- And that is collapsing now. That is collapsing. And that part of what distinguishes the human is that we can ask the question what it means to be human. That's a level of self-consciousness and self-reflectivity, I think, that is important. So it's that level of self-reflexivity that I see as, in some ways, distinctive of the human. So what you're saying is we have come to think of human consciousness as something special, something distinct, something almost separate from nature, as though we are outside of the natural world, looking down at it, trying to make sense of it. Correct. I mean, that begins in the Bible in certain ways. I mean, I think there's a philosophical foundation to the Anthropocene. And I think, in many ways, that philosophical foundation begins with modern philosophy, which begins with Descartes. And Descartes, as everybody knows, said, I think therefore I am. And what Descartes does is to identify human being with thinking, and everything else is a machine, including the human body. From that point on, there's always this effort to distinguish the human from the non-human. And that can be the animal, that can be the plant. And philosophers all the way down to Heidegger will distinguish the human in certain ways. For Heidegger, the distinction of the human is the awareness of death. He says, animals expire, humans die. Dying is knowing there is such a thing as death.
