Like, why did I always want to do this thing but never 為什麼我一直想這麼做, did it and never even put any effort into it? And so, a piece of advice for anybody trying something 所以,在此奉勸大家, that's very hard for them or for something 如果你想要嘗試一件 that seems like sort of an impossible goal, 困難到幾乎不可能的事情, is to just steadily broaden your comfort zone over time. Basically, consistently do things that are slightly harder 基本上就是朝著你想要的方向,持續地去做 for you in the right direction, 更困難一點點的事情, not necessarily specifically towards that goal, 也許不見得是特別針對你的目標, but sort of keep broadening yourself until eventually 但就是擴展自己的能力, it seems possible. I think actually climbing affords a lot of opportunities 我覺得攀岩提供了很多自我省思的機會, for self-reflection and measuring self growth because 以及自我成長的評估。 the rock never changes, and so each season 因為岩石就在那不變,每到攀登的季節, you can come back and climb the same routes 你又可以回來爬同樣的路徑, and you see your own personal growth. I mean, climbing on El Cap is a perfect example, because I climbed it for the first time, I think, 當我第一次攀爬, in 2006 and it took us 22 hours, I think, 應該是在 2006,我們花了 22 個小時。 And then this last summer I climbed that same route 而今年夏天我爬同樣的路徑, in less than two hours. So it's nice to see that level of growth over a decade. The thing about free soloing, which is climbing without 不用繩索攀爬,也就是徒手獨攀, a rope, is that there's such a psychological component 除了生理上的挑戰, to it. It's not just the physical difficulty, It's also, Does it feel slippery? Does it seem scary? Like, is there an insecure move? So, I'd like to differentiate risk and consequence. I mean, the consequences are definitely death. If you fall off the wall, you're definitely gonna die. But the risk is sort of the likelihood 但風險其實有點像是 of actually falling off, and the idea is that 你真正會掉下去的可能性。 with enough preparation, with enough training, 重點是,當你有充份的準備和訓練, you can mitigate the risk. I mean, I think that the idea was that with two years 我想,有了兩年的準備 of preparation, the risk for me was approaching zero, 對我來說,風險趨近於零。 even though the consequences were still super high, 即使後果還是超級嚴重, at least the risk was very low. So, to free solo El Cap, I put maybe two years 為了徒手獨攀酋長岩, of direct effort into it, but then beyond that, 我大概花了兩年在它身上。 I put another 10 years of sort 我花了大約十年做間接的練習, of indirect effort, free soloing routes 徒手獨攀其他類似 that are very similar, but not exactly the same. And then, once it seemed like El Cap was maybe possible, 當攀爬酋長岩變得可行, then I put two years of effort into it. But then the final six months I knew that it was possible, I knew that I could do it and I wanted to do it. So then I was single-mindedly focused 接著我就心無旁騖地專注在 on free soloing El Cap. And so for those six months, I was training way too much, 那六個月我訓練得非常精實, like working out a lot, eating really well, really focused. And then there's the whole preparation on the route itself, 還有就是對路徑本身的準備, because there's physically and mentally preparing for it, 因為在生理和心理層面都要做準備, but then there's also practicing the route itself, 還有練習路徑, which means just spending a lot of time on the wall. And so for me, one of the challenges was sort of to hit 所以對我來說一個很具挑戰性的地方是 them both in the sweet spot, you know to do the solo 要在這兩方面都有效地進行, while I still felt strong, but also felt prepared enough. I guess one of the takeaways from free soloing El Cap 我想,我徒手獨攀酋長岩的心得就是, is that if you want to do something very difficult, 如果要做一件困難的事, you just have to put in the time and the effort, 就得要投入時間和心力, you just have to put in the work. I think for me, it was easier because I love climbing 對我來說沒那麼困難,是因為我非常喜歡攀岩, so much and I love the process so much 非常熱愛整個過程, and the goal was so inspiring. Basically, it hit all the sweet spots. Where El Cap is so impressive to me and so inspiring, 酋長岩對我來說意義非凡,是種激勵, and I love the actual day-to-day effort involved, 我又熱愛每天所付出的努力, So it was easy for me to put in that level 所以要做到這種程度對我來說並不困難, of effort because I was inspired for it. So I mean, maybe the takeaway is that if you want 也許我的心得要改成: to do really difficult things, make sure they're things 如果要做一件困難的事, that you actually want to do. You know, like be inspired by the work that you're doing 你是否因為這件事而感到鼓舞, and then put in the time.
