“You have power over your mind - not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.” - Marcus Aurelius

That was a powerful quote just now, wasn’t it? Hi, it’s Hubert again with Pronunciation Challenge and I present to you a video that I feel is very important for all of us right now. I’ve been listening to Marcus Aurelius a lot these days. Marcus Aurelius was a Roman emperor from 161 to 180 and a Stoic philosopher. Stoic means a person who can endure pain or hardship without showing their feelings or complaining. I’m not gonna lie, it’s been a tough year for myself and I’m sure it has been for everyone else during this pandemic. That is why I started looking into Marcus and his teachings on life. His words still ring true in this modern age. I would say, we all need to learn a thing or two from Marcus’s teachings. If you guys have the time, make sure you read his book, Meditations.
In the meantime, watch this video where we explore his teachings on how to stop caring about what others think about you! The video talks about how to be yourself wholeheartedly free from the opinions of others. Once you’re finished with that, come back to me for the featured sentence!

Today’s featured sentence:
“When we say, “I am a wife,” or “a mother,” or “a musician,” or “a lawyer,” we're taking one tiny sliver of our memory and identifying ourselves with it.”

I’ll say that again.

“When we say, “I am a wife,” or “a mother,” or “a musician,” or “a lawyer,” we're taking one tiny sliver of our memory and identifying ourselves with it.”

Ok, now time for the Pronunciation Tips.

First word.
Musician (myoo · zi · shen)
Three syllables.
“Mu” kind of sounds like the long “U” sound. “Zi” has a short “i” sound and “shn” sounds like the typical “t i e n” sound, “shun”. Musician.

Next word.
Lawyer (loy·ur)
Two syllables.
Ok, I chose this word because there’s a debate with a fellow Voicetube host and I. She says this word is pronounced “law-yer” I say it’s pronounced “loy-yer”. What do you guys think? Comment below and tell me which side you’re on! Ok, so I go with “Loy” like the word, “soy” but with an L in front. “Ur” is like any typical “e r” ending sound. Lawyer.

And our last one for pronunciation would be some blended words!
“Am a”. Don’t separate these two and instead, blend both words into what kind of sounds like the name “Anna” but with an “M” instead. “am a”.

Another one blended word would be,
“Sliver of”
Let the “r” roll into the word “of” to give you “rof”. Sliver of.

Moving onto Vocabulary!

The first word is:
1. Musician
Definition
someone who is skilled in playing music, usually as a job
Used in a sentence you could say,
“The concert features dancers and musicians of all nationalities."

Next word,
2. Sliver
Definition
a very small, thin piece of something, usually broken off something larger
Used in a sentence you could say,
“Just a sliver of cake for me, please - I shouldn't really be having any.”

And lastly,
3. Identify
Definition:
to recognize someone or something and say or prove who or what that person or thing is
Used in a sentence you can say:
“Even the smallest baby can identify its mother by her voice.”

Outro
Hopefully some of you take what you just watched to heart. If I’m being honest, I would say I’m still in the prison of other people’s opinion of me. The way we think is habitual and we can break that habit by instilling new practices such as Marcus’s philosophies. He gives us a great perspective on things. The things he says feels like things you’ve always known but didn’t know how to put into words. Hey, if you’re unhappy and feel like nobody understands you, maybe they don’t and who cares. Just do you and don’t get caught up with what others think of you. Trust me, they’re not thinking about you as much as you think they are. In fact, they probably aren’t thinking of you at all. Live your life. You do you.
Now, before you go, you know you owe me some recordings right? Get to it and even tell me your thoughts on Marcus Aurelius! I’d love to hear from you all! Alright, that about does it for me for today’s episode. See you next time!

☺When we say, “I am a wife,” or “a mother,” or “a musician,” or “a lawyer,” we're taking one tiny sliver of our memory and identifying ourselves with it.
(vi.&vt.) (使)成薄片;(使)裂成小片
■identify [aɪˋdɛntə͵faɪ] (vt.)認出、識別、鑑定[(+as)];發現、確定;視…(與…)為同一事物[(+with)];使參與、使合作[(+with)]
(vi.)identify with sb.認同(某人)、與(某人)產生共鳴、感同身受

ヾ(*゚▽゚)ノ每天要在各個角色中和平地切換,實屬不易
When we say, “I am a wife,” or “a mother,” or “a musician(/mjuːˈzɪʃ.ən/音樂家),” or “a lawyer(/ˈlɑː.jɚ/律師),” we're taking one tiny sliver(/ˈslɪv.ɚ/碎片n.) of our memory and identifying(/aɪˈden.t̬ə.faɪ/認同v.) ourselves with it.
當我們說「我是一個妻子」、「一個母親」、「一個音樂家」或「一個律師」時,我們同時在取出片段的回憶,並用它來認同自己。

“You have power over your mind - not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.” - Marcus Aurelius
是你,而非外在事件,對你的想法擁有主導權。了解這個道理,你將找到力量。

That was a powerful quote(引言n.) just now(剛才), wasn’t it? Hi, it’s Hubert again with Pronunciation Challenge and I present(呈現v.) to you a video that I feel is very important for all of us right now. I’ve been listening to Marcus Aurelius a lot these days. Marcus Aurelius was a Roman emperor(帝王) from 161 to 180 and a Stoic(/ˈstoʊ.ɪk/堅忍的,斯多葛學派的) philosopher(哲學家). Stoic means a person who can endure(忍受v.) pain or hardship(艱難) without showing their feelings or complaining. I’m not gonna lie(說謊v.), it’s been a tough year for myself and I’m sure it has been for everyone else during this pandemic. That is why I started looking into Marcus and his teachings(教學,學說n.) on life. His words(說詞n.) still *ring true(聽起來是真的) in this modern age. The video talks about how to be yourself wholeheartedly(/ˌhoʊlˈhɑːr.t̬ɪd.li/全心全意地) free from(擺脫...的) the opinions(想法) of others. ◆ ring true : (phr.) 聽起來是真的 If something someone says or writes rings true, it seems to be true.
Something about his explanation didn't quite ring true. 他的解釋聽起來有點不太真實。

1. musician /mjuːˈzɪʃ.ən/ n. 音樂家;樂師;作曲家 someone who is skilled in playing music, usually as a job:
The concert features(以…作為號召v.) dancers and musicians of all nationalities(/ˌnæʃ.ənˈæl.ə.t̬i/國籍). 這場音樂會雲集了各國的舞蹈家和音樂家。

Hopefully some of you take what you just watched to heart. If I’m being honest, I would say I’m still in the prison(囚禁n.) of other people’s opinion of me. The way we think is habitual(/həˈbɪtʃuəl/習慣性的) and we can break that habit by instilling(instil /ɪnˈstɪl/逐漸灌輸v.) new practices such as Marcus’s philosophies(哲學n.). He gives us a great perspective(觀點) on things. The things he says feels like things you’ve always known but didn’t know how to put into words. Hey, if you’re unhappy and feel like nobody understands you, maybe they don’t and who cares. Just do you(做你自己) and don’t *get caught up with(被...糾纏) what others think of you. Trust me, they’re not thinking about you as much as you think they are. In fact, they probably aren’t thinking of you at all. Live your life. You do you(你按照自己的意思做事). Now, before you go, you know you owe(欠v.) me some recordings right? Get to it and even tell me your thoughts on Marcus Aurelius! I’d love to hear from you all!
