How you doing everybody welcome I'm in Kochi Prefecture this is Tosa Yamada station I just got off of a train that looked like Anpaman and I'm gonna be staying here for the night this is a Astro V a streamed movie and the place that I'm staying at is a little bit creepy so I've heard that creepy in a bad way just it's an old place it's an old building that's has some character to it and I think that's what's gonna make this really unique now this station has very few people there's a 7-eleven and then here's the main street Wow this is completely different than Tokyo this station Tosa Yamada is also famous for Anpaman so you'll see some things I guess the train that I'm on is also representative of this town all right let's go to this Airbnb now they said as soon as I got out of the station to take a hard left so I guess it'd be this way I brought with me a light just in case I think it'll help me find my way in there it's a light so let's make sure we get lit up here follow me already I can see some really old houses check that out all right it's not that far of a walk maybe like two minutes all right there you go so I'm lit up now all of the towns when you get so far away from city centers they are like this it's very regional no interesting manhole covers though one of the things I always check out sometimes the only light emitted in these small towns are from the vending machines Pepsi choice of a new generation I think that was a generation ago how's that generation do it all right we're getting close this is an Airbnb I'll put a link in the description if you're interested in this house this house has a really long history I've been told and that's part of the things I look for in an Airbnb rental is there history there apparently the answer is yes with this house makes it makes it very special okay I think I think that's that's it right up there whoa look at that alley that Street there's not much down there that the streets so narrow and quiet oh it's right there okay it's right here whoa okay this does look really old this is the entrance I guess we kind of go in here looks like a garden but you can see the house there lights are off let's kind of kind of go inside here all right I guess there must be another door right here it's hard to know it's hard to know which door to go into so this one this door looks no this isn't the right door doesn't open up all the way there's no key there's no place to put the key in there wow this is so dark I hope I remembered the key I hear this oh that would that would be really rough okay oh okay oh good looks as though some alcohol to spray our hands and you can see this shoji paper doors here take off our shoes you always have to take off your shoes at the Gen Con and Japanese houses all right you can see there's no handle here to open the doors and this in these cases you look for anything other than the door that itself to open and then it'd be down here so slide that open here we go whoa that is a lot of space in there this is way bigger than I thought it was gonna be I don't see any light switches Wow check this out so this house goes all the way back I believe to the Meiji era or even beyond that oh that I think hold on a second so they gave me they gave me some of the history that I wrote down here here it says this is registered as a tangible cultural property which is pretty incredible that you can rent something like this this first built in the late Meiji era Meiji era if you don't know is 1868 to 1912 this is an in originally built in Nangoku City let's go into this room that is that is weird because Nangoku City is a totally different place this is Tosa Tosa so they actually physically moved the entire structure of this house apparently that's that's crazy the person who lived in this house was the doctor for the Yamanouchi family of the Tosa-ban which are the lords of Tosa the same lords who took who had coach castle built that's really interesting okay this is the door that we couldn't get into so the the lords who built coach castle also built this house I've been told that these wooden things you see the wooden carvings here are also very very unique and go original part of this house and you'll see some ume blossoms and I don't know what that is dragons interesting ume blossoms and dragons whoa there's no knob to turn it there's no knob here's another room here this is really kind of creepy I've been told that the ceilings in the Meiji era didn't go this high this happened as a renovation probably during the the Taisho era which is after Meiji okay look at this room here again if we go up here you can see the beautifully carved wooden I don't know what you would call these but just above the doorframe the original part of the structure building ume blossoms I guess it's a sign of longevity or happy life there's a bird up there interesting Wow also these paper doors here shoji doors have glass in them so I don't think that that's original but you can see the tatami mats and oh look up here I'm always afraid to open these things because you might let out some evil spirits or something up here okay that's a little shrine for the house gods I suppose the spirits of the house get the name of the name of it there's so many aspects of Japanese houses and the older ones let's keep going inside here for a little bit there's lots of rooms okay I'm glad that there's a heater at least find a place to plug it in here's a small room here I don't know if there are any ghosts here I have not heard of any stories of anything like that here okay so this is interesting on the floor here of this tatami room you can see there's a cutout in the middle of it this extra lining on the tatami it opens up into an Irori which is a fireplace and you can do tea ceremony here I believe that's kind of neat to see and these little cutouts inside of the house also this is where you probably put your important stuff things that you would treasure and this tapestry in the back it would change I believe seasonally so winter spring summer fall you might have a different saying here I don't know exactly what trying to say in that one hopefully it's not some sort of curse or spell for the person who stays here these lights always in these old Japanese homes you'll find interesting lights this one has a washi paper which is very famous in the Kochi area look at that really nice so I guess when you turn it on it gives a very nice light I'll turn it on later I'm kind of I'm kind of liking this vibe it's kind of kind of creepy it's like a moment from The Shining these long corridors okay this says Oterai which is the toilet see here look at that so after after this house was built in the late Meiji era and it was moved physically the entire structure somehow they moved it from Nankoku to here and Tosa Yamada and it's been here since then and and over the years this has been turned into oh there's another creepy corridor over the years this has been turned into a youth hostel I heard at the at the beginning of the Heisei period so in the early 90s this was a youth hostel I don't know why they stopped making this a youth hostel I wonder if there is a story there if there is I don't want to know it keep your spooky ghost stuff to yourself should have brought friends with me stay here but it does look well well maintained all right I'm so it said Oterai this way so the toilet huh the train going by this is a really nice sink and after it had been a youth hostel there were a couple of years where this house was not used much at all and then a company a ceramics company took over and really did a good job restoring it there's a mirror mirror mirror on the wall who's the fairest of them all you John you you're the fairest of them all all right here's you can see the ceramic company has added in their ceramics which is pretty nice oh and there's some onsen bath salts pretty nice so this this must be the bath okay let's open this up here smells like Hinoki the Japanese cedar it's got Hinoki all over the all over the walls and even the ceiling so you can make a bath in here and I guess if you leave the bath the steam will go up to the top and then the drops will will start to fall on your head so you have to put a towel on your head to keep from doing that very well well done good wood finishing I love that Hinoki smell that traditional Japanese wood that they use Japanese cedar I still have not found the toilet though still me I think I heard something they say old houses Creek I heard a Creek Oh Tadai all right there's an arrow here I'm guessing this door slides no it doesn't slide how do you oh oh there's sort of like this ninja looking switch here so this this wood panel opens and closes it so oh oh it doesn't slide it swings out so oh you can see the locking mechanism here check it out so simple I thought it was it would slide open just pull it open it's kind of like a ninja door you can't really see that interesting whoa so bathroom slippers that's usual I like these little teeny hand sinks and then they've done an amazing job with the ceramics the look at that this looks this might be the toilet toilet that I've seen in ages look at this the the work on this tank of course this is something that's that's that's quite new even the bottom the base of the toilet looks really nice I've never have you ever seen a toilet like this I don't know I think I could spend some time here even the electrical socket on the back there is has a ceramic to it so there's a really great job renovating it including this this authentic looking Taisho period light and then up here I just noticed this I just noticed this up here along the roof along the roof is some these electrical wires so I know that the wiring does work it's got to work just got to find the switches I think I hear something so apparently have collected quite a bit of things here that was me there's a crack in the door they'd be pretty creepy if we saw eyes sharing shining back at us this is an uncomfortable smile I don't we wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait that doesn't seem right that doesn't seem right something something moves that I got nowhere else to stay this is the only place I can't it's the only place the only place and I could swear that this was not this was not there this was here I can't imagine if I guess I'm imagining anything okay here it is there's that okay hold on all right oh I like that light all right that's too that's too creepy all right let's just turn the lights I don't know I don't know that that was there wasn't it that was there right that's not me that's that's that's that's not just me right I that was there just turn on all the lights switches I saw what's going in here that's creepy only that goes on all the lights all right I don't I don't I don't I don't I don't remember don't remember that being there all right I'm just going to put this back Oh everything's gonna be alright this is now a designated cultural historical property I think it's gonna be alright just turn on all the lights full blast a little bit better I'm pretty sure that was on the table Oh another space here okay I think everything's gonna be alright all right so this this really nice place is you can get this on Airbnb I'll put a link in the description but I think yeah I think it's a really cool experience to spend the night at a place that is really let's get some history to it but more than that I think when you do get out into Japan you've seen a lot of the sites already getting off of the beaten path and finding a place like this that has this kind of history yeah maybe you see things it's not yeah but I you know what this has really good reviews and everybody said that this is really great and I think this is I might be the second or the third or fourth person so there aren't that many reviews but it was really I mean highly recommended to me and the people who rented this out were extremely friendly they really wanted me to come here so I was I thought this is a great great place again I'll put the link in the description you're definitely gonna want to check it out yeah this is in Tosa Yamada which is not that far away from from Kochi on the train you saw I came here by the Ampaman train which is pretty neat I'll put a little I think I took some video of it before it left so I'll put that in here as well and I hope I get some really good sleep tonight but yeah don't worry about it this place is not haunted it's just you know it's just what it is scary but it's not it's nice historical places are always a little bit you know different let's leave your comments below let me know what you think and yeah I mean if you're if you're interested in staying in this place I'm sure it'll be available on Airbnb and you can just follow and in my footsteps noise from outside when you just sleep in a place like this there's lots of things that you should also know about so the last thing I'll leave you with is the last thing I'll leave you with is behind here I believe the futon and things like that are in the back there so you just set it up basically all of these rooms you can stay in just push push the tables to the side and you can make space for it a lot of these things are known to Japanese these doors these shoji paper doors they also they also will open up and you can make bigger rooms out of it so if you have a big family you can use all three of these rooms and make just one big room or if you have like a teenage kid that is very troublesome and you can give him his own room just put him in that room in the back because that looks maybe the It looks pretty clean. Again, it's share stuff, so the kitchens might get nasty on certain days depending on who's actually there. That's been my experience with shared places but it's like $30 a night and then this is Little Japan, which is another youth hostel place, almost capsules, which is fine. That's your sleeping quarters and then you have share spaces with everybody
