終極問題:為什麼長得好看的人常常是個混蛋? (Are Good Looking People Jerks?)
Intro
Hi, VoiceTubers! How are you today? This is Mia. Have you had an idea that sometimes you feel like good-looking people are just not “look like” reliable? I don’t, but I’ve heard some of my friends telling me words like that. I don’t know why would have these kinds of thoughts. It’s like a bias I guess. We’ll go back to this topic at the end of today’s episode. Now, let’s see today’s sentence.

Sentence
While browsing the latest dating app, have you ever stopped and wondered "Why are so many of the good-looking people jerks?"

Pronunciation Tips
1.Latest: /ˈleɪ.t̬ɪst/. Notice the “t” in the middle is a flap t, which sounds like a slight /d/ sound. So it’s /ˈleɪ.t̬ɪst/, not /ˈleɪ.tɪst/.
2.Stopped: Because the end of the word “stop” is /p/ sound, and /p/ sound is a voiceless sound. When we wanna add “ed,” which means past tense, after a voiceless sound, the /d/ sound would sound like /t/
3."Why are so many of the good-looking people jerks?": In English, when we ask a question, sometimes we raise our intonation at the end of the sentence. But we usually use the raising one for a “yes/no” question, for example, “ Do you like skiing?”, or to show disbelief or anger, for example, “ I don’t know how you can talk to me like that?”
While aside from the rising one, there is also the falling one, like our sentence here, "Why are so many of the good-looking people jerks?" This one is usually used for questions that are not yes or no questions. For example, you would say “When do you study?” (falling) Instead of, “When do you study?” (rising) That’s because native speakers think the most important part of such sentences is in the beginning, like when, where, hoe, so we put more stress here.

Vocabulary
1.Browse (v) 流覽KK[braʊz] IPA /braʊz/
Def: to look through a book or magazine without reading everything, or to walk around a shop looking at several things without intending to buy any of them
I'm just browsing around.
我只是隨意看看。

2.Good-looking (adj) 好看的 KK [ˋgʊdˋlʊkɪŋ]IPA /ˌɡʊdˈlʊk.ɪŋ/
Def: A good-looking man or woman is physically attractive.
She runs after every good-looking man she meets.
她會追求她遇到的每一個好看的男人。

3.Jerk (n) 混蛋 KK[dʒɝk] IPA /dʒɝːk/
Def: a stupid person or a person who is not well-liked or who treats other people badly
She called her ex-boyfriend a jerk because he cheated on her when they still dated each other.
她說她的前男友是個混蛋,因為他們還在約會時,他就出軌了。
Outro
I don’t think we should judge people by their appearance, while sometimes we probably unconsciously do so. And as for why we tend to think good-looking people are jerks, according to the video, which is quite straightforward, is because in the very beginning when you meet someone, you would totally ignore ugly jerks! The video directly points out why we think that way, if you are interested, you can check it out. But anyway, I think a clear or absolute definition of ugly and good-looking does not exist. What I’m sure is that, if you’re a jerk, then people would all deem you are ugly. This is the end of today’s pronunciation challenge. I am Mia. See you next time.
