It's a little windy today but I'm gonna shoot a video for you guys anyways.

As some of you know, I've told you that I am a high school teacher, but did you know

that I'm also a farmer.

In this video I'll help you learn some English words and phrases to talk about farming while

I give you a little tour of my farm.

It's really windy out here today, but I'm gonna make this video anyways.

A tractor is a vehicle that farmers use to work

in their fields.

And I actually have two of them if we take a look over here you can see my snowblower

on the back and I have another smaller tractor and it has a rototiller.

Here is another farm implement.

This is a wagon.

A wagon is hooked up to back of a tractor.

Let's head out to some of the fields.

It's April right now in Canada so not a lot is growing yet.

You can see that it's fairly brown out here.

This is a flower bed.

This is where my wife and I grow flowers.

I'm not sure what that sound is.

This is a flower bed.

This is a place where we'll grow market flowers.

We grow cut flowers for a local farmers' market.

And in this bed I think we're actually growing some tulips right now.

Let's go have a look at what they look like in April.

So one of the things that's really neat about living on a farm is it's, I think

that might blow away at some point today, one of the cool things about living on a farm

is watching things grow.

I really enjoy watching things grow.

If you look really closely here, you'll see that there are some small tulips just

starting to come out of the ground.

I hope that you can see them.

I'll put a picture of what those will look like in a couple of months.

But let's go look at one of the bigger fields.

That's a feed truck.

That's a truck that brings feed to farms.

This field behind is a field of wheat.

On our farm we grow basically four big crops.

We grow wheat.

We grow soybeans.

We grow corn, and we grow hay.

Let's walk over to the wheat field and have a look at some of the baby wheat plants.

They're really hard to see right now.

So I'm not sure if this is coming into focus, but what you should be seeing right now are

really tiny wheat plants.

I'll put a picture in this video of what wheat looks like when it's bigger.

But this is one of the crops that we grow on our farm.

Eventually the wheat is harvested and used to make bread.

We don't make the bread though.

We ship the wheat to a local grain elevator, and they sell it to places that make bread.

So what you can see behind me here are three different farm structures or buildings.

You can see my barn.

A barn is a place where you keep animals.

You can see my silos.

Silos are a place where you keep feed for animals.

And you can see my machine shed, or drive shed, where I keep my farm equipment, my tractors

and my implements.

I know it's not a lot to look at yet, but in the beds behind me we have flower that

is called a peony.

And I'll try to put a picture up here of what a peony looks like.

And if you're wondering why I'm making this video at this time of year, I plan to

make another one in about six or seven weeks and I'll show you all of the same places

on my farm and what they look like then.

So on a farm you need water.

We have two sources of water on our farm.

We have a pond that you see behind me, and if I just turn the camera a bit you can see

the river down here.

On our farm we have two kinds of animals.

We have goats, which you see right here, and we have sheep.

In the winter we keep our sheep inside because there's nothing for them to eat in the pasture.

A pasture is a field where we grow grasses for animals to go eat in.

Well one thing that happens when have animals is you get manure.

This is a pile of manure that we will use to mix with the soil as fertilizer.

If you're not sure what manure is, when animals eat, eventually something has to come

out the other end.

Manure.

On our farm we also have cats.

We call them farm cats.

They live in the barn and they help to catch mice and rats.

Hi kitty.

And usually they're pretty friendly.

I think this one's name is Spike, but I would have to ask my kids to be sure.

This field beside the river is called a pasture, and the pasture is where our sheep and goats

go in the summer to eat grass.

The posts here are a fence and we use the fence to make sure that the goats and sheep

aren't able to escape.

So this is a pasture.

It'll be a lot greener in about four weeks when things warm up a bit.

Pasture.

Well that was a short tour of my farm.

I hope that you learned some English words and phrases so that in the future you'll

be able to talk about farming.

I know it's kind of a rare subject.

It's not something that you'll be talking about a lot, but I hope that you enjoyed this
