Intro:
Welcome back VoiceTubers! This is your Monday host, Jenny! Believe it or not, cyberbullying has surpassed bullying as the most common type of harassment people encounter in this modern age, especially for the kids in middle school and high school. Cyberbullying is the use of mobile phones, instant messaging, e-mails, chat rooms or social networking sites such as Facebook and Instagram to harass, threaten or intimidate someone.
Have you ever been a victim of cyberbullying? Too often these cyber bullies feel anonymous and hidden behind their digital screens and don’t take responsibility for their hate speech and rumour spreading and emotional bullying. Teachers and school authorities sometimes cannot address these problems immediately because most of the time cyberbullying happens after school hours. However, cyberbullying often continues during school hours as students whisper and gossip to each other about what they’ve seen online. We can come back and discuss more on this topic after we go over our pronunciation challenge. Let’s take a look at our featured sentence now.

Sentence:
People who experienced harassment at any age experienced worse mental and physical health later in life, plus increased depressive symptoms and lower self-worth.

Pronunciation Tips:
harassment - stress is on the second syllable. The first a is a short uh sound and the second a is a long flat eh sound.
physical - has three syllables. Sounds like fi-si-cal.
later in life - connect later + in.
increased - adj and verb form pronunciation are different
symptoms - the letter y has the I vowel sound. The second syllable is short and unstressed and the letter o has the uh sound. It’s pronounced like simp-tims.

Here is the sentence one more time.

Now let’s take a look at our vocabulary words.

Vocab:
harassment (n.) KK[ˋhærəsmənt] IPA /həˈræs.mənt/
騷擾行爲 behaviour that annoys or upsets someone
常見用法:sexual harassment 性騷擾

Example: Sexual harassment is the most common type of workplace harassment.
性騷擾是最常見的工作場所騷擾類型。

physical KK[ˋfɪzɪk!] IPA/ˈfɪz.ɪ.kəl/
(adj.) 身體的,肉體的 relating to the body
(n.) 體格檢查,體檢 an examination of a person's body by a doctor in order to discover if that person is healthy, sometimes done before a person can be accepted for a particular job

Example: A good relationship is based on more than just physical attraction.
良好的關係不僅僅基於身體上的吸引力。

self-worth (n.)
自我價值 the value you give to your life and achievements

Example: It’s best not to link your sense of self-worth to the opinions of others.
最好不要將你的自我價值感建立於他人給你的意見。

Outro:

Cyberbullying is a growing problem, especially with kids now having so much access to the internet these days. We should address this problem seriously and teach kids about digital etiquette. We should respect other people’s privacy by not sharing personal information, photos, or videos that the other person may not want to be published online. Show good sportsmanship when playing online games, whether you win or lose. Be nice to one another!

Here are a couple of things you can do if you witness online bullying. First, you can avoid commenting, liking, or reposting anything that hurts another person. Second, if you feel brave and confident enough to stand up for the victims, you can also comment and encourage people to stop the harassment.

If unfortunately, you are being cyberbullied, remember to protect yourself by taking lots of screenshots, especially of the disappearing snaps and story posts which are only available for a limited time. It’s best to collect evidence, so the bully cannot get away with it if you report him.

This brings me to the end of the episode. Watch the video to learn more about cyberbullying and remember to record your challenge sentence before you go, alright? Thanks for listening and I’ll see you again next week!
