  • [Background music throughout] >>DARREN COOK: Tonight were actually going

  • to be getting in the water and just running through different skills that the divers will

  • experience in the actual open water, such as mask clearing-- flooding and clearing it

  • afterwards, just basically doing regulator recovery. If they happen to have a problem

  • underwater, their goal is to never have to come to the surface to solve that problem,

  • and be able to solve every problem that arises underwater.

  • >>RYAN BOYLE: Youre underwater the whole time, so it’s really nice. We try to limit

  • ourselves from going to the surface if possible, because we want to be able to enjoy the entire

  • experience of being underwater. My favorite part, though, is the survival skills. I like

  • taking the mask off and taking the regulator out of your mouth and trying to learn how

  • to not freak out underwater if any incident ever occurs, so it’s-- the whole thing is

  • fun. >>TOMMY MUEHLER: It’s a really laid-back

  • class. You actually learn quite a bit, just of-- like what to do underwater. If you like

  • the water I would definitely recommend it. It’s just an awesome feeling, being able

  • to breathe underwater. >>COOK: It’s just sharing something that

  • is just an amazing adventure and seeing people experience it for the first time, and accomplishing

  • those challenges that they have underwater and getting through them.

  • >>BOYLE: Colorado Mesa University is not a big, giant, conglomerate-type school. Theyre

  • smaller, so all the classes I go to are smaller. There’s-- instead of having a class of 300

  • people, you have a class of like 20 people, and you get more one-on-one experience. With

  • the scuba class, we have like 20 people in our class, and so if we have a problem, we

  • can contact our... we can contact our professor right away. They can address the problems,

  • and it’s a lot easier to learn, and we learn faster.

  • >>COOK: Once they complete all of those skills, they are a certified diver. That is good for

  • a lifetime. If they haven’t been in the water for six months or more, they come back,

  • see us, we get them in the water and do a scuba review, which usually takes a couple

  • hours. >>MUEHLER: Just come try it!
