It is such an honor to be here at the inaugural Time To Thrive conference,

but it's a little weird too.

但感覺也有一點奇怪

Here I am in this room

來到這裡

because of an organization whose work I deeply deeply admire.

因為我對這個組織所做的一切深深的感到敬佩

And I'm surrounded by people who make it their life's work to make other people's lives better,

身邊有很多的人，他們一生的志業就是致力讓其他人的生命更美好

profoundly better.

真真切切的變得更好

Some of you teach young people.

有些人教導年輕朋友

Some of you help young people heal and find their voice.

有些人幫助年輕朋友療傷、找尋他們的聲音

Some of you listen.

有些人懂得傾聽

Some of you take action.

有些人起身行動

Some of you are young people yourselves,

其中不乏你們本身就是這個年輕的世代

in which case it's even weirder for a young person like me to be speaking to you.

在這種情況下，我在你們面前致詞就顯得更奇怪

It's weird because

真的很奇怪是因為

here I am — an actress,

做為一名女演員

representing in at least some sense an industry that places crushing standards on all of us;

多少代表了在這個行業裡，它對我們所有人設立了嚴苛的標準

and not just young people.

不只影響年輕世代

Everyone.

Standards of beauty,

對美貌的準則

of a good life,

對美好人生的標準

of success.

Standards that, I hate to admit, have affected me.

You have ideas planted in your head,

這些想法在你腦中揮之不去

thoughts that you never had before

任由這些陌生的想法

that tell you how you have to act,

how you have to dress

教你要如何穿著合宜

and who you have to be.

And I have been trying to push back,

而我一直試著抗拒

to be authentic and to follow my heart.

But it can be hard.

But that's why I'm here.

In this room,

all of you, all of us

can do so much more together than any one person can do alone.

And I hope that that thought bolsters you as much as it does me.

I hope that the workshops you go to over the next few days give you strength

because I can only imagine

that there are days when you've worked longer hours than your boss realizes or care about

just to help a kid who you know can make it.

Days when you feel completely alone,

某些日子裡，當你感到極度的空虛

undermined or hopeless.

And I know there are people in this room who go to school every day and get treated like shit for no reason.

而我也知道在座有很多人 每天上學的時候 就必須無故必須承受那些冷嘲熱諷

Or you go home and you feel like you can't tell your parents the whole truth about yourself.

或是當你回到家 卻沒有辦法在你的父母面前做回自己

And beyond putting yourself in one box or another you worry about the future;

你急忙著把自己放在不同的框架裡 又要同時擔心著自己的未來

about college or work

擔心上大學，擔心工作

or even your physical safety.

甚至擔心起你的自身的安全

And trying to create that mental picture of your life,

而試著想像你內心世界的藍圖

of what on earth is going to happen to you

想像可能發生在你身上的事情

can crush you a little bit every day.

每天一點一滴就能侵蝕你的心靈

And it is toxic

這不只有害

and painful

還很痛苦

and deeply unfair.

也令人深感不平

And sometimes it's the little insignificant stuff that can tear you down.

有時候只是一些枝微末節的事情，就可以把你擊垮

Now I try not to read gossip as a rule,

現在我試著不去碰那些八卦新聞

but the other day a website ran an article

但前幾天一個網站發表了一篇文章

with a picture of me wearing sweatpants on the way to the gym.

附上一張我穿著運動棉褲去健身房的照片

And the writer asked,

接著文章作者發問

"Why does this petite beauty insist upon dressing as a massive man?"

為何這個漂亮小妞堅持穿得像個大隻佬？

Because I like to be comfortable.

因為這樣穿讓我感到舒服阿

There are pervasive stereotypes about masculinity and femininity

這裡面有太多對男子氣概或女性陰柔無所不在的刻板印象

that define how we're all supposed to act, dress and speak

這決定我們應有的行為舉止、穿著和說話方式

and they serve no one.

對任何人來說卻是一無是處

Anyone who defies these so-called norms becomes worthy of comment and scrutiny.

任何人就拿著「正常」的放大鏡徹底的去檢視和評論他人

And the LGBT community knows this all to well.

而LGBT的朋友們對此也非常了然於心

Yet there is courage all around us.

但我們之中仍然存在著那些勇敢的人

The football hero Michael Sam,

像是美式足球英雄Michael Sam

the actress Laverne Cox,

女演員 Laverne Cox

the musicians Tegan and Sara Quinn,

歌手Tegan 和Sara Quinn

the family who supports their daughter or son who has come out.

和那些支持他們的兒女走出櫃中的家庭

And there is courage in this room.

還有在這裡，充滿勇氣的你們

All of you.

你們每一位

And I'm inspired to be in this room because every single one of you is here for the same reason

我被你們鼓舞 因為每個人都因為相同的理由來到這裡

You're here because you've adopted as a core motivation

你們在這裡 就是一起相信著一個重要又簡單的事實

the simple fact that this world would be a whole lot better if we just made an effort to be less horrible to one another.

只要我們能夠竭盡所能的善待他人 這世界就會變得更好

If we took just five minutes to recognize each other's beauty instead of attacking each other for our differences.

如果我們肯花五分鐘 好好欣賞彼此的美而不是因為差異而互相攻擊

That's not hard.

其實並不難

It's really an easier and better way to live.

這樣生活才能更自在更美好

And ultimately it saves lives.

最終也能挽救更多的生命

Then again it can be the hardest thing.

然而這卻又是困難重重的事

Because loving other people starts with loving ourselves and accepting ourselves.

因為學會愛別人之前 要先懂得如何愛自己、接受自己本來的樣子

And I know many of you have struggled with this.

我知道很多人為此事煩惱

And I draw upon your strength and your support in ways that you will never know.

你們不會曉得 我是因為你們的支持和力量才走到現在

And I am here today because I am gay.

今天我會站在這裡 更因為我是一名同志

And because—

maybe I can make a difference

to help others have an easier and more hopeful time.

Regardless for me I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility.

I also do it selfishly

也出自於我個人的私心

because I'm tired of hiding

由於我厭倦了躲藏

and I'm tired of lying by omission.

厭倦了我的生活中充斥謊言、視而不見

I suffered for years because I was scared to be out.

My spirit suffered,

my mental health suffered,

我的心理健康受折磨

and my relationship suffered.

And I'm standing here today with all of you on the other side of that pain.

And I am young, yes.

But what I have learned is that love—

the beauty of it,

the joy of it

and, yes, even the pain of it—

is the most incredible gift to give and to receive as a human being.

And we deserve to experience love fully,

There are too many kids out there suffering from bullying, rejection

or simply being mistreated for who they are.

或者只是因為他們的身分而被無情的對待

Too many dropouts.

太多的中輟生

Too much abuse.

太多的欺凌辱罵

Too many homeless.

太多無家可歸的人

Too many suicides.

太多的自殺事件

You can change that

你可以改變

and you are changing it.

而你正在改變中

But you never needed me to tell you that.

但你們從不需要我來告訴你

And that's why this was a little bit weird.

所以這就是為何我覺得有點奇怪

The only thing I can really say is what I have been building up to for the past five minutes
