That quote just now is a very famous quote from Star Trek! Are any of you listeners Star Trek fans? I actually have a friend on the new Star Trek TV series right now. His name is Patrick Kwok-Choon and he’s fantastic in this show. Oh, how rude of me, I haven’t introduced myself yet. My name is Hubert and I’ll be your host for today’s episode of the Pronunciation Challenge.
Just to clarify, I’m not presenting a Star Trek episode today! I am, however, presenting a video about aliens! To be more specific, we’re talking about ancient aliens! What does ancient mean? Ancient means something belonging to a distant past and doesn’t exist anymore. Ancient aliens is a theory that aliens built some of the most sophisticated structures on our planet like the pyramids of Giza! These scientists argue that it wouldn’t be possible for regular humans to even have the technology to build these structures today. So their theory is that ancient aliens were responsible for building them in ancient times. Let’s get to the featured sentence first and come back to me so we can talk about this some more!

For the first word, we have

Four syllables.
“A” has a long A sound. “VI” has a long E sound. “A” again, has a long A sound and “TOR” has your typical “ER” ending sound. Aviator.

Next up, we have
lieutenant
Three syllables
“Lieu” has a double O sound like, pool, fool. “Lieu”. “Ten” sounds exactly like the number ten. “Nant” sounds like “mint” but with an “N” in front instead.

Lastly, we have,
equipped
Two syllables.
“E” sounds like something you’ll say when you don’t know what to say. “Uhhhh.” That’s it! “Quipped” actually has a T sound at the end and not the ED sound. Why? Well, here’s a quick phonetic lesson. When you have a soft sound like a P, K, F, Sh, at the end of the word, then you pronounce the ED sound with a T instead. Equipped.

I would even say that it might be arrogant (arrogant kind of means cocky or think you’re better than you actually are) to even think that we are the only planet that can sustain life. The universe is so big that I would argue that it’s impossible that there wouldn’t be another planet just like ours out there.
