Hi! Welcome to a one minute teaching tip about getting students to highlight their text efficiently.

Often at the beginning of the terms, teachers tell students that they need to highlight their text,

however, what students generally do is something like this:

It might be worth your while to take a couple of minutes at the beginning of the term

to show students how to highlight the text that they're going to be reading that term.

For example, you might want to demonstrate color coding.

Show the students that when they see a key concept to highlight it in blue.

Then when they see an example or an explanation, they might want to highlight it in yellow.

When they transitional words they may want to highlight those in green.

Now when students are preparing for an exam, all they need to do is look at the color coding.

They see key points are yellow; those are really important.

And the relationship between key points and ideas are highlighted as transitions.
