Thescreams, theshoutsofmockingderisionandthestopping a featthatyouwillhearinthebackgroundofthisvideocamefromfaculty, staffandstudentsdemonstratorsinanorchestratedattempttodisruptthebusinessofthecollege.
It's thatnaturaltoeAmericansin a waythatit's notnaturaltoanybodyelseontheplanetwholivesoutsidethiscountry, andit's it's kindoflikewhenyoubegintothinkaboutitinthatway, I thinkaboutwhenyou'reconsciousofyourbreathing.
Ifsomethingtraumatichappens, Forexample, take a gondolatothetopoftheRockyMountainsandjumpout, as I didonetimeandrunupthesteps, andsuddenlyyoucan't breathe, yourheart's poundingandthenyou'reawareofyourbreaststryingtobreatheagain.
Andthatexperienceoffreedomfirsthappenedtomein 1988 whenmyfamilyand I traveledtoWestbutEastBerlin, EastBerlin, behindthewall.
And I cametounderstandwhatfreedommeantforMia's Americanbecause I couldexperienceitinside a communistcountry.
So I'vealwayssincethattimesince 1988 beenconsciousofhowspecialfreedomis.
Untilfouryearsago, when I hadthatbreathlessfeelingagainof, youknow, steppingoutofthegondolaand I can't breathe.
Andthathappenedonourcampus.
Youweretherefouryearsagoinspring, whentheartdepartmentcreated a teepeewooden, a colorfulwouldn t p directedonWestcampus, and I sawitonFridaywhenitwaserected.
Itwaslovely.
Itwasallwooden.
Ithadcolorfulpanels, wasbeautiful.
And I rememberthinking, Oh, I'm gonnabringHenryandCharlieherenextweekMygrandsonBySunday, thecollegepipelineemailwas a TwitterbeforeTwitter, I supposeaboutthisteepee.
AndthenitwaseitherSundaynightorMonday.
ThencollegepresidentLaurieGaskinissued a profuseapologyabouttheteepeeandwhat's goingonhere.
And I camebacktoschoolandtheteepeewasgone, andweallknowwhatthatwasabout.
Itwasdesignedtostayupforthreeweeksduringmidtermsas a placeofrespite, wherestudentswhowereexperiencingthestressofmidtermexamsgoandrelax.
Itwas a gifttothestudents.
Itwasdismantled.
Therewereapologiesgiven, andthen I waited.
I waitedforsomeonetocomeoutandsay, Wait a minute, FirstAmendment.
Thisis a violationofftheFirstAmendmenton a publiccollegecampusintheUnitedStates, andnobodysaidanything.
I alwayswait 24 hoursandthen I gotonpipelineand I e mailedout, and I think I wastheonlyperson.
Theremayhavebeen a fewothers, but I'm prettysure I wastheonlypersonwhospokeupforthosestudentsthere.
Professor, anhourrighttobecreative, tocreateartandnothaveitdismantled.
Andthathasstayedwithme.
I'm stillangryaboutit, andithasstayedwithmeeversince, and I don't believe I willeverstopbeingawareofhowpreciousourfreedomis.

Didyouget a senseatthattimethatithasbeen a majorshiftinhighereducationawayfromtheopenfreedomtoexpresscontroversialnotionsandthepowerofjust a singlepersonclaimingtobeoffendedbysomebodyelse's expressionoffreedomwaschangingthewholeclimate.
Thecultureofeducationwaschanging.

What's goingontherewhenyouand I firstjoinedthefacultyatSantaBarbaraCityCollege.
Sheinthedepartmentandmeinthephilosophydepartment.
That's what 23 yearsago, goingon 24 yearsago, whenPeterMacDougalandaspeoplecomeuptomeandaskmeaboutmyexperience, my 23 yearsand I'm sureitmusthappentoyou, I respondtothisparentissuebysaying, I thinktheparentshavetakentheireyeofftheball.
I thinktheyweretoobusywithotherthings.
Theywehad a marvelouscollegewhenitwasundertheauspicesofthedirectionoftheoldboardoftrustees, oldinbothsensesoftheword.
ItwastheOdysseyandtickleMereadingsfromPlatoandonebook, andwewouldjustbuild a fallprogramaroundthatbook.
Fabulous, Fabulous.
I wassoproudofthatprogram.
Theonedisappointment I didhavewasthat I hadalwayswantedthatprogramtobepickedupbyteachersintheMetprograminEnglish, which, asyouknow, theMetprogramreallytargetsupprimaryLatinostudents, marginalizedstudents.
And I thoughtthattheywouldbenefitfromthis.
And I didspeaktothosethosefacultyseveraltimesinmeetingsandtheyalwaysresisted.
Theyjustrefused.
And I thought, Boy, that's just a damnshamethegreatestbenefitthat I learnedfrommystudentsbecause I would I wouldinterviewmystudents.
Howareyoudoingwiththegreatbookscurriculum?
Andtheywouldsay, because I never I neverimposedanytestingwith.
I letthemreadwhattheywantedtoagaininthesyllabus.
I gavethemthereadinglist, andthentheywerefreetoroamaround.
Iftheywantedtosubmit a report, I woulddefendgreat, buttheyweren't obligedto, andwithonecommonthing.
Everystudentthat I askeditwasintheGreatBookscurriculumprogramwithProfessorBarbaraWasittaughtittaughtthemhowtolearnhowtolearnontheirownwithoutme.
Yesandyes, that's whataneducationitmightunderstandingofthingsisthatwegotoschoolnottobe a perpetualslaveto a professor, butrathertobe a freeindividualthathas a robustlifeofideas.
I usedtotellmystudentsonthefirstdayofclass, I wouldsay, I'm notheretogiveyoutheanswers.

I knewthattheywerecapable, and I treatedthemwithrespect.
I alwaysdid.
I loveteachingtheonething I miss.
I'vebeenretiredforyears.
I missbeinginthatclassroom I lovedbystudents.
And, youknow, allthoseyears I neverhad a studentcomplainaboutmenotrespectingtheirfeelings, or I don't blamethestudents.
Therewere 27 amendmentstotheConstitutionandthemedallion, and I actuallydid a podcastwhere I wentthroughall 27 amendmentsandhequestionedmeaboutwhat's thisone?
Andthatdaygoingbackfouryearsagowhenthecollegedismantled a workofart, a gifttoourstudentsandwasproudofthemselvesforyes, forapologizing, thatwas a shamefuldayonthatcampussothatthatshockedyouintoaction.
But I heardthatpeople, otherpeoplewhowerethere, werenothappybecauseofwhat I said, andthat I wastalkingabouttheFirstAmendmentthatdayandvoicesbeingsilencedoncampus.
Atthetime, therewas a conservativegroupthathadformed a conservativegroupforstudents, andtheywantedtoopenupthedialoguenotjustforconservativestudentsbuttoinviteeverybodytothetable.
And I wascriticalthinking, Yes, and I wastheirmanin D.

And I wastheretoremindeveryoneabouttheFirstAmendment.
And a friendtoldmehewasthereaswellsaid, Well, somebodyintheaudienceand a youngwomansaidSheissotriggeringmeSincewhen?
JustbecauseitistheConstitution.

Andthen, ofcourse, I triggerthemmadlyonJanuary 24thwhenOh, goodnessgracious, I recitedthePledgeofAllegiance.
WhenFrankandEricand I wenttoEastBerlin, itwasmydecisionthatheapplyfortheFulbrightteachingGrantbecause I feltthiswasouropportunityasAmericanstobegoodwillambassadorsforourcountry.
I hadgrownupunderthethreatofthenuclearbomb, theColdWar.
I didn't wantthatformyson, forEric, whowasonly 10 yearsold.
Andthen I respondedagainandhedidn't respondbacktome, so I thought, Well, I'm justgonnagototheThursdayboardmeetingand I willexplainwhythePledgeofAllegianceisimportanttomeandtrytoappealtotheotherboardmembers.
And I'm goingtosaythepledge, I'm anAmerican.
I have a righttogoto a publicmeetingandbringmyflagbecause I wasn't sureiftheystillhad a flagthereandsaythePledgeofAllegianceat a publicmeeting.
And I hadalreadydecidediftheyrefusedtobringitback, that I wasgoingtocometoeveryeveryotherThursdaymeetinguntiltherewasnomorebreathandmeleftandrecitethepledgeinpubliccommentbecausethat's myrightandit's important.
Youdon't havetosayitifyoudon't wantto.
Youdon't havetostandup, youcanturnyourback.
Youcouldbeasfoolishasyouwantandmanydo.
Andtheyyes, thevideotapethatwesawthebeginning.
I don't thinkthere's a lotofcrowdcoverage, butinsubsequentmeetingsoftheboard, afteryougotthepledgerestoredus, whichwewanttotalkaboutfor a coupleofsecondshere.
