Hi, guys, I am super excited to be talking about Indian curry this week! I absolutely LOVE Indian food. Perhaps most of you are more familiar with the Japanese style curry, but I’ve gotta say, authentic Indian curry is by far much more flavourful because of the amazing spices they use in their ingredients. The spice blend that is most commonly used in an Indian curry is called garam masala, and it’s a combination of cinnamon, mace, peppercorns, coriander seeds, cumin seeds, and cardamom pods, all toasted in a pan to release their aromatic flavours, then grounded into a powder. Turmeric is also a primary ingredient in a lot of curry powders. Not only tasty, it’s super healthy as well!

In the 1700s, thousands of British traders lived in India and hired Indian cooks and servants. When they returned to Britain, they brought their new love of Indian food back with them. However, it only started out as an acquired taste as the Indian spices were not so popular with most British palates. Indian restaurants started popping up in England in the 19th century, catering for the Asian seamen and students. Boom time of Indian curry began in the 1970s, after many Bangladeshis fled to Britain after the civil war in Bangladesh. A lot of restaurants adapted their menus for the working-class customers and curry in its 1970s form was cheap and cheerful, adapted to British tastes (often a little more sweet). In the more recent decades, the flavours have changed back to the more authentic Indian flavours and the UK is now famously known for its love of all things curry! Currently, there are estimated to be around 12,000 Indian restaurants in the UK! So next time you’re there, apart from fish and chips and roast dinners, make sure you go try some Indian curry as well!
