because, of course, we want to work any angle we can in the examination room to enhance our mark.

  • So given this question, I would suggest the candidate right, a very straightforward argument essay.

  • So just kind of choose a position and then come up with some supporting points and and support that position on dhe.

  • Then, even if we if we look at the problem itself, um, I think it would be very easy to create arguments that support this.

  • So raising the age limit.

  • For example, in Canada, the age limit is 16 and you actually don't get your full driver's license until you're about 18 years old.

  • But for the for the purpose of simplifying everything in my asset, I probably wouldn't get into explaining all of that.

  • I just make 16 the age limit and then talk about reasons why giving a person a driver's license when they're 16 years old, um, would increase road safety issues.

  • So of course we could talk about things like maturity.

  • We could talk about things like emotional development, particularly among young men, which is something that I kind of brainstorm what I was thinking about this question.

  • So I think that in supporting this position, it actually leads us to a lot of really, you know, easy points that we can come up with.

  • And, um, and that makes the entire, you know, essay writing process a lot more straightforward.

  • Okay, so I'm going to write a, um, an argument essay that supports this position and just the way that it's worded because, you know, it says, would this be an effective strategy in your country?

  • There is going to be some personal language.

  • I'm gonna make reference to my country in the essay.

  • I'm going to talk about Canada in particular and Canadian law when it comes to issuing driver's licenses.

  • And so, of course, if you were writing this essay, you have to focus on your own country and its loss.

  • Okay, so the two points that I'm going to use to support, um, this position, um, are the maturity level of a person when they're 16 years old and the motivators that would push a person to get a driver's license.

  • So my argument is basically that at 16 you're probably motivated to get a license because, you know, you want more independence, you want to hang out with your friends and these sorts of things.

  • And so the argument is, is that this is probably going to lead to road safety issues in a way that is not apparent when somebody is 20 year older.

  • Or at least, you know, the um, the degree to which this would cause road safety issues is less when you're when you're older than 16.

  • Okay, so the first thing, of course, is we need to create a an introduction paragraph that outlines what we're going to talk about in the rest of the essay.

  • So I'm gonna bring up these two points as well.

  • Im gonna talk a vote.

  • Canada.

  • I'm gonna make clear to the Examiner what the age limit is in Canada, and I'm going to continue to reference that throughout the rest of the essay.

  • So let's pull it together.

  • So of course, we want some sort of background sentence on the topic, so I might start with something like the age at which a person is legally able to drive is a very important consideration.

  • Okay, so we're not getting any specifics yet, but we're just pointing out that we do recognize this is obviously something that has to be taken very seriously in my home country, Canada.

  • Um, so it's a successful test takers.

  • Um, I can drive independently at the age of 16.

  • Okay.

  • And so again, I'm keeping this kind of simple.

  • I mean, the actual process.

  • Like I was saying, it would take you to the age of 18 before you can actually drive completely independently.

  • But, uh, just Okay, so I think I also want to point out in the sentence that I feel that this is too young, so I could throw in a comma and write something like an age that I feel is too young.

  • Okay, so in that one sentence I'm sharing, you know what the age level is in Canada and whether you know what my position is on that whether I thinkit's too young or not.

  • Now I want to connect this to what the wth e question says.

  • So some people feel raising the age limit is required for obtaining a driver's license.

  • Ah, so some people feel raising the age limit require for obtaining a driver's license can enhance road safety.

  • So I'm gonna connect this back to that question, say, whether I agree with it or not.

  • So, um, I would say something like, I ve s agree that raising the driving age limit in my country, uh, would enhance, um, road safety.

  • Okay.

  • And I'm even borrowing a word or two from the question.

  • A little bit of picking like that is is okay.

  • I mean, of course, you don't want to copy the question it word for word, but, you know, it's it's very clear to the Examiner that this part of the introduction directly responds to the question.

  • Okay, so there's no there's no real question.

  • The examiners mind what my position is with regards to the task to description that we've received.

  • So now that I've extended my position, as you know, of course, I want to just give up a very brief preview to the points I'm going to use to support this position.

  • So to prove this, I will Look, that's, uh, drivers.

  • Um, maturity, um, and the motivators, uh, behind their decision, Dr.

  • Okay.

  • And so, of course, all of this is you know, you been up to your your position on the topic of these are things that you want to decide before you actually put your pen to paper and start writing the TSA.

  • Okay?

  • Because you want to demonstrate to the examiner that you have.

  • I mean, even though your time is limited that you have put some thought into how you're going to reveal your position and structure the essay, okay?

  • And it helps with cohesion, of course, because in setting it up like this, it's connecting to what you're gonna talk about in the rest of the essay.

  • So it creates a lot of nice linking between the different parts Okay, so that's the introduction, you know, very straightforward.

  • Let's go to our first supporting paragraph.

  • Of course, we're gonna look at the topic of maturity.

  • So, uh, firstly, um, the experimental Nick, True of the biggest since the adolescent, um, growth stage mates.

  • Um, we could say even a dangerous time.

  • Good.

  • A dangerous time at which to drive.

  • Okay, Um okay, so s so now we're gonna connect this with an example.

  • I'm going to just kind of pull examples out of the air ops.

  • They don't have scientific evidence in front of me.

  • You know, linking adolescent maturity levels.

  • Thio two road accidents.

  • So and you won't either when you're in the examination room, so it's it's, you know, it's important to note that you can make up your own examples as long as they are believable, and they're not too far fetched as long as you're you're showing that you're capable of using language to show how one tangible item proves a position.

  • You know, it's it's all right, the examiners not gonna not gonna check up whether your examples are truthful or not.

  • I mean, unless you say something that's completely outlandish, but so let's come up with an example here.

  • Um, maybe.

  • No, I want to talk about adolescent males because that's that's the easy point to make here.

  • So adolescent, um, men, for example, um, are scientifically, um, reported boarded to have heightened levels of aggression and, um, competitiveness.

  • Ah.

  • And then we can play with the idea that these air traits that's the latest.

  • Callie diminish.

  • Um, you know, as you get older, they were trying to connect it to the idea that, you know, as people get older, they're more capable of driving without causing accidents, so that statistically diminish by the time, Um, by the time they are 20 years old.

  • Okay, let me just read that again.

  • Adolescent men, for example, are scientifically reported to have heightened levels of aggression and competitiveness traits that statistically diminished by the time you're 20 years old.

  • Okay, so what we're saying is aggression and competitiveness.

  • Um, you know, signs of maturity.

  • These things are more prevalent when you're 16 years old and less prevalent when you're 20 years old.

  • So the obvious conclusion that we're trying to draw from this is that you know, 16 is too young to be issuing a driver's license to somebody.

  • Okay, so, uh, we want to kind of create a logical lead towards that conclusion.

  • So thus, um, removing people thrown two.

  • These, um, these I can't get to maturity and some of these more immature emotions.

  • Um, sorry, man.

  • But writer's block here, because Because we can't say competitiveness is an immature emotion.

  • Let's see, eso this ruling people prone to prone to these emotions can clearly have real ramifications, Uh, on the overall sea of right in Canada.

  • Okay, so that's removing.

  • People proud of these emotions completely have real ramifications.

  • The overall safety of driving in Canada.

  • Okay, now, you know what?

  • I actually would probably cross this out in my essay and competitiveness, because, I mean, we're talking about maturity levels in this paragraph, and I mean to say that competitiveness is a sign of maturity.

  • Maybe that's that's not entirely accurate, But aggression, I think, is fair.

  • So I would just leave it like that, Okay.

  • And then, of course, there was only one trait that treat that's statistically diminishes by the time they're 20 years old.

  • Okay.

  • All right.

  • So now we want to make a crystal clear conclusion in this paragraph that links us right back up to the essay questions that the Examiner, when they finish this paragraph, they say to themselves, Oh, it's so clear why or what this this paragraph proves and how it connects to the overall essay question And that, of course, wins you marks for cohesion.

  • Because you're linking different parts of the essay together.

  • It wins you marks for task achievement.

  • Um, and overall coherence, if everything is is linked properly and makes sense.

  • So, um, so let's see that, uh, increasing driving age should they're poor.

  • Uh, they're for be supported, all right?

  • And I blinked it to my country.

  • So we're fulfilling all prints.

  • The essay question here.

  • Okay, let's go to our second example, which is the idea that people are motivated differently to drive and, you know, when you're younger, when you're 16 the motivation is probably to, you know, have a place to hang out with your friends.

  • That's the argument we're gonna make here.

  • Whether that's this creature or not is another case.

  • But on then we're going to see that these motivators changes.

  • You get a little bit older, so when you get into your twenties.

  • The motivator might be more professional.

  • You need a car, and you need to be able to drive t to be able to get to work And that that these, you know, motivators set up scenarios that are are less prone to accidents.

  • Okay, So if you're hanging out with your friends, when When?

  • If that's the scenario, then you're gonna be more likely to be distracted by something.

  • And that could be a cause of an accident versus if you're driving to work or driving alone than these distractions might not be so much.

  • Okay, so kind of a complicated idea, but we'll try to crunch down from a fight here in this next paragraph.

  • So now let's create a bit of a link from the earlier paragraph so we could use something like this.

  • Position is further exemplified.

  • Um, when looking at motivators meters, looking at motivators behind behind the person's decision.

  • Dr.

  • Okay.

  • Um, Okay, So now keeping its specific candidate, I'm gonna say for 16 year olds in Canada, uh, you know, years to be so bold in nature, social in nature.

  • A cz used for meat.

  • Bring.

  • Okay, Just read it again.

  • So this position is further exemplified when looking at motivators behind a person's decision to drive for 16 year olds in Canada.

  • Thes motivators tend to be social in nature, such as using a car to meet friends.

  • Okay, so now we could even demonstrate to the Examiner a bit of concession here.

  • So we could say that that, you know, obviously adolescents giving them some independence is, um, you know, it's part of a healthy upbringing.

  • It's It's probably a sign that they are socially able people.

  • So way could say that although this is true, it's not strong enough evidence to sacrifice safety on the roads is what we're saying.

  • So, uh, although maybe many would argue our blue that, uh, this is, um, I sign really healthy social development in a young person.

  • Yeah, uh, so we'll say it's driving arrangement, you know, like having friends in a car together that, uh, sets up base.

  • And are you So Merrill sets of scenarios that can be very distracting four and experienced driver.

  • Okay, sure, it's correct, although many would argue this.

  • And of course, we're referring to, you know, young people in the 16 year old years old being able to meet each other and exercise new levels of independence that this is a sign of healthy social element of human being.

  • It is a driving arrangement that sets up scenarios that could be very distracting for an inexperienced driver.

  • Okay, so, uh, for example, traffic accidents.

  • Um, I'm just gonna make up an example here are reportedly reportedly higher among 16 to 18 years olds again, just totally making this up.

  • But, you know, we don't have the Internet on our exam room, so we need some sort of evidence to share to prove our points here, um, traveling in cars with several passengers.

  • Okay, so in Canada, for example, traffic accidents who reportedly higher among 16 80 year old year olds traveling in cars with several passengers.

  • Okay, so I mean, basically, the thinking here is that so young people are motivated to drive because they want to meet their friends.

  • But this means that there are going to be more people in the car with them and that this is setting up a scenario that is more common when you're 16.

  • Then when you're older, that a scenario that is likely to lead to more traffic accidents So because, uh, because motivators maybe change or shipped.

  • So we want to say that people's motivations shift as they get older, Um, or because motivators, let's see the because become blessed social kind of person interviews there you could raise thinking older, whatever, um, statistic.

  • Statistically, for statistics suggest canyon roads would be safer word.

  • The age limit of, um, driver's raised.

  • Okay, I think that's pretty good.

  • So because motivators become less social as a person enters their twenties citizens Jessica, any roads to be safer were the age limit of drivers raised.

  • Let's just read that paragraph from the beginning.

  • Make sure it's kind of flowing logically, so this position is further exemplifying when looking at motivators behind a person's decision to drive for 16 year olds in Canada.

  • These motivators tend to be social in nature, such as using a car to meet friends, although many would argue this is a sign of a healthy of healthy social development of the human being.

  • It is a driving arrangement that sets up scenarios that can be very distracting for an inexperienced driver.

  • In Canada, for example, traffic accidents are reportedly higher among 16 18 year olds traveling in cars with several passengers Because motivators become less social as a person enters their twenties, statistics suggest that Canadian roads would be safer where the age limit of drivers raised.

  • I'm gonna stick in your end their motivations for driving.

  • Um, you cold?

  • Okay.

  • Just kind of the point out that I mean, the base of the point is that the reasons why they're driving are less social, so statistically would produce some fewer accidents.

  • Okay, based on, you know, everything in this paragraph is kind of made up, but anyways, we're just trying to demonstrate our language.

  • Of course.

  • So that's okay.

  • So So now we've put some good points.

  • We have created some some good arguments and made up some good examples, and we've linked everything back to the central point of the essay.

  • So all we have to do now is a very quick review of what we've gone over.

  • And then, you know, kind of reiterate our position and offer a closing for the essay.

  • And so, at something like stock, as the letter shows, you could almost write that on any essay a zero shows raising any ancestor that is the age of our ask which a person can dry would increase the safety, um, of roads, ref.

  • Roads are roads in the country with a specific spin that the question honest, Um and then So Okay, so we've addressed the essay question.

  • We've addressed our position on driving age and its relation to our country or to my country.

  • So I'm gonna share kind of ah, next week of finishes.

  • If you watch other videos, is to share some sort of hope of prediction for the future based on what you've been talking about.

  • Um, so I'm gonna say it is hoped.

  • Um or I can say it is my hope that you, um let's see, Maybe Canada does indeed take steps to put this new restriction on driving your face.

  • Okay, so just very brief little conclusion that kind of links everything together, get some closure to the idea.

  • As the above shows, raising the age at which a person can drive would increase the safety of roads in my country.

  • It is my hope that Canada doesn't he take steps to put this new restriction on driving in place.

  • Okay, so let's read the essay from the top, and you'll notice that that the essay from the very beginning, it's already working to link the different areas together.

  • Okay, so there's a very strong sense of cohesion in this piece.

  • Everything in the essay directly links back to the essay question, so there will be no question in the examiners mind whether we have fulfilled the task or not.

  • So just to make sure we've got the whole story, let's read even through the question as well.

  • So some people feel raising the age limit required for obtaining a driver's license can enhance road safety.

  • Would this be an effective strategy in your country?

  • The age at which a person is legally able to drive is a very important consideration in my home country of Canada.

  • Successful test takers can drive independently at the age of 16 and age that I feel is too young.

  • I disagree that raising the driving age limit in my country would enhance road safety.

  • To prove this, I will look at a driver's maturity and the motivators behind the decision to drive okay.

  • Firstly, the experimental nature of adolescent growth of the adolescent growth stage makes it a dangerous time at which to drive adolescent men, for example, are scientifically reported to have heightened levels of aggression, a trait that statistically diminishes by the time they're 20 years old, thus removing people prone to these, um uh, emotions.

  • I want to stick an immature here just to kind of think it better to Thea to the topic.

  • So these were listening more immature emotions.

  • Okay, um can clearly have real ramifications on the overall safety of driving in Canada.

  • Increasing the driving age should therefore be supported.

  • So and another thing is that you should notice all of these little linking words.

  • You'll see one and pretty much every sentence.

  • I mean, even for example.

  • So it tells you that there's something that's kind of that's come before that you're trying to provide tangible evidence of, of course, Firstly, uh, yeah, even little words like it's like you're referring to other items that within the sense that service helps everything kind of connect together more.

  • Okay, so let's continue.

  • This position is further exemplified when looking at motivators behind a person's decision to drive for 16 year olds in Canada.

  • These motivators tend to be social in nature, such as using a car to meet friends.

  • Although many would argue this is a sign of a healthy social of healthy social development of the human being.

  • It is a driving arrangement that sets up scenarios that can be very distracting for an inexperienced driver.

  • Okay, and as I was pointing out, we have a nice little instance of concession.

  • You don't necessarily have to use concession on your essay.

  • It's very It's fine to completely focus on your position and make sure that you're proving your position.

  • But, you know, being able to offer a little concession without having your entire essay get derailed.

  • I mean, when you read this, you know that I'm not.

  • I'm not going against what I'm saying.

  • I'm just saying that that there is some merit to the argument that 16 year olds being able to drive by themselves does build there.

  • There may be the confidence of their their their ability to operate as an independent individual s.

  • I'm not saying that that's not true.

  • All I'm saying is that despite that, the greater truth or the what I feel is the better argument is that young people, when they're 16 when they're driving with their friends, that sets up a scenario that could cause accidents.

  • Okay, so it is a driving arrangement that sets up scenarios that could be very distracting for an inexperienced driver.

  • In Canada, for example, traffic accidents are reportedly higher among 16 to 18 year olds traveling and cars with several passengers because motivators become less social as a person, interested twenties statistics suggest Canadian roads would be safer, where the age limit of drivers raised and their motivations for driving evolved.

  • Okay, okay.

  • And I'm gonna even sticking here reads like we're referring back to.

  • Some of these statistics suggest, um, like, excuse me, that this reported the higher among 16 18 year olds.

  • Okay, so referring back to these statistics, I can't little more cohesion.

  • They're as the above shows raising the each limit of which a person can drive would increase the safety of roads in my country.

  • It is my hope that Canada does indeed take steps to put this new restriction on driving in place.

  • Okay, so I hope that that sample essie was helpful to you.

  • If you have any questions, you can leave a comment in the video's gonna try to put more videos out this year than I did last year.

  • So hopefully you'll join me for that, uh, wishing everybody a great 2017.

  • And I'm looking forward to receiving your own success stories this year.

  • Have a great day, and we'll see in the next video.

high in this video, we're going to write a task to response to a question that was seen on last week's exam on 7 January 2017.
