They sent off three teams. Each of us hit, like, three different cities, 分別到三個不同的城市做試映 and the reactions from each city is amazing. -You got the really heavy Asian-populated cities, -沒錯 -那些亞洲人口多的城市 you know, like, say, Boston, New York. We expected a good turnout from them. But then when we went to, like, Dallas, 但出乎我們意料的是像達拉斯這類城市 and people still loved it, 的觀眾也非常喜歡這部電影 and I barely saw any Asian people in the audience. It was white people, black people. 大部分都是白人和黑人 -It's just such a universally fun movie to watch, -Right. -證明了這部電影其實是一部適合所有族群的喜劇 -沒錯 that I'm just so grateful to see everybody enjoying it. It's really doing well. It has, like, 這部電影真的表現很棒,它也 what, 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. -Everyone is enjoying -對啊 -大家都很喜歡 the cultural significance of the film. It's funny, because Ronny Chieng, who's on the show, 這真的很有趣,因為我們節目的錢伊信 is also in the movie, and when he came to me 也有出現在那部電影裡,他那時候來找我 to tell me that, like, they wanted him in the movie, 跟我說電影公司找他去演的時候 he, like, really undersold it. He's like, "Hey, man, 還只是輕描淡寫地說:「嘿, "so I might need to leave the show for a few months 我可能要跟節目組請幾個月的假 "to go do this movie; I think it might be 去拍一部電影,好像算是一部 a little bit big for, like, you know, the Asian community," 在華人圈中份量蠻重的一部電影吧。」 and he thought it like it was gonna be, like, 他本來以為可能只是一部 a little indie movie in the middle of nowhere. And then I saw this come out, I was like, 但我看到這部電影上映的時候,我就很驚訝地跟他說: "Ronny, this is major! This is huge!" And it really is, because for 25 years, 而《瘋狂亞洲富豪》確實是,因為已經有 25 年了吧 we have not seen a Hollywood movie with a full Asian cast. -Since Joy Luck Club. And I think going in, I mean, 我認為參與這部電影, Ronny probably wasn't underselling it, 伊信可能並沒有真的小看這部電影 like, 'cause we didn't know; we intellectualized it. 因為我們沒有那種體會,我們一直都有在探討亞洲文化 -Like, we understood it's important. -Right. It's, uh, you know, statistically, 25 years, -這是有數據證明的,25 年來 first studio movie. But we didn't feel how special it was 但我們並不知道《瘋狂亞洲富豪》有這麼特別, until we got to Singapore. When you got, like, the most beautiful, talented, 那裡有來自全球最高顏值、最有才華 -funniest Asian people from all over the world. -Yeah. 和最有趣的亞洲人 -沒錯 You got Asian Americans, Asian British, 像是有美國亞裔、英國亞裔 Asian Australians, from everywhere. You know, Ronny: Asian Malaysian. -Right? Like... -(laughter) -Which sounds amazing, by the way. -Asian Malaysian. -I'm gonna start calling him -馬來西亞亞裔 -我以後在辦公室要這樣叫他 in the office, and I'm gonna get a lawsuit. 然後我就會拿到一張法院傳票 -(laughter) -The, uh... the movie is also great. That's what I enjoy, is, you know, like, 我很喜歡其中那些,你知道 oftentimes when people talk about diversity, 人們常常把融入多元性這件事 people always make it seem like it's charity, 當作是在做公益一樣 -Right. -but it's a great story. And you play a character who, like, 你自己本身也演了一個 seems like the most fun ever. Is it true that you also tried to go for the lead, 聽說你其實也有想演主角, like, the really good-looking, handsome lead? Ha! Thanks for putting it that way. -(笑聲) -對啊 when I first got the script, not every day you get a script 我第一次拿到劇本的時候,要知道你可不是每天都能拿到 that's Crazy Rich Asians with a full Asian cast, 《瘋狂亞洲富豪》這種全部都是亞裔角色的劇本 so I talked to my manager, I picked up the phone, 所以我就打電話跟我經紀人說: right away I'm like, "Guys, I know I'm usually the funny guy, 「嘿,我知道我平常是個搞笑的人, "you know, like, the character actor, 跟裡面這個角色非常接近, "but let me-- this is an important movie-- 但這部電影這麼重要,可不可以 let me try out for the leading role." Okay? And then my manager was like, "Look, Jimmy, I don't know 然後我的經紀人就回答我說:「吉米,我不知道 "how to tell you this properly, but, um... 怎麼更婉轉地跟你說,但是 "they're looking for a good-looking guy 電影公司在找的是一個高顏值 for this role." And, uh, you know, here I am. 所以,最後就是這樣啦 (laughter) (笑聲) -Here I am, so, uh... it's okay. -Yeah, but you, -對,就是這樣,沒有關係 -對,但是 -but you-you crush it in the movie, -Oh, thanks. -但你在電影中表現得很出色, -謝謝 -'cause you play, like, a Versace-wearing, -因為你演得就像是一個穿得很浮誇 mad, party animal. It's awesome to play that guy 'cause you get 演這個角色真的很棒,因為你需要把 to go as big as possible, 戲劇張力表現到最大, to just fill the screen with any energy 讓你的活力充斥在整個畫面中, you have kind of pent up inside. 要把內心的野獸都釋放出來 'Cause I think, normally, as functional members of society, 一般來說,作為社會上正常的一份子 you can't just act crazy, but with a character like that, 你不能隨便就開始發瘋,但這個角色 with billions of dollars and he doesn't care about anything, 是個億萬富翁,他根本不在乎世界上其他事情 he-he lives his life like as if it's lawless. So it was just so fun and freeing to play somebody like that. You also have a cast that is all Asian 這部電影除了都是亞裔演員外, but at the same time really diverse. And don't get me wrong, I mean, I'm not saying it covers 不要誤會我的意思了,我不是在說這些演員 every single aspect of Asian culture, 已經涵括了亞洲文化的所有面貌, but it is interesting that you said, so many people come from 我是覺得你說有這麼多演員 so many different walks of life-- 來自各行各業, When you're on-on set, did you feel that? Because I remember when Black Panther was happening, 因為我記得黑豹上映的時候, people were talking about how the set felt different, 大家都在討論片場的感覺有多麼特別, -it was a new experience. -Absolutely. Was it similar on Crazy Rich Asians? There was some kind of magic. When we were all just hanging out, you know, eating dinner, I didn't have to explain, 我都不用特別說: "Oh, let's go to a Chinese restaurant. 「去吃中式餐廳吧! "It's like authentic, but, like, not that exotic. You can handle it." You know? 放心,你吃得下去的!」 We were all just so much on the same page. 我們這群演員有太多共鳴了 We all just loved the same kind of food. 我們都喜歡一樣的食物 We all sang karaoke every night. 我們每天晚上都唱 KTV (laughter) (笑聲) It was great. 超棒的 You haven't lived until you've seen Ronny Chieng 你都沒聽到錢伊信唱 sing Backstreet Boys, it's amazing. 新好男孩的歌,超酷的 Man, you are just giving me ammunition 天啊,你真的一直在跟我聊 on Ronny Chieng nonstop. 一堆錢伊信的事 Let's talk a little bit about the book as well, 我們也來談一下這本新書吧 because, um, 因為 I love how your book talks about your journey in America. 我非常喜歡你在書中寫關於自己在美國的經驗 How to American: 《如何做個老美: An Immigrant's Guide to Disappointing Your Parents. 讓一個移民教你如何讓你父母大失所望》 Um, it really is a universal story 這個故事適合所有讀者, that is all about yourself becoming an American citizen 裡面談到你怎麼讓自己變成一個真正的美國公民 and the journey that you went on. 和你經歷了哪些事情 Why do you think it's really been as difficult 你為什麼覺得即使是你 as it has been for you to understand 要去真正懂那些 the difference, or the difficulty and duality: 差異或困境也是個大難題? being an American, but then also being Asian 要如何在做一個美國人和同時作為一個亞洲人的矛盾下 and staying true to your roots? 依然忠於自己的本色? I moved here when I was 13 from Hong Kong. 我 13 歲就從香港搬來這裡了 13 is probably a tough age for anyone finding themselves, 13 歲其實是一個很迷茫的階段 but I was in a new country with a new language. 但我當時卻身在一個新的國度,學習新的語言 I couldn't really speak English very well. 我那時候不太會說英文 And also, one of the hardest things 另外一個很難的事情是 aside from just making friends in school, 在學校除了要交朋友外, was dealing with the pressure from your parents, 還要克服家長施加的課業壓力 the expectations of growing up Asian. 那種期待你像個亞洲人一樣長大的壓力 And they value, um, obedience. 他們認為聽從家長很重要, They-they value finding a real job, right? 也認為找到一個正當的「工作」很重要,對吧? (laughs) I like how you say... (笑聲) 你講得很好笑 -Which I'm obviously not doing right now. -Right. -很明顯不是我現在在做的這種 -沒錯 But in American culture, it's the complete opposite. 但是在美國文化中是完全相反的 We value independence, 我們認為獨立很重要 and-and we value pursuing your dreams, 也認為勇於追求夢想很重要 whereas my dad, ever since I was little, 但我爸卻從我小時候 has told me that pursuing your dreams 就告訴我追求夢想 how you become homeless. 最後會讓你流落街頭 So how do you-- Which one do I pick? 所以要怎麼......我應該怎麼抉擇? And how do I go about doing this? 我的選擇又會有什麼後果? When I started doing standup, 在我剛開始做獨角喜劇的時候 like, my-my dad thought I was crazy. 我爸覺得我瘋了 -He doesn't, doesn't know what standup was. -Right. -他不知道獨角喜劇是什麼 -對 Like, we never watched standup in Hong Kong, you know. 我們在香港從來不看獨角喜劇的 My first standup, like, that I watched 我第一次看脫口秀 -was BET Comic View when I came here. -Right. -是來這裡看 BET Comic View 的時候 -沒錯 And that was like a cultural experience. 那真的是一種文化體驗 Yeah, I can only imagine. 嗯,我能想像 It wasn't just jokes, it was, like, about culture. 我看的不只是一些笑話,而是一種文化 Like, when they're talking about white people do this, 當他們在講說白人怎麼樣 black people do that, I didn't know any of those stereotypes. 黑人怎麼樣的時候,我根本不知道有這些刻板印象存在 -Right. -But that was, like, broad strokes of America -對 -我對美國的印象其實都是 that I learned from TV and watching these comedians, 來自電視和那些喜劇, -which is, in a way, culture-tellers, right? -Yes. -這也是一種文化的薰陶,對吧? -對 That's why I became really interested in doing standup, 這也開啟了我對獨角喜劇的興趣 and my dad still, till today, calls it a talk show. 但我爸到現在都還說那是脫口秀 Which, I guess, I'm doing now, so it's fine. 不過我們現在就是在做脫口秀,所以沒關係 I-I'm actually doing a talk show. 我的確是在做脫口秀 You have a great book with a great story. 你這本書很棒,故事很精彩 -Congratulations on the film. -Thank you, my man. -也恭喜你的電影這麼成功 -謝啦兄弟 How to American is available now. 《如何做個老美》已經上市了 Crazy Rich Asians is in theaters nationwide. 《瘋狂亞洲富豪》也已經在全國影廳上映 Jimmy O.
