Hey, what’s up Voicetube listeners or should I say wagwan? What does that mean? Well, if you’re from Toronto, you’ll know! Oh wait, isn’t it Trono?! All these terms, what do they mean?! Well, let me introduce myself first. The name’s Hugh and I’ll be your host for today’s Pronunciation Challenge. If you listeners don’t know, I am Canadian and I was born and raised in Toronto. However, I said Trono earlier, didn’t I? Well, if you’re from Toronto, you actually get lazy and just say Torono. For the lazier ones, they turn this city name into two syllables and just say Trono! What about wagwan? It means, “What’s going on?”. Where does this come from?! Let’s get to the featured sentence first before finding out!

Today’s featured sentence:

For the first word, we have
clients
Two syllables.
“CLI” has a long i sound and “ENTS” sounds more like it’s spelt “ENZ”. Clients.

Next up, we have
complete
Two syllables
“COM” has a short U sound. For “PLETE”, let’s refer to something I like to call “Magic E”! When there is an E at the end of a word, the vowel before that becomes the long sound of whatever vowel it corresponds to. In this case, the vowel before E is another E so we just say E. Confused? Here, let me just say it for you. Complete. Not complete.

Lastly, we have,
Mission
Two syllables.
“MI” has a short i sound. “SSION” if spelt out like how it should sound, would be “S H U N”. Mission.


Moving onto Vocabulary!

The first word is:

Definition
a customer or someone who receives services
Used in a sentence you could say,

Used in a sentence, you could say:
“You complete me.” is the sweetest thing I’ve ever heard.

And lastly,
3. Mission

an important job, especially a military one, that someone is sent somewhere to do
Used in a sentence, you could say:
Have you ever watched Mission Impossible?

So, a lot of the slang from Toronto actually comes from Jamaican Patois, an English-based creole language. It is from a time when most Jamaican ancestors were taken from their homeland, and forced to speak English. There’s a lot of history with the way they speak in Toronto. You won’t hear it anywhere else! If you travel further east from Toronto to the very edge, you’ll hit Newfoundland. They have an accent that is hard to understand for anyone that’s not from there. It’s called Newfinese. Languages! They’re great, aren’t they?
Oh, I haven’t even mentioned the movie that was in this trailer. Kevin Hart starring in a movie with the name of the city I grew up in is enough to get me excited. Then again, I’m a big fan of Kevin Hart and find him quite inspiring!
