Good day, Voicetubers! Tera here. What comes to your mind when you think of networking? Is that a lot of people wearing formal clothing dancing and chatting with others? Or is it a bunch of people sitting in front of a dining table and trying hard to figure out common topics to talk about? Hmm, they are actually two of the ways networking takes place, but if you think that they are the only ways people can build their social network, then you’re probably wrong. You can start networking at any place at any time, sometimes it also comes out of your surprise. But why? Why do people put emphasis on social networking? Find the answer inside this video. After finishing the featured sentence, I’ll share one of my stories about social networking.
Featured sentence: During the last family get-together, didn't you hear that your aunt's friend studied lighting with a nature photographer on the West Coast?
Tips:
get-together: the final letter "t" in "get" and the first letter "t" in "together" will merge into one t sound. You don’t need to speak the /t/ twice. "Ge-together"
nature: the vowel in the first syllable is pronounced as "ay" but not /æ/. Kind reminder, when it becomes natural, then the vowel in the first syllable will be /æ/. "nature" and "natural":
photographer: four syllables with the stress on the second syllable. "Pho-to-gra-pher". Also, let me introduce its family members. ‘photo, ‘photograph, photo’graphic, and pho’tographer.
Vocab:
get-together (n.) KK [gɛt təˋgɛðɚ] IPA /ɡet təˈɡeð.ɚ/
def: an informal social gathering or meeting
聚會、會談
They met each other and fell in love during the get-together held last week.
他們在上週舉辦的聚會遇見彼此且相愛。
nature (n.) KK [ˋnetʃɚ] IPA /ˈneɪ.tʃɚ/
def: features and products of the earth, as opposed to humans or human creations
大自然
This international organization is dedicated to protecting nature.
這個國際組織致力於保護大自然。
photographer (n.) KK [fəˋtɑgrəfɚ] IPA /fəˈtɑː.ɡrə.fɚ/
攝影師
def: a person who takes photographs, especially as a job
When being asked what he wants to be in the future, Billy always answers "a photographer".
當被問起長大後想當什麼時,Billy 總是回答「一位攝影師」。
Outro:
I still remember one time when I was asked to write a research proposal without any professor’s help, I was super anxious because that was my very first time conducting research studies. I didn’t have much experience in reading papers, searching for valid and meaningful information that fitted my topics, not to mention crafting a whole research paper. I wanted to seek help, however, none of my best friends knew what formal research should be like. I talked to my family, but as you can imagine, they didn’t have experience in it, either. When I was wondering what I should do, Ruby came to my mind. She, as a graduate student, was one of my friend’s friends, and by meeting Ruby, I got to understand how research could be conducted. On the other hand, I contacted one of my former roommates, Kevin, for help, he later on introduced me to his friend Howard and Christy, who are working in the same area as mine. What’s more, Kevin also wanted me to meet Danny, who afterwards brought me and his friend, Fanny, together. Guess what, I ended up making friends with Fanny’s friend, Alan, who is now a PhD student in the States and has lots of publications! How powerful networking is! This is my story, what about yours? Share it with me down below with your recordings. Have a nice day.
