B) Ask them questions so that they can solve the problem themselves? Or C) Turn off the lights and hide under your desk, because you have your own work to do? Even though you told your team members you had an "open-door policy." Did you know that people are more likely to commit to and remember solutions they help create? So, while it might be faster and certainly easier for you to just give them the answers, Asking questions is what's going to help them find the solutions themselves. But what questions? Here's a model you can use to help your team members GROW. Try the GROW model of questioning. G stands for Goals. Questions like, "What does success look like?" "What do you want to accomplish?" R stands for Reality, or current reality. What do we know to be true? What barriers do we have in our way? O stands for Options. So what possibilities do we have that we could consider? And finally, W is Will do. What will you do next to take action? Using this model to help your team members problem-solve not only helps them develop their confidence and their competence. It also helps you increase your capacity. And who doesn't want more capacity? Here is your challenge: The next time somebody brings you a problem they need help solving, instead of just giving them the answer, I want you to ask them questions using the GROW model. What are their Goals, Reality, Options, and what Will they do? Share your experiences in the comments below, so we can learn from you, and you will help us GROW! And remember, play fully brave!
