To get a better sense of the world Thompson was living in, in a TV interview he and a Hells Angels member did with CBC, the audience laughed as the Hells Angels member made jokes about the other member beating his wife and dog, while Thompson was essentially made a mockery of for caring and stepping in. Though, at this time, racism, sexism, violence, hatred, and corruption were the norm, they were rubbing up against an expanding moral consciousness carried out by countercultural movements like the 60s hippie movement. There were growing efforts, hopes, and promises of greater peace, acceptance, and societal function.
