Every season can be allergy season, depending on what you're allergic to. -- Clara Chung

Ahchoo! Excuse me, my allergies are acting up again! How can we fight off our allergies? Listen on to find out! Hi everyone, my name is Hubert or Hugh, whichever is easier and today I’m here presenting a video about allergies! I’ve talked about many things on the Pronunciation Challenge before but today’s episode seems very personal to me. Why? Well, I’ve had horrible allergies ever since I was a kid and it’s only been a couple of years since they have gotten better. Before that, I would always have a stuffy nose and I would breathe through my mouth at all times. Do you know “mouth breather” is actually a slang term for a really dumb person? Breathing through your nose has also been scientifically proven to be healthier as well! Let’s get to the featured sentence first before I tell you guys what I did to get over my allergies! Who knows, maybe it can work for you.

Today’s featured sentence:
Many people will need medication, but there are other ways to reduce your symptoms, says allergy specialist Dr. Karen Binkley.

I’ll say that again.

Many people will need medication, but there are other ways to reduce your symptoms, says allergy specialist Dr. Karen Binkley.

Ok, now time for the Pronunciation Tips.

For the first word, we have
reduce
Two syllables.
The first syllable “re” has a short U sound and the second syllable “duce” sounds like “juice” but with a D in front instead of the J sound. Reduce.

Next up, we have
symptom
Two syllables
Don’t let the spelling throw you off for this one. It’s actually quite simple. “Sym” sounds like sim like a sim card you use for your phone.”TOM” has a short U sound and sounds like the medication for upset stomachs, Tums. Symptom.

Lastly, we have,
specialist
Three syllables.
“Spe” has a short E sound. “Cia” if spelt out like how it should sound would be something like, “shuh” which has a short U sound. “List” is like the list you make when you go grocery shopping. Specialist.

Moving onto Vocabulary!

The first word is:
1. reduce
Definition
to become or to make something become smaller in size, amount, degree, importance, etc.
Used in a sentence you could say,
“Taiwan has found a great system to reduce waste.”

Next word,
2. symptom
Definition
any feeling of illness or physical or mental change that is caused by a particular disease
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“One symptom of anxiety would be the feeling of nervousness.”

And lastly,
3. specialist
Definition:
someone who has a lot of experience, knowledge, or skill in a particular subject
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“You should consider a specialist for those headaches you always get.”

Did you guys pay attention to the lady when she mentioned the salt water rinse? This is what I started doing and it has worked wonders for me! When my allergies were really bad back then, I would rinse my nose with salt water at least a few times a day. I also had to train myself to breathe through my nose again. Another way I fought off my allergies was to clean up my place! I’m super allergic to dust so I try to keep my place simple and clean. I hate dusting but it’s definitely better than having a stuffy nose. Of course, I’m no doctor and everyone is different so don’t take my word for it. You should see a doctor and see what they say first!
Alright people, time to get your recordings in if you haven’t done so already. It’s been super busy for me lately with auditions so wish me luck! Hopefully, I get something big! Until the next episode, see ya!

Listen on to find out! Hi everyone, my name is Hubert or Hugh, whichever is easier and today I’m here presenting a video about allergies! Well, I’ve had horrible allergies ever since I was a kid and it’s only been a couple of years since they have gotten better. Before that, I would always have a *stuffy nose(鼻塞) and I would breathe through my mouth at all times. Do you know “mouth breather(愚蠢的人)” is actually a slang term for a really dumb(愚笨的) person? Breathing through your nose has also been scientifically proven(prove過去分詞) to be healthier as well! Let’s get to the featured sentence first before I tell you guys what I did to get over my allergies! Who knows, maybe it can work for you.
