Hello Voicetubers, it’s me, Tera, from Voicetube again. Have any of you had the experience of having eye contact with someone else and immediately found it weird? Like, do you feel uncomfortable when making eye contact with your supervisor or boss? Do you feel some kind of chemistry is happening when you’re making eye contact with somebody you have a true feeling for? Well, I’m especially afraid of making eye contact with my mom when I do things that I think my mom probably won’t like or when I feel somehow guilty. Every time that happens, I am like "CRAP…I’m done…please don’t look at me…oh please" Funny huh? But this is a true story about me. Anyway, let’s go to the feature sentence first and then come back so that I can tell you more about eye contact in different cultures.

Sentence of the Day:
In a lot of Middle Eastern countries, eye contact, especially between a man and a woman, is considered inappropriate because it can be construed as romantic interest.

Pronunciation tips:
a lot of: there’s a linking between "lot" and "of", making it "lot-of", and also, we don’t pronounce the final letter f as /f/. Instead, we pronounce it as /v/.
especially: four syllables. "es-pe-cia-lly" , the “p” would sound like "b", and second, "cia" should be pronounced pretty much like "show".
inappropriate: five syllables. "in-a-ppro-pri-ate", with the stress on the third syllable. Besides, the third "a" in this word would be a minor schwa sound /ə/.
construe: two syllables with the stress on the latter on, "construe". The letter "t" following "s" will change its sound from /t/ to be more like "d". So, it would be "construe".

Though it seems most of the time eye contact brings more awkwardness than connection to life, it’s actually not true. Eye contact, which simply denotes one person looking directly at another person’s eyes, have strong implications in almost every culture, although these implications vary extensively across the globe. In the US and some countries in Western Europe, a person who makes eye contact with another person is thought to be confident and bold, whereas Middle Eastern cultures have strict rules regarding eye contact between sexes. A Japanese woman avoiding looking someone in the eyes means that she is being polite. As you can see, eye contact in different cultures can have a totally different meaning. So, next time when you’re meeting people with different cultures, remember to check those rules. You won’t want others to misunderstand you, nor do you want to get yourself in trouble!
