  • Hello world, if you spend time with my kids you'll quickly clue in that they love cats.

  • They have stuffed cats, electronic cats,

  • Cat ears, cat toys, cat everything.

  • Whenever we see stray cats around Japan, the kids always try to play with them.

  • Unfortunately, we don't have cats in our family

  • However on our trip back to Canada this year, we heard about the catfé and it was a given that we had to visit

  • twice

  • The catfé, by the way, is the blending of the word cat in café

  • CATFÉ, get it? catfé.

  • The real unique thing about this concept, though

  • is that all the cats are shelter cats, cats that don't have homes.

  • Every single cat that you can visit is also available for adoption

  • Well, kind of.

  • Adoption is so popular. Unless you get there on a transfer day. Which is Thursday.

  • It's more than likely that the cat you're visiting with will have already found a home. Which is a great thing!

  • To learn more about what's being done to help unwanted cats in our province of British, Columbia in Canada

  • We visited our local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

  • This is how to meet cats that don't know you

  • First you need to wash your hands

  • What is this?

  • It's just the soap that we use with SPCA to make sure that

  • You gotta make sure that we don't give any cats any colds and other cats could have or any sort of germs

  • We then got to see the cats

  • -So you guys know how to introduce yourselves to animal? -No.

  • -what am I gonna do? I'm gonna let them... -Sniff

  • Yeah, so we're just sniff my hand and

  • My smell is his way of knowing who I am that's how he's gonna recognize me.

  • Well, It's one of the ways.

  • If we use a fist then if an animal want to bite us

  • There's nothing really to bite onto.

  • If you put your fingers out, There's something to bite onto.

  • when you want to play with cats, show your fists.

  • So they can safely sniff.

  • Try not to make eye contact at first

  • because eye contact can make cats feel really nervous, okay?

  • New cats don't like it if you looked in their eyes

  • Here you go, see here you go, nice!

  • Good job, Shin.

  • Warned huh? Well, Shin, Shin, be careful, be careful.

  • I think he likes your fluffy and you're next to the scratching post.

  • -So, Shin, are you okay? -Yeah.

  • So when a cat's doing something like eating or scratching or playing

  • That's very close to doing something else that

  • could be dangerous to you, so it's probably not a good time to try to pet them okay

  • Shin found that you don't pet cats when they're eating scratching or playing.

  • -And are you okay Shin? -No.

  • So what you did you learned? Shin?

  • Nothing

  • Nothing?

  • Nothing Nothing Nothing

  • We asked Alex about how to help cats with no homes.

  • do you guys know how long average cat lives usually?

  • So about two to five years on average.

  • How long do you think an indoor cat lives for?

  • -It's longer than... -20

  • That's a pretty cool. 17 years is the average

  • indoor cats live longer than outdoor cats because they're safe in their homes,

  • So, outdoor cats live less than indoor cats because they get scratched by raccoons or hit by cars

  • If you want to take a cat outdoors, you can use a leash or a harness to take them outside

  • Okay, so come over this side.

  • I wanted to know what to do if you find a stray cat.

  • we don't think that you should...

  • give food or support a homeless cat at first,

  • the first thing you need to do is try to find the owner and get the cat back to the owner

  • because otherwise the cat will become uncomfortable and won't stay there for food and will live out in the

  • Out in the streets, and it could be very dangerous

  • So I said to Alex what happens if you lost a cat

  • So we always recommend that you have two

  • types of ID so you have your collar and you either have a microchip or attached to your pet.

  • A good thing about a collar is you can read it easily, but it comes off easily.

  • So you want a microchip so you can scan the cat and you will know who's cat it is

  • So I wanted to know why some cats missing some parts of their ear

  • So if you spay a female animal they can't have babies anymore

  • And if you neuter a boy animal then it can't make babies anymore either

  • so you always want to spay and neuter your pets so that they don't have a bunch of babies and

  • and all of a sudden you have to come into the BC SPCA and say I've got all these puppies here

  • and I don't know what to do with them, and you have to give them away.

  • So, I think if there's a cat that doesn't live in a home and it has nowhere to go to.

  • We try to spay and neuter it and put it back into the neighborhood

  • But we have to know that we already saw that cat.

  • So sometimes they mark cats to show that what we've already seen this cat

  • We know It's spayed and neutered. We don't have to worry anymore about it

  • hum... having babies

  • When you cut a cat's ear, it's called ear tipping, and it doesn't hurt the cat

  • Here are five things you can do to help cats have homes.

  • If you find a stray cat, don't feed it right away.

  • Instead, trying to find the owner or call an animal shelter.

  • Try to keep your cat indoor, so they can live a long happy life

  • Spay or neuter your cats so that there won't be kittens without homes

  • Make sure you have a microchip and a collar so you can find it home again if they get lost

  • When you adopt a cat, make sure that you give the cat a home forever

  • because they can live for 20 years

  • Thanks for watching. See you next time, bye

  • How do you help homeless cats where you're from?
