So what does tonkatsu mean
Tom means Pig and cutsu the it's short for the English word cutlet Katsuletsu
This actually comes from the French word cutlet which means meat chop. So tonkatsu literally means pork chop
Back in the late 1800s. The practice of cooking cutlets came to Japan from Europe. And what is Western food called in Japan?
Yo Shoku, yo means Western
