If you are applying for a higher position, either with your current employer or a different company altogether, please do make sure you watch this tutorial from beginning to end, because I'm going to give you some common job promotion interview questions and top-scoring answers. Now, I will also give you a number of tips whilst I go through this tutorial to explain how you need to perform during your promotion interview. Now, before I do that, a very warm welcome to this promotion interview training tutorial. My name is Richard McMunn. That's me there in the center. I have been helping people for about 20 years now to pass their interviews and I always do that by giving you top scoring answers you can't find anywhere else. I am a former Fire Officer of 17 years and I've been to many, many job promotion interviews myself. I passed the majority of them and I did that by being fully prepared for the interview and also giving the interview panel examples of where I had excelled within my previous roles and more importantly, what I could bring to this new job. Do consider those things when you are preparing for your own job promotion interview. Before I get into the tutorial, a couple of quick things. OK. Let's get into those job promotion interview questions and answers. My advice is to take notes as I progress and where you feel necessary, please do pause the video and write down anything you feel is applicable to yourself. The first promotion interview question I want you to prepare for is: tell me about yourself and why we should promote you to this position? We want to give them a very strong answer that is positive in nature and also that demonstrates that you are the standout candidate for this higher position. Here we go. “I am very ambitious, entirely focused on achieving my employer’s commercial and financial objectives and also someone who wants to grow, thrive and develop with a company and team who has exiting and ambitious plans for the future. I believe you should promote me to this position because my career has taken a consistent upward trajectory, both in terms of the achievements I have gained, the successful work I have carried out for my employer, and also the fact I consider myself to be a totally committed member of the organization. With me, I strongly believe you will see an immediate positive difference once I am in the position, and more importantly, a positive return on your investment. I can assure you, if you promote me, I will not let you down and I will work hard to repay the trust you have shown in me.” That's a great answer, not just in terms of the content, but also how you deliver it. My advice would be to carry out a mock interview before you go along to your promotion interview. You could even, if you wanted to, sit in front of a mirror and practice these questions. Look at how you are answering them. And in my view, at a promotion interview, it's very important to be entirely positive how you put yourself across. Be really ENTHUSIASTIC! You really want this job. And there is a difference between being desperate and being enthusiastic and committed for a promotion job interview. Make sure you are enthusiastic, because that will help to persuade the interview panel that you are the right person for this higher position job. Next promotion interview question I want you to prepare for is: Prove to me you are ready for this higher role? So, prove to me you are ready for this higher role? How do we answer this question? Here we go. “I am ready for this higher role specifically for four reasons. The first reason is, over the years I have gained the necessary skills, qualities and experience to carry out the responsibilities to a very standard. The second reason is, I am totally committed to the vision and mission of your company and I genuinely feel passionate about the products and services you offer. The third reason is, I will consistently dedicate the time and energy needed in the role to get up to speed quickly so I can support the organization and help it continually thrive and develop. Finally, I already have a definitive plan in place of what I intend to do within the role, which means I am totally confident I will be successful in regard to the responsibilities I will have in the position.” What I like about that answer is you have already thought about the question, but more importantly, you are giving a set number of reasons why you are ready for this role. And in this case, there are four reasons. The first one is that you believe you have gained the necessary skills and experiences. The second one you are saying you are totally committed to their vision and their mission… so you are aligning your skills to the company's mission statement. The third reason is you will consistently dedicate the time and energy needed because let's face it, within any promotion, you're going to have to put more time and energy into it. And finally, you already know what you are going to do in the position. And I think that's a brilliant thing to do, is to consider what you are going to do in the position if you are successful. Now, I can pretty much guarantee nobody else will do this during the promotion interview. But you already have a plan in place that also helps you because one of the questions you could get asked would be, what would you do within the first 30 days of starting? So let's answer that interview question: What would you do during your first 30 days in this in this role? Have a think about what you would do with in the job if you did get it. And this shows that you are fully prepared. You are already visualizing yourself in the role, which is very positive, and you are thinking about what you would do. So here is my suggested answer to the promotion interview question, what would you do during your first 30 days in this role? Here we go. “I already have a solid plan in place for what I intend to do within this new role. Within the first 30 days, I will gain a concise brief from you, the senior company managers, to ascertain exactly what you want me to achieve in the role and to also gain clarity as to how my work must align to the strategic objectives. I will then monitor my team for two weeks to ascertain their strengths, and also any areas for opportunity I can see for immediate improvement and development. Then, I will create a plan of action that includes short and long terms objectives to ensure the team and the department I am responsible for achieve the tasks I want them to achieve based on the organizational goals.” So that plan there demonstrates that you are going to work in line with the company objectives, which would be very attractive to me as a company owner. The fact is, you're not going to go straight into a department or a team and make changes immediately without first of all looking what the strengths are and ascertaining whether there are any areas for improvement. And I think that's very important. When you're taking a promotion, you go into a new team, you shouldn't just go in there and make immediate changes to stamp your authority. A clever manager would take their time. Have a look to see what they need to do. And then finally, you create a PLAN OF ACTION that includes short and long term objectives. And again, those are aligned to the organizational goals. So you are showing them that you are a responsible person and you put the best interests of the organization first. So, how would you deal with your work colleagues who have been passed up on this promotion? Here is my suggested answer. “I would deal with my work colleagues by disengaging in general conversation and also not talking about my promotion in front of them. I would be professional, support them moving forward and encourage them to keep trying for promotion in the future if any opportunities were to arise with our company. I would also remember that I would have new responsibilities myself, and a new level of authority that would mean my behavior would need to be that of a more senior member of the organization. I would always be professional around all work colleagues and embrace positively the change that promotion would bring.” So, what I like about that is you are saying, you know, you are not going to rub the noses of your work colleagues in the fact that you got promoted. You are going to be professional. You're going to disengage in general conversation, but you all are also going to EMBRACE this new promotion that comes at a level of responsibility that comes with it. That would show to me that you are a mature and professional person, supportive of your colleagues and encouraging them to work towards promotion again in the future if that situation was to arise for them. Because if people don't get promoted, naturally, they're going to feel disheartened. And it can be difficult sometimes to motivate people. Which brings me on to the next question. What would you do if you failed to get promoted? This question gets asked a lot and it's assessing your levels of maturity. What would you do if you didn't get promoted? And there is, in my view, only really one great answer to this promotion interview question. And here it is. “I will be naturally disappointed because I really do want this job. However, I will understand that you don’t feel yet that I am the right person to help take the company forward, and I will carry on working hard in my current role. I would be back again though, applying for promotion with this company in the future, as I see this as the place I want to work with a great bunch of people and a management team who are clearly focused on bringing continual success to the organization.” That is a great answer because it shows that you are mature. You would take it on the chin positively. And you could also say, in addition to what I've put there, that I would ask for feedback to see which areas I would need to improve on. So when I do apply again, I would be better prepared. That's a great answer to that question. Now, my advice is to download my manager interview questions.
