Hi, listeners! Welcome back to Pronunciation Challenge with me, your host, Jenny! Before we talk about the history of marriage, what does marriage mean to you? If you are one of our listeners who’s been married for quite some time already, has your perception of marriage changed since you first got married?
It’s interesting to know that the history of marriage dates back thousands of years, and usually, the marrying couple had no say in who they were going to marry. Because back then, families would use marriages as a way to form an alliance between other families. Typically planned by the parents, nowadays it is still estimated that over half of the marriages worldwide are arranged. The Indian community contributes to a large percentage of this kind of union where around 90 percent of marriages are arranged. Here are some surprising statistics – in the U.S., the divorce rate hovers around 40~50 percent. Within this percentage, the divorce rate for arranged marriages is only 4 percent.
Sadly, some brides as young as under 15 years of age, are often forced into marriage situations in some countries such as Niger and India. I do feel bad for these child brides that get trapped in this type of arrangement.
Watch our video of the day and find out about the history of marriage but now, let’s take a moment and go over our key sentence :

Outro
However, in a more modern take on this traditional practice – in my view, an arranged marriage isn’t always as bad as you may think. You basically go over and evaluate all the practical issues first and if most things check out, you then see if there’s any attraction and move on from there. A lot of relationships these days start out with a lot of left-swipes on dating apps anyway! See, the process of eliminating from a pool of candidates, narrowing it down to a few that best match your ideal requirements, is not a bad place to start at all! Some people these days even prefer that their parents do all the legwork for them first, accepting help from them in choosing potential partners then they get to have the final say.
We may all have different ideas about marriage. Some of us marry for love! Some people marry because they want to have children and form a family. Some people even get married solely for convenience, such as a political marriage. No matter what, I think we should respect other people’s decisions as they have found a mutual match for themselves. We should also respect those that don’t want to get married at all and stop pestering them about it! Should we agree on that? Let me know what you think, leave a comment underneath my recording transcript, and don’t forget to record your sentence of the day. Thanks for listening guys and bye-bye for now!
