Intro:
What’s up, VoiceTubers. Tera here for another episode. Today’s video brings us to a word that people usually don’t know its actual meaning, and that is "Irony". "Irony" is not only a literary device appearing in literature but also something that often exists in our everyday conversations. Consider the scenario in this video in which the man doubles over with laughter and says, "It's so ridiculous! So ironic!" when he sees someone face-plant into a cake. While people tend to say things are ironic when they find them funny or odd, little do people know that this is actually wrong. Check out this video and get an update on the true meaning of "Irony"! And today’s featured sentence is…
Featured sentence: Then, maybe there would have been a reasonable expectation that he would have been more skilled when carrying a ridiculously large cake.
Tips:
reasonable: four syllables with the stress on the first one. The vowel in "ea" is a long /i/, "rea". "son" is composed of the fricative /z/ and the nasal /n/, it’s pretty much like putting /z/ and /n/ directly together. "na" is a schwa sound, and lastly, "ble" is "b!". Again, "rea-son-able".
expectation: four syllables with the stress on the third one. "ex" is "x". "pec" is like "bec" since "ex" has a final /s/ sound, so it is "ex-pec". And then, "ta" is a long vowel /te/. Adding up "tion", which is /ʃən/, making it "ex-pec-ta-tion".
ridiculously: this one is a long one. Five syllables with the stress on the second one. The vowel in "ri" is a short /ɪ/. The vowel in "di" is a short /ɪ/ as well. "cu" is "Q", and "lous" is /ləs/. Put the final "ly" /li/ in the end, make it "ri-di-cu-lous-ly".
Vocab:
reasonable (adj.) KK [ˋriznəb!] IPA /ˈriː.zən.ə.bəl/
def: acceptable
合理的;可接受的
The boss thinks Kevin’s excuse for requesting a leave of absence is not reasonable。
老闆覺得 Kevin 請假的理由不合理。
expectation (n.) KK [ɛkspɛkˋteʃən] IPA /ˌek.spekˈteɪ.ʃən/
def: the feeling that good things are going to happen in the future
期望;預期的事物
The company has expectations of making a profit next year.
公司期望能夠在明年增加收益。
ridiculously (adv.) KK [rɪˋdɪkjələslɪ] IPA /rɪˈdɪk.jə.ləs.li/
荒謬地
def: in a way that is stupid or unreasonable and deserves to be laughed at
Laura hates papayas a lot, but she loves papaya milk, ridiculously.
Laura 非常討厭木瓜,但荒謬地,她喜歡木瓜牛奶。
Outro:
Is this video making sense to you? So, "Irony" is used when reality does not align with expectations. For example, if a person has been studying Chemistry for several years but he/she is not able to memorize the periodic table, we can say it is "ironic" because we expect them to have a deep understanding and broad knowledge of Chemistry. In addition, "Irony" can also bring out sarcastic effects. This happens, for example, when a customer says "Good job," to a waiter who has dropped his tray. Ok, so now you know what “Irony” is. Next time you see "Irony" is being misunderstood again, why not tell people its actual meaning and the correct ways to use it! Great, l think we can call it a day. Stay tuned, and please do press the recording button down below. See you.
