Hello VoiceTubers! I’m Jonathan, back with another pronunciation challenge for you! In today’s video, we get a look at what would happen if suddenly the Earth had half the gravity it normally does. What do you think might happen? Could we all start breaking olympic records? Would a strong gust of wind blow us all away? Or maybe we could all dance the moonwalk just like Michael Jackson! The video gives some good examples, and I recommend you give it a watch! And now, let’s check out today’s featured sentence!

Sentence:
It changes depending on where we are in the universe since it's determined by how much gravity is acting upon us.
它會根據我們在宇宙中的地點而改變,體重是由重力作用在我們身上的大小來決定。

Pronunciation Tips:
Universe - long u, ‘er’ sound, s sound
Since it’s - words blend together
Gravity - short a, short i, long e
Is acting - words blend together

Vocabulary:
1. depend on (phr.) KK [dɪˋpɛnd] [ɑn] IPA /dɪˈpɛnd/ /ɑn/
需要;依賴 to need something, or need the help and support of someone or something, in order to live or continue as before

In this sentence, ‘depend on’ means to be controlled or determined by. Here’s an example sentence: “Which restaurant I choose will depend on what kind of food I want to eat.”

2. universe (n.) [ˋjunə͵vɝs] /ˈjunəˌvɜrs/
宇宙

“Universe” is described as everything that exists, especially all physical matter, including all the stars, planets, galaxies, etc. in space. I can give you two example sentences for this word. First, from a scientific perspective: “The universe is of a size and scope that humans cannot comprehend.” Also, in casual speech, we sometimes use the word ‘universe’ to create a hyperbolic effect. For example: “I think she’s the most beautiful girl in the universe!”

If you’re wondering what hyperbolic means, it means to exaggerate on purpose.

3. determine (v.) [dɪˋtɝmɪn] /dɪˈtɜrmən/
決定;影響

Our next word is determine, it’s a verb. It means to control or influence something directly, or to decide what will happen. Here’s an example sentence: “The race times will be added up, and the winner will be determined by who has the lowest total time.”

determined (adj.) [dɪˋtɝmɪnd] /dɪˈtɜrmənd/
下定決心的,堅決的

The next word, determined, which is used as an adj. means wanting to do something very much and not allowing anyone or any difficulties to stop you. Here is an example sentence: “Despite many setbacks, Edmund Hillary remained determined to climb Mt. Everest.”

And that brings us to the end of our pronunciation challenge. Now I want to hear from you! What would you do if suddenly the Earth had half its gravity? Personally, I’d congratulate myself for losing half my weight! And maybe I’d take up rock climbing, since it’d be way easier to pull myself up. Anyway, don’t forget to do your recording, and I’ll catch you next time!

☺It changes depending on where we are in the universe since it's determined by how much gravity is acting upon us.
體重會根據我們在宇宙中的地點而改變,因為體重是取決於地吸引力作用在我們身上的大小而定。
【心得】體重會變,但體型應該不太會變!?骨質密度會變小感覺挺恐怖的。
■depend on/upon sb/sth (ph.) 確信、信任;依靠、依賴;(能)相信某人/某事物可靠;視…而定、取決於…
■universe [ˋjunə͵vɝs] (n.C) 世界;領域;範圍
