So, in Japan there are names called "Kirakira" names. 在日本,有所謂的「Kirakira」的名字。 Sparkly names. 閃閃發亮的名字。 Yeah, kirakira means sparkly, or shiny, and those names 對,kirakira 就是閃閃發亮,或是閃爍,而那些名字 are very, very unique and- -"Unique" 非常非常特別... -「特別」。 Yeah, no one actually uses these names to name their own child 對,沒有人真的用這些名字為自己的小孩命名 and often time it's very hard to read or many of them are impossible to read. 而且它通常非常難唸或者有很多是根本無法唸的。 What do you mean, no one actually uses them? Some people do use them, right? 什麼意思,沒有人真的會用?還是有些人用了,對吧? I mean, some, a few, maybe one or two people. 我是說,有一些、幾個、或許一兩個人。 Jun is too polite so say it, but these are bad Japanese baby names. Jun 講得太客氣了,但這些是很糟糕的日本嬰兒名字。 Yeah, I admit it, they're really bad so... 對,我承認,它們真的很糟... Have you ever, you know those lists we have in America of the worst baby names 你曾經,你知道在美國我們有最爛嬰兒名的名單 and you're like, "How, how did someone name their child this?" 看了你就會像這樣,「怎麼會有人給小孩取這種名字?」 Well, that is not unique to Western culture. 那並非西方文化特有。 They do that here in Japan as well. 日本也這麼做。 So today, we're going to give you some examples of those really bad Japanese names a.k.a. Kirakira names. 所以今天,我們要告訴你們幾個糟透了的日本名字,也就是 kirakira 名字。 So the thing about Japanese names is that they have a kanji and then, of course, a reading. 關於日文名字,它們有漢字,還有,理所當然的,讀音。 Many kanji have several readings but the thing about kirakira names is 許多漢字有多種讀音,但 kirakira 名字 the readings that they're given aren't 被賦予的念法並不是 necessarily real readings of that kanji, so Japanese 那個漢字的真實讀音,所以日本人 people have no idea how to pronounce these names, 毫無頭緒如何發音這些名字 and in fact it's impossible for Japanese people to guess how these names are pronounced base on the kanji. 而且事實上日本人不可能根據漢字就猜出這些名字的念法。 So, for example: 舉例來說: So, the top kanji means "Light" and the second kanji means "Universe" or "Space" 第一個漢字代表「光」,而第二個漢字代表「宇宙」或「太空」 and this person's name is: 而這個人的名字是: "Pikachu" 「Pikachu」。 R: Wait, wait, really? -Yeah, it's Pikachu. R:等等,真的嗎? - 對,是 Pikachu。 R: That's how you pronounce it? -Yeah. R:就是這樣唸? - 沒錯。 Nooo, that poor kid! -I know right? 不不不,那可憐的孩子! - 我知道,是吧? I'm so sorry, Pikachu. No! Oh my god, can you imagine that kid in school? 我很遺憾,Pikachu。不!我的天啊,你可以想像那個孩子在學校嗎? "Pikachu-kun!" 「Pikachu 君!」 That's so bad. 太慘了。 I mean, like, imagine when you are like 20, or 30, or 40, and then you're boss' name is Pikachu. 我是說,想像當你 20、30、或 40 歲時,那時你的老闆叫作 Pikachu。 This one is not really, like, kirakira name. Um, the reading is literally "Tai Ma". 這一個並不真的是 kirakira 名字。嗯,讀音就是字面上的「Tai Ma」。 That's how we read this kanji 這就是這個漢字的念法 but this kanji with this word literally means "Marijuana". 但漢字的這個詞意思是「大麻」。 R: Wait, really? -Yeah. R:等一下,真的嗎?- 對。 It's a name for a boy. 這是個男孩名。 R: Oh, no! -I don't know what the parents were thinking! R:噢,不! - 不知道父母在想什麼! "Hey little Marijuana! Come eat your vegetables!" 「嘿小大麻!來吃你的蔬菜囉!」 You seem pretty high today! 你今天看起來很嗨! Up next on the baby name list! 接著下一個嬰兒名字! When I saw these two names, I literally had no idea how to read them. 我看到這兩個名字時,根本不知道怎麼唸。 So apparently, this one is "Jibanyan" from the popular anime for kids, and this one, 顯然,這一個是有名的兒童動畫的「Jibanyan」,而這個 R: Yo-Kai Watch -Yeah, Yo-Kai Watch, right. And this one is R:妖怪手錶。 - 對,妖怪手錶,沒錯。而這一個是 "Mewtwo", from Pokemon again. 「Mewtwo」,又是來自寶可夢。 Nooo! Why are parents doing this to their kids?! 不不不! 為什麼父母要對孩子這麼做?! How can you do that?! 你們怎麼這樣?! I mean, I couldn't believe that these names actually exist. 我無法相信這些名字真的存在。 Wait, this is pronounced "Mewtwo"? 等等,這個念作「Mewtwo」? Apparently so, yeah. 顯然是這樣,沒錯。 You can't even write "two". 怎麼能甚至寫了「二」。 I don't-No. -Like, with katakana maybe, but.. 我不知道。 - 如果是片假名,也許可以,但... I think cause this means "number 2" -Ah, number 2. 我想是因為這是「數字 2」。 - 啊,數字 2。 In English. -Yeah. 英文。 - 對。 So maybe that's how they make it read. I don't know. 或許這就是他們決定這樣唸的原因。我不知道。 They said these exist so I think they actually do exist. -This is no longer funny to me. 他們說有這些名字所以我想他們真的存在。 - 我已經不覺得好笑了。 All right, Jun, what's next? 好了,Jun,下一個呢? "Hamtaro" -Ok, I'm done. I'm done. I'm done. 「Hamtaro」。 - 好,我受夠了,我受夠了,我受夠了。 So, it's a name from the... was it anime, I guess? 這個名字來自...動畫嗎,我猜? The animation. The hamster animation for kids. Hamtaro. 卡通。兒童的倉鼠動畫,Hamtaro。 But when I was in school I had a friend whose name was "Kotaro". Kotaro-kun. 但當我還在學時,我有一個朋友叫作「Kotaro」。Kotaro 君。 It's a boy. And this part looks really similar to katakana "Ham", 是男生。而這一部分看起來真的很像片假名的「Ham」 so I just started calling him Hamtaro and he kind of went "Funny, funny". 所以我開始叫他 Hamtaro 而且他也覺得蠻好笑的。 So, his nickname was Hamtaro. 所以,他的綽號是 Hamtaro。 Yeah but, ok, that's a cute nickname for a friend, 對,但是,好吧,對一個朋友來說這是個可愛的綽號 like from one friend to another friend, 像是朋友之間互相稱呼 but then you don't name your child Hamtaro! 但別把你自己的小孩取名叫 Hamtaro! Yeah, that's insane. 對,真是瘋了。 And next! 下一個! This kanji, this word, literally means "Main Character". 這個漢字,這個詞,字面意思是「主人公」。 Um, "Shujinko", but his name is "Hero". 嗯,「Shujinko」,但他的名字是「Hero」。 What? -Yeah, Hero. 什麼? - 對,Hero。 R: Nooo. Can you read this kanji like that? Hero. -Impossible R:不。這個漢字可以那樣唸嗎?Hero - 不可能。 There is a word for hero, which is "Eiyuu", but they don't even use that kanji to make it read like hero. Hero 有一個字,是「Eiyuu」,但他們甚至不用那個漢字讓它唸作 hero。 They just named their son Main Character like the hero. 他們把他們的兒子主人公唸得像英雄。 But you can't read it like that even. -Isn't he going to grow up to be super Chuunibyou or something? 但你甚至無法那樣唸它。 - 他長大以後不會變得超級中二之類的嗎? I mean, I think the kid's going to be really realistic and hate their parents so bad and become probably really smart and, like... 我想這孩子將會變得非常現實而且痛恨他的父母,並且可能變得超級聰明,還有... Can you change your name in Japan? 在日本可以改名嗎? Um, so, in the Meiji period, like a long time ago, they made two rules which are: 嗯,在明治時代,很久以前,他們制定了兩條規則: You can have only one name, and you cannot change your name. 你只能有一個名字,而且不能改名 But later they edited the rule, and if you bring it to a Family Court then you can change your name. 但後來規定改了,只要你上家庭法庭就可以改名。 Ok. -Somehow 好 - 但是 But, if you are under 15 years old then you have to bring it 但是,如果你未滿 15 歲,那麼你必須 to a Family Court with a legal representative, which normally are your parents 與一位法定代理人一起去家庭法庭,那通常就是你父母 and if your parents are lacking in common sense like these [with names], they probably wouldn't let you 而如果你的父母缺乏這些 (名字的) 常識,他們八成不會讓你 change your name, so you have to wait until you are turning 15 years old. 改名,所以你必須等到 15 歲。 So Pikachu-san doesn't have to be Pikachu-san forever. -Yeah 所以 Pikachu 不必永遠都是 Pikachu。 - 對 By the way, what's your favourite name that maybe you want to use for your kid if you have one in the future? 對了,如果你將來有小孩,你最想要給他取什麼名字? I really like old Japanese masculine names. -Uh-huh 我很喜歡以前的日本男生名字。 - 嗯哼。 I don't know why but they sound like really, really cool. 不知道為什麼但它們聽起來真的很酷。 Uh-huh. -My favourite Japanese boy name is "Isamu" 嗯哼。 - 我最喜歡的日本男生名字是「Isamu」。 Ahh, right-right-right, it was Isamu, wasn't it? 啊,對對對,是 Isamu,沒錯吧? Yeah, like the name was Isamu and the kanji means "courage", which is really cool. 對,名字是 Isamu,而漢字表示「勇氣」,真的很酷。 Or "brave" -Or 'brave", yeah. Yeah, Isamu. 或是「勇敢」。 - 或是「勇敢」,對。對,Isamu。 Yeah, and it's like, it's a normal Japanese name. It's not kirakira. 對,而且這是一個正常的日本名字,不是 kirakira。 Yeah, not at all. It's very traditional. 對,完全不是。它非常傳統。 Yeah, it's very old. Does it sound old to Japanese people? Like does it sound bad? 對,它很舊。日本人會覺得它聽起來很老氣嗎?它聽起來不好嗎? No. No, I don't think it sounds bad, at all. -Ok, really? Mm-hm. 不。不,我完全不覺得它聽起來不好 - 好,真的嗎?嗯哼。 Are there like old Japanese names that sound bad? 有舊的日文名字是聽起來不好的嗎? Because a lot of really old names in America are like that, 因為在美國很多很古老的名字就是那樣 so if you have kid, for example, you probably aren't going to name your child, like, Barbara anymore. 所以假如你有小孩,舉例來說,你大概不會再叫你的小孩,像是,Barbara 了。 I mean, like, we can also tell that if your name sounds kinda old 我們也可以聽出你的名字是不是有點老 because that's what they used to use back then, -Uh-huh 因為那是過去人們常用的 - 嗯哼。 but like, they don't necessarily have to have a bad meaning or connotation, so... -Uh-huh 但是它們不必然得有個不好的意思或內涵,所以... - 嗯哼。 So it doesn't sound bad. -It sounds old. 所以它聽起來不糟。 - 它聽起來很老。 Yeah. -They sound old, but personally I don't think it's a problem. Yeah. -Yeah 對。 - 它們聽起來老氣,但我個人不認為這是個問題,對。 - 對。 Ok, so I'm also going to go over some Western names to make this fair 好了,為了公平起見,我也要分享一些西方名字 so you guys can see what kind of names we also have. -I am very excited and I'm very sad at the same time. 你們大家可以看看我們有什麼名字。 - 我既興奮又很悲傷。 I was able to find a list. 我找到一個名單。 Like an actual list of the new baby names in 2015 in England and Wales. 是 2015 年在英格蘭和威爾斯新生兒名字的真實名單。 So this isn't America but this one I was actually able to find a list -England? Ok. 所以這不是美國的但我找到了一個名單 - 英格蘭?好。 where they wrote down I think every single new name 他們寫下了每一個新名字 as long as at least 3 babies were named in that year, so... 只要當年至少有 3 個嬰兒使用,所以... In 2015, in England and Wales, there are... 2015 年,在英格蘭和威爾斯,有... There are three boys named: 有三個男孩叫作: "C". 「C」。 C? -The letter C. C? - 字母 C。 Four boys named the letter "T" 四個男孩叫作字母「T」。 Four boys named the letter "J" 四個男孩叫作字母「J」。 And there were eleven boys named the letter "A" 還有十一個男孩叫作字母「A」。 This is, you can't name a child a single letter. Do you understand how hard it is going to be for them to fill up online forms? 你不能用一個字母給小孩命名。你知道將來他們填寫線上表格有多難嗎? That's going to be so confusing. For that child's future. -Ahh. 那會很令人困擾。為了那孩子的未來。 - 啊。 2015 in England and Wales there were nine boys named "Nimrod", 2015 年在英格蘭和威爾斯有九個男孩叫作「Nimrod」 a which is a biblical character, 是個聖經裡的角色 and that's cool and all, if it weren't for the fact that 那很酷,要不是因為其實 Nimrod became slang for "Idiot" in North America. Nimrod 在北美變成了「白癡」的俚語。 そう なの? (Is that so?) -Yeah. そう なの?(是這樣嗎?) - 對。 But that's like common sense, people know that? 但那是常識嗎?大家都知道? In North America, yeah. This is... It's kind of an older slang. -Uh-huh. 在北美,沒錯。這是蠻古老的俚語。 - 嗯哼。 I don't think many people these days still use nimrod to make fun of someone 我不覺得現在還有很多人會用 nimrod 去取笑別人 but if you hear the word "nimrod" you think "slang for idiot." 但當你聽到「nimrod」這個字就會想到「白癡的俚語」。 That's what they think. 他們就是這麼想的。 That's what you call, yeah, and I feel like if you want to reclaim 就是這樣,而且我覺得如果你想要洗白 the biblical name Nimrod, that's cool, but maybe rename 聖經名字 Nimrod,那很酷,但或許你自己 yourself Nimrod. Don't subject your child to like twelve years of schooling being named Nimrod. 改名成 Nimrod 比較快。別讓你的孩子承受十二年在學校被叫作 Nimrod。 That poor child! 那可憐的孩子! At least this is in England, right? -Oh my gosh! 至少這是在英國,對吧? - 我的天啊! Yeah. -Not in America. 對。 - 不是在美國。 Yeah, I mean what if they move to America? -Well, I mean, 對,但如果他們搬到美國呢? - 嗯,我是說 And I don't know, maybe some British people also know the slang of it being stupid. 不知道,也許有些英國人也知道它是笨蛋的俚語。 Is this common slang in the UK? -In the UK? 這在英國是常見的俚語嗎? - 在英國? Do you guys recognize this as slang for idiot, or is this just North America? 你們大家認為這是白癡的俚語嗎,還是這只在美國? This is jumping now to just random lists of names I found, 接下來跳到我隨機找到的一些名字 so maybe these are in America, I'm not really sure, 也許這些也在美國,我不是很確定 but apparently, a new-ish name they're naming baby girls these days is: 但顯然,最近有一個創新的小女孩名字: Phelony! Phelony! Felony, which is the worst type of crime you can be charged with in America. Felony,是在美國你可以被判處的最重的罪。 With the letter F? Felony? -Yes, with the letter F. 改成字母 F 嗎?Felony? - 對,字母 F I mean, it sounds pretty as a word by itself, 這個字本身聽起來很漂亮 but you have to understand the connotations of, like, the actual words 但你必須了解有相同發音的 that are pronounced the same way. 那個真正的字的意涵。 Like there's not just this but another name that I've been seeing 不只是這個,還有另一個名字我已經在美國榜上 for years and years and years in America on these lists is the name Chlamydia. 看到好多好多好多年了,是 Chlamydia。 which sounds like a pretty girl name 聽起來像個漂亮女孩的名字 but it's the name of a sexually transmitted disease. -Ughh! 但它是一個性傳染疾病的名字。 - 呃! So, so I feel really bad for any Chlamydias. 我對所有的 Chlamydias 感到非常遺憾。 Apparently in America there are now over, or as of a couple years ago, there are over 300 children named: 顯然現在在美國,或至少從好幾年前開始,有超過 300 個小孩叫作: "Abcde". The first 5 letter of the alphabet, pronounced "Ob-siddy", 「Abcde」。前 5 個英文字母,唸作「Ob-siddy」。 which I mean, if you want to create a name that's cool, 如果你想要創造新名字,那很酷 but maybe don't, like, give your child a novelty name 但或許不要給你的小孩一個新奇的名字 and just write down the first five letters of the alphabet. That's weird! 就只是寫下前 5 個英文字母,那很奇怪! That would be like naming your child in Japanese "a-i-u-e-o". -Yeah, that's horrible. 那就像是用日文的「a-i-u-e-o」給小孩取名字。 - 對,太可怕了。 I feel like with names, names are supposed to be unique because 我覺得名字應該要是特別的,因為 that's how you differentiate yourself from everyone else, 那是區別你與他人的方式 so I have no problem with people creating new names. 所以我對人們創造新名字沒有任何意見。 I think that's cool to have like, unique new names. 我覺得有獨特創新的名字很酷。 A lot of people these days they make fun of newer names 現在很多人會取笑比較新穎的名字 like, Nevaeh. I'm not sure how to pronounce it. 像是,Nevaeh。我不太確定怎麼唸。 Heaven spelled backwards. Like that's a common name these days. Heaven 倒過來拼。這是現在很常見的名字。 I don't have any problems with that because... -I think it's cool. 我對那沒有意見因為... - 我覺得那很酷。 All of our names didn't exist at one point. 所有我們的名字在某個時間點都是不存在的。 They all had to be created at some point, 它們都必須在某個時間被創造出來 so I don't think there's anything wrong with creating new names. 所以我並不覺得創造新名字有什麼不對。 I just think you shouldn't name your child something that they're going to be made fun of for, -Yeah. 我只是覺得不該給小孩取個將來會被嘲笑的名字。 - 對。 or something that's like, a joke. 或是一個玩笑。 Like that's just kind of cruel to your child. 那對你的孩子還蠻殘忍的。 So, apparently this is just a world wide thing. 所以,很顯然這是個全球的事情。 This is not unique to America and England and Australia and Canada. 這並非美國、英國、澳洲和加拿大獨有。 Japan also has it. 日本也有。 Anyway, thank you guys for watching! 總之,感謝收看! Thank you for your request too! 也謝謝你們的回饋! See ya later! 待會見! Bye! -Bye! 掰! - 掰!
